Betsy Berenback-Gold Career Choice Essay Although many people dont view biology (the study of living organisms)

and engineering (a branch of science and technology dealing with design and structure) to be in the same category, new essential information was developed in both fields creating a link between the two. Thus, the biomedical engineering profession was created. In this profession, biomedical engineers use the application of engineering concepts and techniques in the medical and biological sciences in order to evolve different healthcare categories. These categories that will be advanced using engineering ideologies mixed with biological ideals can include implants, medical devices, tissues, genetics, neural sciences, etc. (Ansell, G. S. (2013)) I personally want to be someone who works in this field. Not only is IB Biology HL my favorite course in high school, but I am both innovative and interested in progressing the medical fields through research or other means of advancement. Therefore, the biomedical field seemed to just fit my personality and ideologies towards my perfect career because it had so many aspects that interested me. In order to become a biomedical engineer, I must start with a good foundation. Currently, I am at Robinson Secondary School and I am an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate. I take very rigorous courses that are pointed in the direction of Biology and Engineering. Therefore, I am already building up a strong knowledge of ideologies surrounding my ideal profession. After high school, I need to get a good undergraduate education because this is where I officially start to truly gain knowledge of my specific career, which is biomedical engineering. I must attend a highly ranked college in order to stay in good standing with others who are trying to strive for the same profession. According to the US News and World Report, the top four ideal schools that have highly respectable biomedical engineering programs are Duke (Dukes Pratt School for Engineering), Stanford, John Hopkins University (Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Institute at John Hopkins University), and Georgia Institute of Technology. Although these schools are highly regarded for their program, the school I would most likely attend, because it is instate and very well ranked, is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). This school has a biomedical engineering school within its premises

for graduate classes and has a respectable program for undergrad. To be a Biomedical Engineer, I must obtain at least my Bachelors Degree from a four year college and it should ideally pertain to the profession itself. (Biomedical Engineering) Once I would receive my degree, I would have many duties and responsibilities that have to do with the job. I would pursue opportunities to gain experience in these fields and I would be responsible by following all the moral rules and codes of ethics within this engineering job. First of all, Biomedical Engineers have a variety of roles that are involved in the invention and innovation of different medical devices including software, implants, artificial limbs (prostheses), organs and other technology used towards improving someones life. Also, a biomedical engineer must design, build, research, and test different theories and technology in order to create the most effective equipment to lengthen and improve the quality of peoples lives. (Enderle, John D."Biomedical engineering." ) Secondly, even though biomedical engineering is a narrowed topic, there are still many different specialty areas within this category. Some specialty areas include bioinstrumentation, tissue engineering, biotechnology, biomechanics, biomaterials, systems physiology, and clinical engineering. Therefore, within this career, there are many different options that make this type of engineering versatile and important for the progression of medical studies. (Ansell, G. S. (2013)) In conclusion, I want this to be my career because not only does it fit my strengths and interests, but I want to work on figuring out ways to help advance the medical world. I would also like to dedicate myself to create new innovations in medical devices for people to have a longer quality life. This career is a perfect blend of biological ideologies and engineering concepts within medicine that truly makes a vast impact on the world.
