Deforestation happens in many ways: when trees are cut down to grow crops, for livestock, logging so wood can be used for building things like houses and furniture, for roads and neighborhoods, for firewood, and forest fires. Deforestation is affecting our environment and the way our earth appears. At least eighty percent of our forests have been destroyed. Our rain forests are disappearing. It has been estimated that in the last two years around 728 km of forest roughly half the size of Delhi- have been wiped out clear. Although there may be a need to cut down trees to some extent, humans and other species need to protect the forests and woodlands. Trees are not just beautiful; they also house many different kinds of plants and animals that could become extinct with deforestation. They also provide good things for humans and for the environment. Deforestation disrupts the carbon cycle. The forest trees take carbon dioxide as well as pollutants from the atmosphere. When the trees are destroyed or burned or left to rot, carbon is released into the air as C02 and methane. Methane and C02 contribute to the greenhouse effect. According to the World Rainforest Movement, twenty-five percent of our medicine comes from the forests. Deforestation affects our water, too. Trees take up water from their roots and then expel it into the air as moisture. This moisture then gets converted into clouds that will bring rain. If we have fewer trees, the atmosphere will be drier. With fewer trees, our soil does not have as much support and much silt is released into the waters, resulting in loss of soil and more flooding. And, what happens to the animals that make a home in our trees? Where do they go? To protect our forests and woodlands, the animals that live in them, the soil, the waters, the very air that we all breathe, and for all humanitys health and well-being, we must use paper products responsibly and sparingly; and without doubt we must make sure to recycle paper products. Try to imagine the earth without our trees, not just because of the things above, but also for the beauty of nature. Almost all of us have walked down a road with the sun beating ruthlessly down on us and wished silently that there were some trees along that road. There are so many things associated with trees that affect our senses as well, like the soothing sounds of the wind blowing through the leaves, the sound of the branches swaying in the wind and the ever so sweet chirping of the sparrows at dawn and dusk.

Seriously can we imagine a world without our trees? No, definitely not. So we must all join hands to prevent deforestation, each in our little way. The world did exist before the making of paper. A lot of things like paper kitchen towels, facial tissues can be avoided if only we are not so obsessed with the word disposable. So go for that which is reusable and recyclable instead. Our trees are our legacy given to us by our ancestors, its the legacy we must leave our own.

2)With increasing population, the need for forest products, such as, fuel, timber, bamboo grasses etc. increased dramatically for habitation. Hence deforestation becomes a permanent feature of our normal life. The single largest problem faced by the developing world for dwindling in their forest resources is deforestation. Causes of Deforestation: The main cause of the present day crisis is increasing population. Majority of people living in rural areas depend on forest for their firewood for cooking. Plant derivatives such as leaves; saw dust, charcoal etc. play an important role in providing domestic energy. Timbers, bamboos for thatched houses are main ingredients of rural areas. Bullock-carts and agricultural implements are still largely manufactured out of timber and poles: As our population is increasing in a geometric progression, the pressure of population brings more and more area under cultivable land, the total deforested area may gradually increase. Another area of utilization of forest products, such as bamboo, is in paper industries. For establishing big industries, refuge settlements, construction of railways, dams, mining etc. we clear up the jungle ruthlessly. The unplanned, unscientific and careless exploitation of forest resources bring immense miseries. Effects of Deforestation: Deforestation causes frequent floods. Every year about 30 million people and 10 million hectares are affected and the property lost may run into thousands of corers of rupees. The annual loss of top soil is estimated 6000 million tonnes; its value in terms of money is enormous. Soil erosion also causes siltation of lakes and rivers. Felling of trees and destruction of forests cause imbalance in forests ecosystem. That reflects in the loss of varieties of flora and fauna. Forest loss is a threat to wildlife survival. In Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and northeastern States about 50 per cent of family income in tribal areas comes from selling of forest minor products. Thus, the importance of forest to mankind is unimaginable. We must have good forest to cater to our various needs on a sustainable basis.

The following few points should well deserve to be mentioned. (i) Forests conserve soil, water and air. (ii) Forests are rich in medicinal plants. (iii) They offer biotic check for pests and diseases, (iv) Forests are rich sources of biodiversity and gene pools. (v) They serve as sanctuaries for wildlife. (vi) They prevent frequent floods and droughts. (vii) They induce rainfall. (viii) They provide fuel to millions and raw materials to industries. (ix) They generate employment and income. The list is endless. So the forests must be maintained properly and conservation approaches are adopted for upkeep of forests

Essay on The Effect of Deforestation to Human Lives

Deforestation is increasing as a global concern. In recent years deforestation has risen to dangerous levels. This reason is mainly due to the fact that most people have no idea what deforestation is. This lack of education has caused many changes in the global economy. The concerns no longer center on deforestation but in the effects it will have in our environment in the future. This issue has sparked national attention. It has caused a chain of recent plans and policies to be introduced. Also it has brought us together as a nation to fight a common problem. Deforestation is the clearing the land of forest or trees. Many people do not even know that this problem exists, although it may be occurring right in their own neighborhoods. The causes of deforestation are broad. It used to be thought that the lumber industry was much to blame, when in fact the industry is very low. Most of the land was used for various other reasons such as building and agricultural expansion. The land is used for growing crops and livestock grazing. In many cases the "Slash and Burn" method is used. This is where the farmers cut down and burn forests to get to the land that is feasible for farming. Most of the tropical soils are very poor in nutrients and can only support crops for a few years. When the soil has been exhausted it is either abandoned or turned over for livestock grazing. The effects of deforestation on the environment are numerous. The reduction of forests upsets the entire ecological cycle. The forests are home to a number of plants and animals. When a

forest is cut down, the whole cycle suffers. Most of all the forests act as a carbon "sink". That is they help to take in carbon, a green house gas, and offset its effect on the atmosphere. Also trees and plants on a forest can help to supply an alternative source of fossil fuels. Tree planting is also good for urban development. They help with heating and cooling costs to be lowered. There is evidence from the UN sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that came out in 1990. This organization records the change of climate control and has the best of these fields working for it. It predicted that if our economy keeps releasing emissions as we are that our annual temperature would increase at 0.3 degrees per decade over the next century. "This is beyond what the earth has experienced over the past 10,000 years" (Muller Introduction). We currently are increasing at a rate of 0.5 percent per year.

Deforestation - Definition and meaning

What is deforestation? The most simple definition would be cutting down trees in forests and rainforests so this is really a form of forest destruction that is usually done by logging and/or burning of trees. Why are people clearing so many forests and rainforests around the globe? The biggest factors that contribute to deforestation are farms and cattle pasture. In many countries of the developing world population is growing, and as the population grows people need more and more room to expand so many forests are cleared out, and on once forested areas now are mostly farms and savannas. The biggest reason for concern are old tropical rainforests that are disappearing really fast. These ancient forests absorb large quantities of CO2 which not only regulates climate but also helps in slowing the global warming impact. Rainforests and forests are not only important because of their role in climate they are also areas of extremely rich biodiversity with lots of unique plants and animals that need forests to survive. Deforestation is also giving significant impact to climate change problem. The more forests disappear the less carbon emissions they sink but what is even worse is often use of slash and burn techniques. By using slash and burn techniques we are constantly releasing huge CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Industry and cars are not alone as leading causes of global warming, one major factor is also deforestation. One study showed that in just 24 hours time

deforestation will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere as 8 million people flying from London to New York.

Deforestation has reached an alarming rate in many countries around the world but three areas hit the most by deforestation are Amazon rainforest, Africa, and Indonesia. In these three areas condition is really no longer alarming, it is really already in critical zone. Deforestation is really one of the biggest environmental evils that happen on this planet, and if current trend continues with somewhere around 16 million hectares of forests disappearing each year, our planet will head into a real environmental disaster in years to come. About half of the forests that once covered the earth are already gone, and we are definitely not doing enough to protect the ones that remain. Our forests and rainforests mean so much to us but most people still do not understand how important forests really are. What we definitely need is some very quick solution to stop deforestation. Will this solution turn out to be forest funding, or something else it really doesn't really matter. As long the forests are saved.
