How You Can Help

You can help make ScrapTheftAlert.com an even better tool by informing other recyclers and law enforcement personnel about the system and asking them to subscribe to alerts. The alert system is free, and recyclers do not need to be ISRI members to participate.

A New Tool to Help Law Enforcement Fight the Theft of Metals and Other Materials

What is ScrapTheftAlert.com?
For years, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI) has worked to be a part of the solution to the problem of metal theft. It helps police, it helps our communities, and it helps our industry (more than two-thirds of recyclers report being a victim of metal theft in the past year). ISRI has developed www.ScrapTheftAlert.com, a new online theft reporting system available to law enforcement and recyclersfree of charge. The system allows recyclers to receive alerts for materials reported stolen within 100 miles of their location. It also allows law enforcement (and certain corporate security personnel) to post alerts that are sent to subscribers within a 100-mile radius of the theft location. When warranted, the alert radius can be expanded to larger areas. ScrapTheftAlert.com is faster and easier than any previous reporting program. Once your registration has been completed, law enforcement (and certain corporate security personnel) will be able to post alerts immediately, without the delay caused by intervention by ISRI staff. ISRIs database of email subscribers currently tops 8,000 scrap recycling and law enforcement professionals. With your help that number can continue to grow.

Material Recovery
A wire manufacturer in Colorado reported the theft of wire spools to the ScrapTheft Alert.com system and a cashier at a nearby scrap facility recognized the stolen materials. The cashier reviewed surveillance records to identify the seller of the materials, sharing what she found with the policewho determined from the surveillance pictures that the seller worked at the wire manufacturer. The suspect was arrested.

ISRIPart of the Solution

As the Voice of the Recycling Industry, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI) is leading the way in advocating the vital role scrap recycling plays in the U.S. economy, global trade, the environment, and sustainable development. A Washington, D.C.-based trade association, ISRI represents nearly 1,600 private, for-profit companies operating at more than 7,000 facilities in the United States and 30 countries worldwide that process, broker, and industrially consume scrap commodities, including ferrous and nonferrous metals, paper, electronics, rubber, plastics, glass, and textiles. In addition, ISRIs associate members include equipment and service providers to the scrap recycling industry. It is estimated that ISRI members employ more than 85,000 people, and their companies range in size from small, one-location operations to large, publicly-held corporations with multiple facilities worldwide. Other ISRI members focus on the business of brokering and trading recyclable materials, consolidating materials from a variety of businesses to expedite the fulfillment of consumer needs. For several years, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), the national association of the scrap recycling industry, has been actively working to be a part of the solution to the metal and material theft issue. Our experience has shown that the single most effective tool in this battle is the ISRIsponsored Web site, www.ScrapTheftAlert.com.
