COURSE SYNOPSIS The course exposes students to the fundamentals of primary mathematics teaching. To ground the fundamentals in a meaningful context, it starts by looking at the development of primary mathematics curriculum in Malaysia. It then examines the history of mathematics, the aims and strategies of teaching mathematics in primary schools, critically analyses the Integrated Primary School Curriculum for Mathematics (IPSCM), and looks at the philosophy underpinning them. Selected topics covered in the IPSCM are also discussed. Students are also guided on how to develop the various components of a lesson and subsequently write effective, pedagogically-informed lesson plans on some selected mathematics topics. They are then required to teach and reflect on the lessons taught, taking into account the diverse school context in which the lessons will actually be conducted. The course seeks to strengthen the judgment of students in making pedagogical decisions and is geared towards preparing students to become an effective and reflective primary mathematics teacher.
