A Vision for Arborfield GArrison & AdjoininG lAnd january 2013

over 200 local people braved the snow and participated in the Community Planning Weekend held on friday 18th and saturday 19th of january at Arborfield Community Centre. A consultation masterplan was on display, illustrating draft proposals for 3,500 new homes, a new secondary school, two new primary schools, a village centre with a range of shops and two smaller neighbourhood centres.

local residents were given the opportunity to have their say about the proposals and discuss issues with landowner representatives and the consultant team. The need to provide a bypass around Arborfield Cross, relieve pinch points where existing peak hour traffic congestion occurs, and to upgrade the sewerage works were all discussed. Cllr david lee, the leader of Wokingham borough Council, assured participants that their concerns about traffic would be addressed, and announced the establishment by Wokingham borough Council of a Transport forum to give people the opportunity to have further discussion about road improvements. Groups of residents worked with consultants and landowners around maps and plans to develop a revised masterplan. Alternative locations for the two primary schools were suggested. routes and linkages for cyclepaths, footpaths and bridleways connecting the area to surrounding villages and open spaces were also mapped out. There was overwhelming consensus that new meeting spaces will be needed, including a multi-purpose community hub (similar to the finchampstead baptist Church Centre), in order to foster the integration of the new development into the existing community and to provide new enhanced facilities for all.
