Carnal

Corinthians

Fighters will discard anything good about tongues because they say that the church at Corinth was carnal. They say, "It had a low class of people in it who were guilty of carnality, fornication, and drunkenness." They usc the whole service on the Lord's Day telling their members the faults of the Corinthians, blaming the Holy Ghost for it, "SOME" HAD FAULTS Any church which has thousands of members, as that church must have had, will have some members who need discipline. "Some" were puffed up. There was fornication "among them," That did not say they were all guilty. You cannot judge all the church by the man who was guilty no more than you could judge all the apostles by Judas, These people were just converted from heathenism and had never been taught, Paul was teaching them, These few needed the Holy Ghost to teach them (John 14:26), Their fruits had not developed. They had not been taught Christian principles as the civilized world. They preferred one preacher above another (some did). The same thing happens in your church among "some" of the members, You cannot blame the Holy Ghost for their fault no more than you can blame salvation in your church, I will admit that some of them defrauded their companions and some women did not have long hair (Chapters 7, 11), but we find that in other churches which are smaller. If you were to buy one hundred baby chicks and some were to die, would you kill the rest? If one tree in your orchard gets diseased, would you burn them all? Why don't you take a look at other New Testament Churches? All of them had the Holy Ghost just like

the Corinthians. I know of no church more spiritual than the Ephesians. Read that book and see the mountain peaks of Christian graces, especially love. And they spoke with tongues (Acts 19:1-6). Take notice of the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians, chapter five, especially love. Paul took this same Gospel to them, with tongues (Mark 16:17, 20). The same thing went to all the countries. THEY REPENTED Paul accomplished the purpose he started out to do. He taught them better. And what he advised them to do in 1 Cor. 14:4, 5 helped do it Later we see that Paul is glad to acknowledge that they are his written epistles, written with tile Spirit (2 Cor. 3:2-3). They came to repentance (2 Cor. 7:9) and were forgiven (2 Cor. 2:7). Then Paul could boast of their faithfulness (2 Cor. 7:4, 8:24). We see that Paul acknowledges that he had great confidence in them (2 Cor. 7:16. God did not say that they talked With tongues without love. If you could discard tongues with 1 Cor. 13:1, you could discard prophecy, knowledge, and faith with the next verse. To the person who preaches that they did not have love, I cite you the place where Paul said they had sincere love (2 Cor. 8:8), and they proved it (2 Cor. 8:14, 24; 9:1-5, 13). The Holy Ghost gave them power to come out of heathen teaching. That is why many churches need the Holy Ghost today (Acts 1:8, John 14:26). Paul said they stood by faith. ABOVE THE AVERAGE CHURCH They were sanctified (l Cor. 1:2). They came behind in no gift (1 Cor. 1:7). They were enriched by Jesus in EVERYTHING (1 Cor. 1:6). Although they had (me fellow who was guilty of fornication, they had power to turn him over to Satan, causing him to come to repentance (2 Cor. 7:9) and obtain forgiveness (2 Cor. 2 :7, 1 Cor. 5: 1). Many churches, with mere forms, today would just "turn them out" and let them be lost; and yet claim to have more than that powerful

Corinthian Church. They had power over Satan (1 Cor. 5:5). They had spiritual gifts manifested in their midst; that included the word of knowledge, the word of wisdom, discerning of spirits, healing, miracles, and faith (1 Cor. 12). They were ready for the rapture (1 Cor. 15:51). Whatever condition the church was in, Paul told them to be steadfast and unmoveable, and their labor was not in vain (1 Cor. 15:58). The Spirit dwelled in them (Rom. 8:9, 1 Cor.0:16). They were washed, justified, and sanctified (1 Cor. 6:11). They were members of Christ's body (1 Cor. 6:17, 1 Cor. 12), with old things passed away and ALL THINGS NEW (2 Cor. 5:17). They were God's property (1 Cor. 6: 19);the Holy Ghost was in them (1 Cor. 6:19); they had love (1 Cor. 2:9). At least they obeyed the commandment, "Forbid not to speak with tongues," (1 Cor. 14:39).

FORT WORTH. TEXAS, Feb. 7-We have just closed a revival campaign which drew the largest crowds in the history of the North Side Assembly of God. It began Dec. 18 and continued for 71~ weeks. W. V. Grant of Malvern, Ark., was the evangelist. Every night many responded to the altar calls and sought the Lord-as many as 125 in one night. Every night for over 50 nights people were filled with the Holy Spirit, as many as 40 in a single night. They were also filled in their homes, on the bus, in the Sunday School, at C. A. meeting, and in many of the day services. There were seekers in the prayer rooms until the early hours of the morning after practically every night service. We know of about 700 who received the Acts 2:4 experience. The power of the Lord was present to heal, and this advertised the meetings and drew the crowds. Many different kinds of affiictions were healed in answer to the prayer of faith. Several people were spared the necessity of undergoing operations. We have dozens of signed testimonies of healings but we are withholding them from publication until sufficient time has elapsed for verification. The revival spirit remains in the church as it had for months before these meetings. The reason that God paid us such a gracious visitation is that the people prayed. God wants to send revival to every body of believers and He will if they will pray.-Jacob Filbert, Pastor.

Received

It Without

Tongues

Some say, "Oh, you received it that way, but I did not; I received it without tongues." Some say, "Oh, I received it when I was sanctified." Is that true! You did not receive it THE BIBLE WAY Jesus told them how they would know when it came. He said the Holy Ghost would speak (Mark 15:17, John 15:26-27). The testimony of two witnesses is true. A witness on the stand is no good unless he talks. "That shall He speak" (John 16: 13). Jesus said the Holy Ghost would speak. Although some have the nerve to say Jesus was wrong. They ALL SPOKE in tongues at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). If we get the Pentecostal experience, we will ALL SPEAK. Peter said the same thing would happen just before the sun is turned into blood, just before the notable day of the Lord, (Acts 2:15-20). God said it was for ALL (Acts 2:38-39), (the Pentecostal experience). All three thousand that were added to the Church continued stcdf'astly in the Apostles' doctrine (Acts 2:41-42), that includes tongues (Acts 10:46). Paul received the Holy Ghost and wrote, with the pen of inspiration, "I speak with tongues more than ye all" (1 Cor. 14:18). In Acts 19 they ALL spoke with tongues. In Acts 10 they ALL spoke with tongues. The Apostles accepted tongues as THE EVIDENCE The Apostles knew the people had received the Holy Ghost, "for (because) they heard them speak with tongues" (Acts 10:46,11:15-17). Please notice that Peter did not say, "We know they have it for they saw a ball of fire, or they fell under the power, became unconscious, saw a vision,

began to live good, win souls, and had faith, felt the Spirit, had great joy, loved people," or any other thing. All these things, the people in the Bible had already experienced; so these could not have been the evidence. Abraham had faith (Heb, 11:17), Joseph was a good man (Luke 23:50), John the Baptist won souls (Matt. 3:6), John loved; all these things the people had before the Pentecostal Baptism was given (John 7:'38). One feels the Spirit and has great joy BEFORE he is baptized in the Holy Ghost (Luke 24:52). Many get grf'at joy and run off and say they have it. The Samaritans, after they received great joy, remained there until Peter and John came down and helped them receive the Holy Ghost (Acts 8:8, 17). Suppose someone would tell you to move into his house and make yourself at home, and feel welcome as long as you did not speak. The Holy Ghost surely has a right to speak, dwelling in His own temple (1 Cor. 6:19) . In the Greek, Latin, Hebrew, or any other language, a-l-l means ALL. You do not have to go to school until you are grayheaded to know that. Nowhere in the Bible do you find that they received the Holy Ghost and "part of them began to speak with tongues," or "all, but one, began to speak with tongues." Remember there are two classes of people who God said would speak with tongues: (1) All the Jews, or the Circumcision, and (2) all others who believed in Christ (Acts 11:17, 10:46). If you are a Christian, you are in one of these groups. If I were you, I would want to BE CERTAIN to just suppose, go by guesswork, or by what some man said. According to the Holy Scriptures, when we hear one speak with tongues WE KNOW he has it (Acts 10:46). Get it that way and when you are asked if you have it, you will not have to say, "I believe," "I think," or "someone told
It is too important

me." You can do like Jesus, say, "It is written," as you put your finger on Acts 10:46. Some say, "1 know I got something." I know you did. So did the Old Testament saints and John the Baptist. A few nights ago a good man in Flint, Michigan. started to leave the prayer room. I asked him if he had the Holy Ghost. He said, "Yes, I have had it for years, but not the tongues." I laid hands on him and in a few minutes he KNEW he had it because he spoke with tongues. Then he testified that he then had it the Bible way. One thing sure, you will never speak with tongues against your will. We have seen hundreds from every known denomination receive the real Pentecostal Baptism lately. They all speak in tongues as in Acts 2:4, many of whom had been told they had it for years. They will ALL tell you they were not certain, but now they are certain.

God Said Tongues

Would Cease

"According to the 13th chapter of 1 Corinthians, love is the greatest of all gifts ... God said tongues would cease." The people use this statement for an excuse to justify themselves for not receiving the Pentecostal Baptism. HOLY GHOST LOVE Charity is not the Red Cross or some social club. Paul was speaking of Holy Ghost love, the love that is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost (Rom. 5:5). He did not say it was possible to speak with tongues of men and of angels without Holy Ghost love. He meant "though it were possible." And if verse one would discard tongues, then verse two would discard faith. Your argument is that faith, hope, and charity abideth. Be careful! It is no more possible to have tongues of angels without love than it is to have faith to move mountains without love. Paul did not say it was possible to do those things without love. He was teaching the necessity of both together. Faith with love, prophecy with love, knowledge with love, and tongues with love. Love would not discard tongues no more than it would discard faith, knowledge, or prophecy. As soon as Paul finishes the 13th chapter, he commands us to seek BOTH love and spiritual gifts. (This was all in the same letter when he wrote it. Remember man divided it into chapters.) Tongues is one of the gifts. Do you observe this commandment? (1 Cor. 14:1) . Since both tongues and love edifies us (builds us up), they cannot be separated where you can have tongues without love. They belong together (1 Cor. 8:1,14:4). PERFECT LIBERTY Answer this! Did God say, "Now abideth only faith,

hope, and charity?" Then why would man say so? If even faith remains, then we can yet be made whole; and miracles are not passed away, as some preach (MK.5:34). Some tell us that when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. That is when we shall see face to face, and know as we are known. When the perfect age comes, we will no longer see through a glass darkly. The part will be changed into the whole. Instead of our knowing in part, we will know as we are known. Instead of our having just a gift of divers kinds of tongues (1 Cor. 12:10), we will have the whole heavenly language (Zcph. 3:9). Some say that when the New Testament came, then miracles ceased. If that were true, it would have been better for it not to have been given. God did not say the New Testament was a law of bondage. That would be imperfect. God said it was the perfect law of liberty (Is. 61 :1, Luke 4:18). The Gospel is glad news, not bad news, \Ve preach liberty and not bondage (Rom, 8:21, 2 Cor, 3:17), His Word yet saves, causes you to grow, sanctifies, heals, and fills with the Spirit, when obeyed. THE PERFECT AGE The Perfect Age has not yet come. so we still need gifts in the Church. We are still in the Church Age. If Jesus treated the early church one way and us another, then He would have two bodies instead of one, and He would have respect to persons. But the Holy Ghost is the miracle worker. He surely would not work miracles in every other age except his own. We "are in the same dispensation as were Peter, James and John. God said tongues. miracles, and healings were put in the Church AFTER preachers. teachers. helps, and governments (1 Cor. 12:28). Would God take them out of the Church as soon as He put them in? This chapter 1 Cor. 13, says knowledge could cease at the same time that tongues would. Do you know anything? Tongues will last as long as preachers and teachers

(1 Cor. 12:28, 13:10). Prophecy will pass away at the same time tongues will cease (v. 13). We can prove that time has not yet come, for the two witnesses will prophesy during the tribulation period, which has not yet come (Rev. 11:3), and there will be other prophets in the last days (Rev. 18:20, 24). The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Rev. 19:10). Do you testify of your Saviour? We will know as we are known when we see Jesus and not before (1 John 3:2). The gifts are given for the perfecting of the saints, "Till we come in the unity of the faith ... into a perfect man, unto the measure of the statue of the fullness of Christ (Eph. 4:12-13). The gifts will remain until that which is perfect is come. You need them; but you will first have to receive the Pentecostal Baptism.

Other Gifts Will Do

Some, honestly or dishonestly, advance the argument that just any other manifestation of the Holy Spirit can be taken for the evidence, that one has the Pentecostal Baptism. But I say again, let's go BACK TO THE BIBLE Jesus told His disciples that they would speak with tongues (Mk. 16:17). Compare this with Matthew 28: 19-20, Acts 10:46, and Isaiah 28:11. Also look what Jesus told them in John 15:26-27 and 16:13 and see if that was not what they were expecting. Since Jesus had told them that tongues would come with the experience, would they have been satisfied with any other manifestations? In one place it came as a rushing mighty wind and tongues as fire. But this "appeared to them," and was not heard by the multitude as the evidence. Neither do we see that they accepted tha t as the evidence as they did tongues (Acts 10:46). We do not think that they saw tongues in the air, but rather when they began to speak it seemed as if their tongues were on fire. Neither of these things could be the evidence; for Isaiah's mouth had been touched by fire BEFORE the Holy Ghost was given (Is. 6:8, John 7:38-39). Salvation came as a wind BEFORE Pentecost (John 3:8). Other manifestations may be along sometimes, but they do not crowd out speaking with tongues. NO GIFT IS THE EVIDENCE 1 Corinthians 12 is not dealing with one receiving the Pentecostal Baptism; it is dealing with gifts given to people who have already been baptized with the Holy Ghost. These gifts are not given to all, but divided "as He will." One is given one gift, and another is given a different gift (vs. 8-11), while the Pentecostal evi-

10

dence is given to ALL (Acts 2:4, Acts 2:15-20), Search and sec if you can find in any place, \\'here they received the Holy Ghost, if just part of them spoke with tongues (Acts 2,8,10,19), Yet in dealing with Spiritual gift s, which come subsequent to the Spirit Baptism, Paul asked, "Do all speak with tongues?" (1 Cor, 12: 30), Also when dealing with tongues he says, "I would that vo ALL spakc with tongues , , ." (1 Cor, 14:5), Here he is telling us all. even after we receive the exneril nco. we should follow his example and speak with t onuuos rcgularlv. Search once more Acts 10:46 to see if it says any of the following: "We know that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost, for we heard thorn prophesy," or "For there appeared unto them a wind," "They had great wisdom," "They healed the sick." "They had faith," or any other manifestations, Only' about tongues docs the Bible say "they began," (in reference to the Holy Ghost Baptism) (Acts 2:4), This means two thinus: Thoy had never spoken before, and thev did not stop there, React Acts 10:46 and 11 :15-17 and sec that the Apostles recognized tongues as the evidence, Seven of the nine spiritual gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians] 2 were manif c sted BEFORE Pentecost, therefore they could not be the evidence, If either of them could be the evidence, then the Holy Ghost was given hefore Pentecost, making John 7:38-39 untrue, Daniel and Solomon had wisdom and knowledge: Elisha had discerning of spirits manifested through him: the Disciples healed the sick before Pentecost: Elijah was given miracles: Abraham had faith: and Saul prophesied, (They were only given for special anointing, and not as g-ifts before Pentecost. Yet they were manifested before Pentecost. As tongues can be manifested in a man without his having the gift of tongues, so healing, etc" were manifested through these men before the gifts were given.) The two gifts not spoken of in the Old Testament are divers kinds of tongues and interpretation of

11

tongues. There could be no interpretation of tongues without tongues; therefore, interpretation could not have been the evidence. Tongues would be the only thing left to be the evidence. EVIDENCE AND GIFT As I have said, in speaking of the evidence, they ALL spoke in tongues (Acts 2:4); but in speaking of the gift, only two or three were allowed to speak (1 Cor. 14:27) . In speaking-of the gift, silence was demanded where there was no interpreter; in speaking of the evidence, they all spoke in tongues at once with no interpreter (Acts 2, 10, 19). In speaking of the evidence, they were speaking unto Goo, praising and magnifying His name (Acts 10:46,[ Cor.14:2); in speaking of the gift, we are speaking to people and need an interpreter (1 Cor.
14:G, 2R).

Scripturally speaking. just how would you know what to accept for the evidence, if you refuse to receive as they did in the Bible? How would you know you had it if you refused to go by Acts 10:46? It is too important not to be certain.

The Samaritans

Did Not Speak

The one place that the people resort to, in order to prove that tongues arc not necessary, is in the eighth chapter of Acts. They say, "Oh, yes, I believe in the .~ift according to 1 Corinthians 12:28, but the eighth chapter of Acts shows that tongues are not the evidonee." But they arc goin.g by what the Bible did not say, rather than wha t the Bible did say. \VIIAT IS YOUR PROOF? It is stran.ge thai those .good people, who claim to believe in the .gift, fail to have it operating in their churches. Thov will not allow it to be manifested. That shows 1ha I 1hey are not sincere. Because tho ciuhth chapter of Acts is silent un tongues it does not prove that the people in that place did not speak in tonauos. It shows that they recognized tongues as being the evidence, to the extent thai they did not take time to mention the details in every case (Acts 10:46). For example, it is understood that a person receives joy when he is saved. We often say that certain people were saved, without going into detail to explain that they received joy. Since you cannot base a proof upon something not mentioned, that would not prove that the people did not receive joy. REASON PROVES THEY DID If that chapter were the only chapter where it was recorded that people received the Holy Ghost then you would stand a fifty-fifty chance of being right-or fifty per cent right. The fact that they talked in tongues four places out of five, in the records we have of people receiving the Holy Ghost (Acts, chapters 2, 8, 9, 10; 1 Cor. 14:18), would allow you only one-fifth of the fifty per cent. This would leave you ten per cent right. Six more places where the Bible definitely states that

13

they would speak in tongues (Isa. 28:11, Mark 16:17, John 15:26, Acts ]0:46, Acts 11:16-17,1 Cor, 14) makes the percentage of your being right seven to one smaller, This v-ould be a fraction over one per cent, and that on guess work, or on what the Bible does not say, Remember the penalty of adding to the Word of God, Simon offered money for something supernatural. Reason tells you that he would not have offered to buy something that was not real. He would not desire a thing after someone had said to him: "Take it by faith and just believe you have it." It was not great joy that Simon saw, for they already had that before Peter and John came to them, It could not have been the power to win souls or to be spiritual: for Simon cared nothing for the Spiritual things of God, It could not have been miracles or healing, for that took place he fore Peter and John arrived, It even took place before the Holy Ghost was given, The same is true with preaching and winning souls (Luke 9:1, 2: John 7:38, ,19), It could not have been the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, discerning of spirits, or faith: for one cannot see nor heal' these things, Acts 10:46 and Acts 11 :16,17 show that the Apostles took Acts 2:4 as the established pattern, A wagon has an established pattern, If you buy a wagon and tell me about it, I cannot prove by your statement that the wagon did not have a tongue, RECORDS SHOW THEY DID Go with me to Church history and the ancient records, In every century up until the year 1900 when this latter rain began to be poured out, the commentators said that they spoke in tongues at Samaria, I now have records before me where twenty-two commentators and historians say they spoke with tongues at Samaria, As this book is not for that purpose, and space will not permit me to go into detail in every thought, I will refer the honest reader to the book, "What Meaneth This," by Carl Brumback, price $2,00,

Order from the Gospel Publishing House, 434 W. Pacific Street, Springfield, Mo. I will cite one record so you will never have any doubt left in your mind: In his great work, "Word Studies In the New Testament," Dr. Robertson comes to the one Greek word translated "When Simon saw" (Acts 8:18) and makes this comment: "THIS PARTICIPLE SHOWS PLAINLY THAT THOSE WHO RECEIVED THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT SPOKE WITH TONGUES." It is too important for you to run such a narrow risk. I would be sure about it. You can be sure. God has no respect to persons. It is so easy to get the evidence. You will say that you are one per cent right. But if you are sincere you will acknowledge that ninetynine out of one hundred should talk with tongues. (One out of one hundred in your church does not speak with tongues.) Brother Paul says that he would that all would speak with tongues (1 Cor. 14:5).

Other Tongues Are Just Other Languages

Some people tell us the only reason they spoke with tongues in Acts 2:4 was because the people there spoke other languages. Others have been taught that the people there heard only their own languages, making the miracle in the hearing instead of the speaking. Some tell us that the speaking in new tongues is a person speaking the language of a Christian after he is converted. Still others say that tongues were only given to help them preach the Gospel to the world. THEY SPOKE WITH OTHER TONGUES The Bible settled it-they spoke with tongues when the Holy Ghost came (Acts 2:4). These people were ignorant and unlearned men (Acts 4:13). The Holy Spirit gave the utterance (Acts 2:4). It was a supernatural utterance of another language. It was the supernatural that brought the multitude together. The fact that this was a supernatural language, and a fulfillment of what Jesus said would come to pass (Mark 16:17) proves that the new tongues, part of the signs Jesus said would follow, meant more than the tongue of just any Christian. It being merely another language would put it on a natural plane. In that case just any sinner who learns other languages would have the gift of tongues. I will remind you again that 1 Cor. 12 tells us about spiritual gifts that were set in order in the Church and not natural gifts set in man's church. WHAT DOES GOD SAY? The honest seeker after the truth will notice that Peter did not preach to the people in other tongues. The people gathered there not because of the preaching. Peter preached because they had gathered there. They gathered thee from different parts of the city because

16

they Were worshipping God (not speaking to people) in different languages, they all being Galileans. They were all at once speaking of the wonderful works of God and praising the Lord (Acts 2:1-11). Then, after that, Peter stood up and preached in one common Jewish language, that they all could understand. Even after 3,000 were converted they had all things common. Remember he was preaching to the Jews only. Paul spoke with an unknown tongue he could not understand (1 Cor. 14:15, 19). He forbade people teaching with tongues unless someone there had the gift of interpretation, showing it could not be understood (1 Cor. 14:28). If one knew the language he was speaking in other tongues, if he had learned it, why did Paul command him to pray that God would give him the interpretation? (v. 13). The same is true with singing and praising in tongues (vs. 15 and 16). He could not understand it! WHA T ABOUT UNKNOWN TONGUES? Some have even been taught that when the word "unknown" in 1 Cor. 14:2 was italicized that meant that it did not belong there. Then why was it put there? Even if it were left out the rest of the verse shows it was unknown when it plainly says, "No man understandeth him." Better learned people know why this word was italicized. One word in the Greek can mean two or three of our words. There was simply no word to match it in one Greek word. Unknown tongues cannot be other languages; for not a man in the world can understand them (1 Cor. 14:2). There is a vast difference between other tongues, as one speaks when the evidence of the Holy Ghost comes, as in Acts 2:4, and an unknown tongue, as the gift God set in the Church. Other tongues are other languages spoken supernaturally by the Spirit of God, while an unknown tongue is a heavenly language-Mysteries in the Spirit. Not a man in the world can understand it, unless God givf's the interpretation through the Spirit, (1 Cor. 12:10,11; 14:2).

17

Paul Discouraged Tongues

People have made this remark so much that it almost sounds like a passage of Scripture. The tradition of the elders has made the Word of God of none effect in some lives. PAUL REGULATED THE GIFT There is a difference in the gift of tongues and the evidence. Paul only regulated the gift as it was manifested in the public assembly. But that is no proof that he discouraged it. There were more than one with the gift of tongues. Paul gave them the same instructions as he did the prophets, to speak one at a time, (1 Cor. 14:27). Just because he put the regulation on the prophets would you say that he discouraged prophecy? (vs. 29, 30). He established it. The man who speaks with tongues, and the one who speaks prophecy, are prompted by the same Spirit, (1 Cor. 12:10-11). The fact that I have brakes on my car, only goes to prove that I have a car, and that it is necessary for me to have it. Just because brakes are recommended for a car is no proof that one is discouraging the USE' of a car. That makes it more important! WHO KILLED THE HORSE? I know of a man who boasted about a fine pair of spurs he had for a horse. He was also bragging about his beautiful bridle and saddle. "Where is the horse?" someone asked. "I rode him to death," he replied. What do you need with a bridle and saddle if you have no horse? What do you need with brakes if you have no car? What do you need with a regulator if you have nothing to regulate? Many people are up in the pulpit bragging about Paul's regulator, when they have nothing to regulate. The horse has been dead for years and they are still spurring him. Paul did have some-

18

thing to regulate. Even some Pentecostal horses are about to fall to staves. You can see every rib as they are starving to death, trying to live on some book report, that has been taken from a book, that was writfen by some preacher, who has never felt God's Spirit. The pastors are spurring and riding instead of feeding. They do not have anything to regulate. They have no business with Paul's regulator. PAUL ENCOURAGED TONGUES Paul had a healthy church. Everyone of his members in that large church had a gift WHEN HE GOT TO CHURCH (1 Cor. 14:26). They did not visit and gossip for hours before they started the church service. If we would have a New Testament church we will see New Testament results. They did not sit and let the pastor prize and prop, preach and pray an hour before they themselves prayed through. No wonder so many preachers today are taking nervous breakdowns. They are pulling the load and the members are riding. Get in and turn on the power! Start the motor! No wonder, in Paul's church that the secrets of their hearts were made manifest, and the sinners fell down on their faces and reported that God was in them of a truth, (v. 25). The Spirit was working instead of psychology and worldly wisdom. Paul said that they should not forbid the people to speak with tongues, (1 Cor. 14 :39). He wished all his members would speak with tongues, (v. 5). He said that tongues edified: edified the church when interpreted, and edified the individual when it was not interpreted (vs. 4, 5, 14, 15). He said that he spoke with tongues more than them all, (v. 18). He practiced what he preached. Paul did not put any restrictions on tongues, except teaching in public, and that without an interpreter. And he said that when one interpreted, it was best for three to do the speaking. But remember that this had nothing to do with praising, praying, or singing with tongues. I know of no one who teaches, or practices

19

having two people give out a message at once, 01' teaches people without an interpreter. How can a fighter full of the devil tell when it is a message, 01' when it is a praise? I am sure that he cannot teach a Spirit-filled person. God said the spiritual could do Ow judging, (1 Cor. 14:29; 1 Cor. 2:15). A person without the Holy Spirit is apt to misjudge every time. Paul encouraged tongues and said t hat they \\ ('n' equal to prophecy when interpreted, (1 Cor. lL")). He put no restrictions on private devotions. which are to build one's faith, (Jude 20). Seek and ye shall find.

Tongues Least of All Gifts

"I don't see how tongues help; I only believe in tongues as a gift: they can't be understood." Such were the words of one whom Paul called a barbarian. We often hear people say: "That speaking in tongues does not sound intelligent: my reason rebels against it; it is confusion." This is just a part of the things people say when they want to rebel against God's plain commandment (1 Cor. 14:39). AT FIRST GLANCE When a natural man gives the first glance he may agree with some of the above excuses. But Paul said the opposite to what some accuse him of having said. Some people say: "Paul is my preacher, he said he would rather speak five words in his own understanding than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue." But the devil leaves out part of God's scripture, even as he did when speaking with Eve in the Garden of Eden and with Jesus in the wilderness. Let us quote all the sentences and quote them just as they are written in the Bible: "I thank my God that I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, THAT BY MY VOICE I MIGHT TEACH OTHERS ALSO, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue," (1 Cor. 14:18, 19). You will notice in the first place that Paul was only talking about teachin~ others, and not praising, praying, or singing in tongues. He used tongues in his private devotions, and said it would build up faith to sing, praise, or pray with tongues, (vs. 4 and 17). In verse 19 he was not referring to speaking with tongues with the interpretation. He said that would be equal to prophecy, (v. 5). But he is only speaking about, in verse 18, of TEACHING PEOPLE in tongues

21

without an interpreter. I know of no one today who does that way. How can a person who has never had the Spirit know that it is not a praise: All the verses from verse 6 to verse 1.i are dealing only with teaching people without an int orpretr-r. They key verse is: "If I come to you speaking to you with tongues," (verso 6). Verse 13 show s that Paul is talking about teaching people, and not about worshippinc, when 11(' tells him to pray that he mav interpret. Praise and prayer need no interpretation. (v. 2). Verse twenty-seven permits t h reo persons to speak something that needs to be intcrprotod. Each of tl1('111 can speak a message, using as many courses ill each message as necessary. In foreign countries a preacher preaches a message. stopping at the end of each course. permitting the interpretation. God sends spiritual I11('Ssages in courses also. In the same way Paul allows three prophets to speak in one service, (v. 29). According to the devil. verse twenty-eight reads: "If there be no interpreter. let him keep silence in the church." But the devil only quotes a part of the verse. If we stop there we could make no more noise; but the rest of the verse is: "and let him SPEAK to himself and to God." How do you address God in tongues? Verse two says in unknown tongues (1 Cor. 14:2). How do you address yourself in tongues? It is when you are singing in the Spirit. full of the Holy Ghost (Eph. 5:18, 19; 1 Cor. 14:15. 16). When you sing spiritual songs, or sing in the Spirit, no one can understand it. Reading all the verse without stopping you get the meaning. If there be no interpreter, be sure and don't teach the people in tongues, but sing, pray, or praise in tongues. That is just what they did in Acts 2, 8 and 19. All of them spoke without an interpreter (all at once), praising God. It is perfectly in order to do this. Of course the Holy Ghost is a perfect gentleman, and will not disturb a Spirit-inspired preacher's leadership.

22

GLANCE AGAIN We have seen that praising and praying edifies, or builds up one, and there is no restriction on it. Of course when we pray in tongues our understanding is unfruitful, (1 Cor. 14:14). That. is to our advantage"The Spirit helpeth our infirmities; for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered, and He ... maketh intercession for us according to the will of God," (Rom. 8:26, 27). That is the only time we know that everything is working together for good, (v. 28). When I was deep in sin, in grave danger, the Holy Ghost prayed through my mother, built up her faith (Jude 20), and brought me to God. If her understanding had been fruitful, or had she known the danger I was in, no doubt she would have worried herself out of faith. During the second World War after the Japs had taken Wake, Guam, and the Philippines, and were almost ready to take Midway, I awoke one night with the Spirit praying through me in tongues. I prayed for about two hours in the Spirit, until the victory came. My understanding was still unfruitful, until I saw a vision of my brother, and then I knew what I had accomplished in prayer. The Holy Ghost had brought the message faster than a cablegram, which I did receive later, stating that my brother and Midway Island was safe. That was the turning point of the whole war. Later he said that nine-tenths of his buddies got "bumped off" and he was spared. Another time the Holy Ghost prayed through me, when I did not know what the burden was for. I was kept from losing five thousand dollars and a whole family was saved. GREA TEST OF GIFTS First Corinthians 14:18, 19 shows that Paul did most of his speaking with tongues.in his private devotions. He must have spoken very much, to speak more than

23

that whole tongue-talking church. He was edified before he got to church. No wonder he was anointed to heal the sick, cast out devils, etc. No wonder he was anointed with the gifts. Some say that tongues edify one's self. That is true wh-n there is not an interpreter (1 Cor. 14:14). But how could Paul have edified the church unless he first was edified? In this sense the gift of tongues is the greatest gift instead of the least. Preachers, encourage your people to speak with tongues all their spare time at home. The more the better! Then when they get to church (v. 26) they will all be edified. Everything will be decent and in order, and they will be ready for the service. All things will be done to edifying, and each member will have the gifts. People will fall on their faces and report that God is in you of a truth. The secrets of their hearts will be revealed (v. 25). This will save many preachers from having a nervous break down, caused by pulling against the Spirit. The letter killeth, but the Spirit maketh alive. It is not by power or by might. but by the Spirit. You will live longer if you will pull with the Spirit, and not against it. When your vocabulary is exhausted: when it is joy unspeakable, when you know not what you should pray for, then it is that the Holy Spirit explains the petition to the Father, and worships Jesus with a more perfect language. When we run out of names for Jesus, the Holy Spirit has thousands of beautiful names and words, more than we can use throughout eternity. You need this Wonder-gift now'

They Laid Hands On Them

A backslidden preacher, bound by habits, in Fort Worth, came seeking the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. He would come into the prayer room, stay a few minutes, peep through his fingers, get up, sneak out and go home without anything. He would put all the blame on \1S by saying. "You should be able to lay hands on me and impart the Holy Ghost to me, as they did in Bible days." COMF:S THROUGH FAITH Receiving thr- Holy Ghost is like receiving other things from God, It must come through faith, as healing (Gal. 3:2). Some seem to think that if one has the gifts of healing, that he can heal all people, whether they have faith or not. Jesus only healed one man at the pool: that was after he had instructed him. and ,golten him willing to obey (John ~:1-91. In some places he could not do mighty works because of their unbelief. If divine healing were as some people think, a man with the gifts of healing, could go down the street and heal every person that he met, He could empty all the hospitals: we would have no further need for doctors and nurses. God does not work in that way. The Apostles and Jesus healed people ncar the Beautiful Gate [or years before one man got to the place that he "expected to receive something." and \\'(\S healed (Acts 3:;)). If a man had the PO\\'('}' to heal people, }'egardless of their faith and consecration, he would be g}'eater and more powerful than God, Naarnan thought that surely Elisha would lay hands on him and heal him: but no, he had to get the Naarnan nature out of him, and obey God, Even so Jesus demanded faith and obedience in every case where he healed, So did the Apostles,

DOES HOLY GHOST COME THAT WAY? We are not better than God. We are not better than Peter. When the temple is prepared the Holy Ghost will come in, (Mal. 3:1). Peter could have laid hands on Simon all day and he would not have received anything, although he believed and was baptized (evidently he believed with his mind). Why? Because his heart was not right in the sight of God. (Acts 8:13, 21). God looks at the motives of the heart. What do you want with the Holy Ghost? For what purpose do you intend to use Him? Do you intend to sell out completely and let Him use you, instead of you using the Holy Ghost? Stop and think! PREPARE YOUR HEART Read all the scriptures and references in this book. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God, (Rom. 10 :17). It comes like other things you get from God, through sincere faith. He that comes to the Lord MUST believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. When the temple is prepared the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple (Mal. 3:1). Make all these preparations and come expecting to receive something just as soon as hands are laid on you. Sometimes in our services where we lay on hands we come to one who has not made the right preparations. We see he does not have the glory on him, and we must wait until he prays awhile longer before we lay hands on him. "Lay hands suddenly on no man," (1 Tim. 5:22). In most cases when we feel led to lay hands on one to receive this experience, he receives instantly; but sometimes one does not completely yield for a few minutes after the Holy Ghost comes upon him. After you are anointed keep yielding for a few minutes and let God finish the work He has begun in you.

I Have the Holy Ghost

Some say, "Oh, yes, I have had the Holy Ghost for twenty years." But they have lost out in some way. Some preacher has told them they might get the Holy Ghost without tongues (which is impossible according to Acts 10:46, 47), or they have been afraid to let the Lord have His way, because of certain restrictions the preachers have put on the people. Others have yielded to temptations and have heen oppressed by the enemy. Remember that Jesus was tempted just after He received the Holy Ghost. YOU NEED A REFILLING

I do not believe in eternal security, or "once saved always saved." Neither do I believe in "once healed always healed." or "once got the Holy Ghost always got it." You need to be refilled. And every time you get refilled you will speak in tongues. Paul said, "I would that yo all spako with tongues" (1 Cor. ].:1:;-)). Just because a Christ ian docs not speak in tongues rcaularly is no sign he docs not have it. Jesus said that ovcrv one who docs 110t have his vessel FULL \\ hell He con1('S-OI' those who did have their vessels filled, and need a refilling-will be left behind when H(' comes. 111 that case you may have to have your head cut off to get there, (Rev. 6). In SOI11(, cluur-hos, where the people have 110t receivcd rcfillinus in ten and twcnt y years, I have preached that one should be "dilled, I found that when those people were refilled, God sent great revivals. It would create an atmosphere \\ here hundreds would come from different states and towns and get filled immediately, IF Because YOU J IA VE GIVEN reason UP some will give

up and will not claim they are living for God. They are discouraged. To them I want to say that the Holy Ghost is not completely gone. I am so glad that the Holy Ghost does not completely take His departure as soon as a person goes wrong. But that is no sign that he would be saved if he were to die. The Holy Ghost will li.iger for years sometimes WITH a backslider, condem Lin? and convicting him; for he has no other way to come back to God unless the Spirit reproves him. (John 16:8-11). If the Holy Spirit completely leaves him, he is gone forever, with no more chance, and nothing to give him a desire to pray. A person in this state generally goes into some false doctrine, receives a reprobate mind, receives seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, gets past feeling, has his conscience seared as with a hot iron, and is just like a natural brute beast. All do not die immediately after they sin against the Holy Ghost, or after He takes His departure, but mn nv do. If you have any desire, and feel His presence, then take courage, for you are the EASIER GROUP I have seen hundreds in this condition who have been refilled in one minute and less time. In many cases we have just touched them and they were refilled immediately, and spoke with a beautiful, clear language. When we command them to receive the Holy Ghost, some of them are afraid to yield to God, and to receive; for the devil, or wrong teaching, has caused them to think they will have to be punished a long time before they will receive. They seem to think it is too good to be true. They seem to have forgotten about the love and the grace of God. In a recent revival I went to a woman who had gone deep into sin after she had received the Baptism of the Spirit. I saw the Spirit on her while I was talking with her. "Do you love the Lord," I asked. She 'answered, "Yes, but He does not love me." That

28

is the condition many backslide-rs are in. They see III to think that God, the church, and everyone is against them. After I explained these things to her she was refilled in two minutes. In another revival I walked back and sa w the Holy Ghost power on a lady (and that is the reason many backsliders from the Holy Ghost will not come to church; God deals with them) and I knew she was not saved. I said, through the Spirit, "Lady, you used to have the Holy Ghost. Come now and you will be refilled in five minutes." She came believing, was refilled and made a good worker. I learned later that at the time she came back to God, she was a singer in a big night club. Such is God's grace! Many need deliverance. Friend, take courage! Surrender! Be refilled!

HUNDREDS RECEIVE HOI~Y GHOST BAPTISM AND m~ALING IN W. V. GRANT BLYTHEVILLE REVIVAL H. E. SIMMS, Pastor People have come for hundreds of miles to the revival here at Blytheville. Ark .. Assembly of Gael. conducted by Evangelist VI. V. Grant of Malvern. Then' have already heen four or five hundred counted who have received the Holy Ghost according to Acts 2:4. as well as hundreds refilled and revived. Brother Grant prayed for multitudes of people suffering from every common ailment. We relate below just a part of what God is doing for us because we got the people to praying. At this writing the revival is still going strong. BLINDNESS: Many were healed instantly. Some can read out of eyes which have been totally hlind. One man had a pitchfork stuck in one eye, putting it alit, and the other eye had drained away. The next night he testified he read the newspaper the first time in four years. DEAFNESS: Dozens of people have been healed of totally deaf ears. A brother's eardrum had been paralyzed 42 years, but he could hear a whisper after he was prayed for. After about a month he still can. BROKEN BONES: Many were healed of broken and dislocated bones. A contractor who moved houses was sitting under the house instructing his men. The house fell on him. His back and ribs were broken. He had gone in a brace for months. As soon as he was prayed for he raised his hands and said, "I'm as well as I ever was." He pulled his brace off the next day and brought it to us. (Ted Hollinger, Luxora, Ark.) EYES: Several pairs of glasses have been left at the church. Their owners don't need them anymore. GOIT ER.:3: Disappeared instantly. Some were visible.

After Some Receive the Holy Spirit's Baptism They are Afraid to Claim It
WRONG TEACHING I have seen some receive the Bible evidence of the Holy Ghost and begin to rejoice and praise God, but about that time someone would say something which caUSEd a doubt to hit them. It would take them weeks to shake loose from that influence. Many times after one begins to speak, you can hear some one near by say, "Lord, send the Holy Ghost." Another will ask, "Are you satisfied? Are you sure you have the real thing?" Another will preach, "You did not get a good case of it; you are not clear through; if you got it no one will have to tell you; you will certainly know it; when I got the real experience I went out; where a person goes 'clear through' he will go out and not know anything for hours." Another wilt say, "Lord, give him a plain language." Then the devil will say, "Be sure you are satisfied before you claim it; you have not become unconscious yet; don't be a hypocrit about it; tell people you have it, but are not satisfied with it; you know you must be sure: you have not received it like they received it." Supose I go down town, and tell everyone that I have a wife, but I am not satisfied with her. What would people think? How would my wife feel? LOOK FOR THE EVIDENCE receive a telegram telling me that I had an oil well, I would be happy if I knew it were real. If I did not: believe, or did not know what it was, would I be happy? You are happy AFTER you believe and accept and not before. Just as the devil tried to argue Jesus out of the Holy Ghost after he was baptized with the Spirit, so the devil will do the same thing to you, (Matt. 3 and 4). You are no better than
If I should

30

None of these things are till' evidence 01 the Holy Ghost. The way Jesus fought the devil after He received it was with "It is written." If you are standing on the Word, you arc on the rock. You will still stand when the storms of temptation and doubts come if vou build on the rock, which is the Word of God. The Bible vidence is Acts iO:46. If you have this evidence you know, even if you do not have some' of the manifestations others claim. Don't stop seeking until you speak in tongues, then what is the use of seeking any more? Just let Him have His way. If you are seeking for something that is already there' then you arc building doubts and confusion. Keep speaking until you get your freedom, but if you speak one word He is in there, or you would not be speaking. Expect it the Bible way, Then you are only a babe', You have just gotten your teacher. Start cro ing from there. We do not want you to be satisfied until you receive a refilling every day. Some are too oasilv satisfied. They retire. They should refire. When I awake in His likeness I shall be satisfied.

Conclusion
If you think I have gotten critical please remember that I was talking to the people who know the Hob Ghost is for them, and just will not seek it. If I am wrong about anything please tell me, If I am right tell others. Will you help me to pray that this book will come into the hands of many thousands of people who need this message, and that they will consider the spirit with which it was written? My humble prayer is that it will be a part in this world-wide revival, that is bringing Pentecost to all people,
