COURSE CONTEXT The study of leadership requires a knowledge and understanding of contemporary leadership theories and ideas. This course introduces students to the key issues and concerns of leadership. We will examine significant insights on the nature and character of leadership. The course focuses on several questions, beginning with the most fundamental: What is leadership? Students will also consider the various parties who participate in leadership, the processes by and through which it is conducted, the conditions which affect it, and the ends in service of which it operates. The course also addresses key aspects of development as a key component in the advancement of leaders. Assignments Task Class participation and attendance A mark of 5% is given for regular attendance and participation in class Participation marks should be awarded to students who answer questions and actively participate Quizzes and exercises Provide written answers (about half a page on each) to the following questions. Students should also be prepared to answer these questions in class. 1. What is the difference between a manager and a leader? 2. How would you define an effective leader? 3. What theories of motivation can a leader use and how (you should also refer to your Organisation Behaviour studies and your first semester work on motivation). 4. Refer to Unit II.5 Ways of leading: which approach do you feel is the most effective, and explain why? 5. Define the term leadership in your own words. 6. What is the difference between training and management development? 7. What is your opinion on the question: Can leaders be trained?

Assignment You should provide a written answer to the following question. Your answer should be between one and two pages.
