At RS Components we believe in helping our customers innovate. We have set a goal to remove barriers to innovation to electronics design and thus DesignSpark PCB is born.
Launched July 2010 it set a new standard for PCB design tools. For the first time in history engineers worldwide gained access to fully featured, free software with no intentional restrictions or limitations. This made the tool ideally suited for commercial as well as hobbyist use. The idea of a free professional PCB package was quickly picked up by the industry and enthusiasts leading to nearly 40,000 downloads in the first 6 months of release. The user community boomed, making designSpark.com a popular engineering discussion forum.

This feature is perhaps the most awaited by the community since the tool launch in 2010. Guided by the voice of the users, we decided to complement the existing set of components as known from Version 3 (30,000 parts) with brand new libraries created by 3rd party industry experts in compliance with the IPC-7351 standard. To deliver the new libraries we built in a dedicated interface to ModelSource, our online engineering models database. The new libraries are aligned with the RS product offer and launched with over 80,000 components.

i tried a couple of free PCB designer KiCad, EasyCad + FreePCB - before settling on DesignSpark. it is an order or magnitude more powerful than the competition.

i have written comments here before but just wanted to once again show my appreciation of this great piece of software that i feel surpasses other popular, free or semi-free, pcb editors around. i have so far used DesignSpark extensively since version 1 and i am definitely looking forward to version 4.
