Book Group will be meeting on February 19th, 6:00 PM. The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee
Don't be daunted by the subject matter here! Mukherjee's book is described as reading like a literary thriller. "The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an allout war against cancer. The Bath Library Book Club will be discussing Desert Queen by Janet Wallach on Thursday, February 14th at 6 pm at the Bath Library.
Desert Queen is the story of Gertrude Bell. (1868-1926) Ms. Bell explored, mapped and excavated the world of the Arabs. Recruited by British intelligence during WWI, she played a crucial role in obtaining the loyalty of the Arab leaders. After the war she played a major role in creating the modern Middle East and was, at that time, considered the most powerful woman in the British Empire.

Incessantly scouring the universe for the weird, the wacky, and the stupid so you dont have to. Greetings, and thanks for joining me for another week. First, little turds grow up to be big turds! Three girls were charged with gang assault after they allegedly attacked a mom as she put her young child on a school bus. The girls two 13-yearolds and a 12-year-old called what they did mobbing or popping on someone, and told police they did it for fun and chose their victim at random. According to police, the three girls attacked the mom as her child was getting on the bus. They repeatedly punched and kicked her and pulled her by her hair. The 34-year-old victim suffered head and internal injuries, and had cuts and bruises all over her body. Police said one of the three suspects was on suspension from school, and the others had not gone to school. Sounds like they should be in jail. Next, from Bonehead Of The Day Award at http://Bonehead.Oddballs.com: A dangerous and historic discovery was made in Central Park when park workers came upon a live cannon ball, loaded in a cannon that is getting refurbished, CBS 2s Lou Young reported exclusively. when as we approached the trailhead for a hike up Starr King and Waumbek, we encountered a beagle standing in the little road. Weve met the dog before and all went well, but on this day, in a flash the beagle attacked Atticus, going for his throat, his eyes, and ears. It happened so quickly, was so shocking and vicious that by the time I reached the two of them Atticus was bloodied and in a bit of shock. Such was the case recently beagle had bitten him. I pulled the peak-bagging thing to the extreme climbing more than 200 four-thousand foot peaks in two years; including 122 in winter; and I bought every book, map, and piece of gear imaginable. And when the time came to pack up my Ford Focus for the last time and leave behind my little newspaper and the little city which felt like home it all felt right. him close and felt the rough areas of his ear where teeth had punctured it. And when I looked into his eyes I realized that my friend had returned and there were no more scars to be seen. He was self-assured, care-free, and happy to be back on a mountain. That mile-long stretch between Starr King and Waumbek is one of my favorite pieces of trails in the Whites. Its a tangle of grizzled old evergreens whipped and worn by the wind standing among the carcasses of many fallen comrades while sprinkled over the forest floor new life pushes up towards the sun in clusters of tiny pines. It is a microcosm of life. We are born, we grow, we get beaten up by the years, and ultimately we fall leaving room for new life. And in that microcosm in each of our lives there are chapters to the story we write as we move forward, our pen being the actions we take, the pages filled with memories. Watching Atticus march matterof-factly through those frozen trees he seemed to float over the path and walk among the landscape as though he were part of it, but unfazed by any of it, as if his life not about what is taken away from him through the rough times, but about what presently awaits us. Eventually we reached the summit of Waumbek, walked a bit past it to the viewpoint of the Presidentials, and took our lunch as weve done more than a dozen times on that same mountain. I sat in the snow and Atticus sat in my lap and we ate quietly, looking out from our little perch in reverential silence. where the attack had taken place but as soon as he was beyond it he was truly beyond it. I knew there would never be an issue at that house again and he was beyond his fear and beyond any scars you or I would tend to harbor if we suffered the same fate. And sure enough on the way down the mountain we walked easily in silence and when we were at the very end of our trek and walking by where the attack took place there was no agitation on his part, no whimper, nor whine, or growl. He had left the past behind where it belonged. We had come to the mountains years ago to climb as many peaks as we could but what I realize now is that the numbers of peaks dont really matter. What has mattered though are the experiences we glean from them and how they change our life. The map to Waumbek tells me its just shy of an eight mile round trip. What it doesnt show is that along the way we reach true places where lessons are taught and learned by each other, we renew the bond of friendship, and we find a way to catalogue the chapters of our lives, and leave the past where it belongs. The map to Waumbek is flat and polished with clean lines. But what it doesnt show are the true places we reach along the way. Average levels of many chemicals were substantially higher in pets than is typical for people, with 2.4 times higher levels of stain- and grease-proof coatings (perfluorochemicals) in dogs, 23 times more fire retardants (PBDEs) in cats, and more than five times the amounts of mercury, compared to average levels in people, reports the group. Their 2008 study looked at plastics and food packaging chemicals, heavy metals, fire retardants and stain-proofing chemicals in pooled samples of blood and urine from 20 dogs and 37 cats tested at a Virginia veterinary clinic. For dogs, blood and urine samples were contaminated with 35 chemicals altogether, including 11 carcinogens, 31 chemicals toxic to the reproductive system, and 24 neurotoxins, adds EWG. This is particularly alarming given that mans best friend is known to have much higher cancer rates than humans. A 2008 Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Center study found that dogs have 35 times more skin cancer, four times more breast tumors, eight times more bone cancer, and two times more leukemia per capita as humans. Walking Home
The short, dark says of winter make our walk home more siginificant. Arriving home from work or other engagement is not accomplished as quickly as during the summer months. The class VI road on which we live is not maintained, and while we can maneuver a truck down to our property line when the ground is bare, snow cover of course negates such ease. So we park by the cemetery for which our road is named, then snap on skis or buckle on snowshoes, and head for home. From the cemetery its a third of a mile to our cabin. Many ladies of the Town of Warren have sewed quilt blocks for the 250th Anniverary of the Town of Warren commerative quilt project. Several recently met at the Patch Library to lay out the blocks and begin sewing them together. Pictured above left to right are, Nancy Chandler, Sheila Foote, Luane Clark and Sarah Lester. If you have a photo which you think could make it as our Picture of the Week or Parting Shot let us know. Email it to ncnewsnh@gmail.com Your picture could become our next Picture Of The Week!
Cholesterol levels may rise when there is already damage because it has a job to do, like repairing scar tissue in existing vessels and muscles that could result in heart disease. Reports that promote statin drugs and preoccupation with cholesterol levels without explaining cholesterols beneficial effects are suspect. Their charts and numbers serve to confuse the issue and keep pharmaceutical companies happy.

nothing harsh about these minutes on foot. If anything it is intensely personal. Thoughts crystallize, concerns fade, and our mental pace moderates. The weather, the sky, the stars, the temperature, the creak of the trees and the lean of their boughs: each of these details comprise the background for our pedestrian commute. As the old road bends to the left then leads downhill ever so slightly, the road becomes a footpath. The forest closes in, and the long arms of elderberry and blackberry bushes narrow the path to a mere few feet. It is at the twisted maple, before the series of seeps and springs, that the light from the cabin is first visible (if, of course, one of us is already at home to greet the other). It beckons: dim, patient, promising. On the nights that my eyes discern this little light, a smile customarily touches the corners of my lips. As forest gives way to field, the path rounds the corner past the garden and reaches the front door. Sometimes the squeak of snow announces my arrival, other times the headlamp on my forehead is a clear giveaway. Sometimes the powdered snow silences my footsteps only to be heard by Mica, who announces my arrival with a welcoming bark.. I swing open the door, make use of the stump that is our doorstep, and enter. I am home at last.

And this time of year, the walk often happens in the dark. Sometimes we walk by headlamp, sometimes by memory, sometimes by moonlight. The walk offers wonderful moments of transition between the demands of the outside world and Home. I say walk you understand that Im the snowshoer of the two of us. Regardless of our mode of movement, Ryan and I both agree. The walk has a certain beauty to it, even in the dark.
