QUESTION 1 a) Piling hammer is designed to deliver an impact to the top of the pile. Briefly explain two types of piling hammer. (10 marks) b) Explain with the aid of sketches the following piles: i) Precast concrete pile ii) Steel sheet piles iii) Timber piles (15 marks)

QUESTION 2 a) A client has proposed a construction of a wharf in Kuching. You are required to advise on the suitable type of pile foundation for the structures. Support your answer with reasons and sketches. (15 marks) b) Explain five (5) factors to be considered in choosing the types of foundation to be used. (10 marks)

QUESTION 3 a) Explain two (2) main objectives of conducting pile tests and explain with relevant sketches, one type of pile test that is commonly used in Malaysia. (10 marks) b) A developer wishes to build a shopping complex in Kota Samarahan. After a few meetings with the consultants, he decided to use bore piles. Using suitable sketches, explain in detail the sequence of operation of bore pile using rotary auger. (15 marks)
