February 2013
FROM THE PASTORS DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian Church: As February comes around, so does the beginning of the Lenten Season starting with Ash Wednesday on February 13, 2013. We receive the name Lent from the lengthening of the days as we move toward spring and Easter, the Great-Getting-Up day of Jesus Christ. Also, Lent is a time when we can focus spiritually upon our discipleship for our Lord Jesus Christ. Ash Wednesday worship begins this process as we use ashes symbolic for repentance from sin and a turning to a greater faith, hope and love through the Lord Jesus Christ. See you in worship and blessings in this upcoming Lenten season! Pastor Clark Rev. Clark Sawyer WORSHIP ATTENDANCE IN DECEMBER 2012 & JANUARY 2013

Francois Lacroix is the Preacher for the evening. You are invited to be with seven other Presbyterian churches as we begin the Lenten season of 2013!!

SOUND SYSTEM CLASS

Anyone who is interested in learning more about operating the Sound System, please see Tommy Walters. An informal and informational "class" on the sound system is in the works. We would love to be able to create a rotating schedule of volunteers to oversee the sound board for Worship services and special programs. Any questions can be directed to Tommy or the Church office.

Many thanks to all the people who volunteered to wrap packages for Habitat for Humanity before Christmas! It is a major fundraiser for Habitat and your service is very much appreciated. Thank you!

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR!

Have you ever wondered why some bells are so much larger or smaller than others? Have you wondered why some bell choirs wear gloves, and some don't? Have you pondered how much a bell weighs, or how much a single handbell or choir chime costs? Well, continue to look in the monthly newsletters for an informational "Handbell 101" section. If you have a question that you are losing sleep over, send Tommy or Jennifer an email, and your questions will be answered!

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN
Presbyterian women wish to thank the congregation for the wonderful response to the Willing Workers Keep Me Warm trees. We received many beautiful mittens, caps, scarves, sweaters, coats and other warm clothing items. On December 14, we delivered several boxes and large bags of clothing each to VOICe and Family Pathways. The balance of items received after that date are being delivered to Family Pathways in January. Thank you and God bless you for your help.

YEAR-END STATEMENTS
Annual Giving Summary Statements for 2012 have been prepared and mailed. Please check your statement carefully to make sure that it correctly reflects the offerings you have made to Hill Church. If you feel that there is an error on your statement, or you made a contribution to Hill Church in 2012 and did not receive a statement, please contact Jennifer Gilliland, our church Financial Secretary. THANK-YOU NOTE WAS R ECEIVED from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for our Churchs recent contribution to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. We are grateful to God for those who gave to this fund, and we ask that you continue to pray for those affected by this storm. The Hill Churchs total donation to the fund was $635.00. A

BAKING FOR MEALS ON WHEELS

Each year in April, members of Hill Church contribute baked goods to Meals on Wheels. We hope to supply them with enough desserts for 3 weeks or more. On Sunday morning, April 7, donations of cookies, muffins, cupcakes, quickbreads, pies, etc. can be brought to the stage area of the Fellowship Hall. Monetary donations are welcome if you prefer no to bake. Please omit nuts and frostings. Please not that the Willing Workers are no longer collecting medicine bottles.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

As we move into the new year, we remind you that our scholarship fund needs replenished in order to send funds by early September. This past September, over $6200 was transferred to the Bubiashie District scholarship committee, resulting in assistance for 31 young women to attend high school, college, or a technical school. Thanks to each and every one of last years contributors. Further, we invite all others to join us in this endeavor in 2013. Remember, setting aside one dollar each day for this fund can add up in a short time. The 31 scholars represent all five churches of the district. A scholarship is especially important for the three students in the smallest and poorest congregation. 24 of the young women are in high school, six are in college (one in medical college), and one is in midwifery training school. Their ages range from 16 to 26. There are 19 different high schools represented. Remember that Accra has over six million residents. On January 14th, we received a Christmas card from the Bubiashie congregation addressed to the Hill congregation, wishing us a very merry Christmas. It took 21 days for delivery. The card is hanging with the Bubiashie banner. Please keep the Bubiashie District churches, the Bubiashie scholarship committee, as well as the students in your prayers. ~Jim Ihlenfeld for the Ghana Mission Task Force THE CHURCH DOOR TO THE ALLEY will now be kept locked (except on Sunday mornings) due to the recent theft of a flat screen TV from the Deacons room. Signs are posted on that door listing the Church number for anyone who needs to use it during the week. The staff will be aware of the daily church schedule and unlock the door as needed.

CENTENNIAL CAPITAL CAMPAIGN WRAPS UP APRIL 30, 2013

The Hill Church Centennial Capital Campaign was a two phase campaign. During Phase I a total of $69,853 was raised for repairs to the church roof. During Phase II $124, 722 was pledged for renovations to the churchs fellowship hall and electrical system, as well as for upgrades to the churchs flooring and carpeting. As of December 31, 2012 a total of $105,585.73 had been received in pledge payments and other gifts and $29,465.59 remained to be paid. In January, Jennifer prepared and distributed a special giving statement, summarizing the amounts pledged and paid to date for anyone who had given to Phase II. If you have not received this statement, or have a question about your statement please contact Jennifer at the church office. Please note there is no problem if your circumstances have changed and you need more time to fulfill your pledge. You may continue paying on your centennial capital campaign pledge beyond April 30th. Just make a note on the memo line of your check that your donation is for the centennial capital campaign so Jennifer can direct it to the proper account. The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee appreciates the ongoing generosity of the Hill Church Family of Faith. Your gifts have made our church home a safe, functional and beautiful place to worship and serve our Lord.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
The Annual Congregational Meeting will be held in the sanctuary after the 10:30A.M. Worship Service on Sunday, February 10, 2013. BREAKING THE SILENCE and Taking the Road Less Traveled

The Adult Sunday School Classes on March 10 and 17 will be led by Rev. Mike Winship who will share his own personal journey of changes of mind, his new Spirit and alliance and advocacy for gay people. He will raise the key questions so many ask (or should ask) and the issues that divide yet few really discuss. He will focus on the Scriptures with new light, revealing many misunderstandings still commonly held, especially among the churches. The Apostle Paul said that as ones who follow Jesus Christ, we are called to grow, mature, and transform; to see others as Jesus sees themthat means to change, first by renewing our minds, and then our ways (Romans 12:2). Have you yourself changed lately? If not, then why not?

A man in the Middle Ages became fed up with humanity and decided to spend the rest of his life in a monastery. The abbot warned him that he would have to take a vow of silence and live the rest of his life as a scribe. The man replied, "No problem. I'm sick of talking. Ten years went by, and the abbot called for the man. He told him that he was a model monk and perfect scribe, and they were very happy with him. As per tradition he was allowed say two words. So he nodded and said, "Food cold." The abbot sent him on his way. Ten years later, he was brought before the abbot again and told how pleased they were with his performance, and he was again allowed two more words. The man said, "Bed hard," and was sent back to work. Another ten years went by and again the abbot sent for the man, telling him he was the best monk they had ever had, and that he was allowed another two words. The man nodded and said, "I quit." The abbot replied in a disgusted tone, "Doesn't surprise me. You're done nothing but complain since you got here." KIDS CORNER
