Study Of Cost-effective Rural Housing Technologies

ABSTRACT
Right from the ancient times, our building technologies were based on the locally

available materials in different regions. The basic types of materials available mainly were of mud, stone and bamboo . The mud and stone were of varied types and they were used wisely in different ways and for purposes, taking their characteristics into consideration. The mud was mostly used for wailing, stone for roofing, roof slabs and bamboo for vertical columns, beams etc. There were many other materials such as lime, wood ,iron products, glass etc. evolved with time and became a part of the construction technology. The modern techniques in construction technology did wonders by offering us multistoried highrise buildings and other construction of enormous, unimaginable sizes. This was possible only with the usage of new trendy materials like combination of cement, steel, aluminum etc. But they being energy intensive products i.e. from non-renewable energy sources, the prices slowly escalated and they still are on rise constantly. The result is that housing has become a luxurious, unaffordable commodity and leave aside the poor, but even the middle class population is finding it difficult to be able to make a home of their own. On the other hand, it also became one of the reasons causing ecological imbalance leading to environmental devastation. The research and development now has taken a different turn to find out an affordable solution for cost-effective construction, which gives suitable options to all those in villages and towns to have a shelter of their own. This process involves rediscovering our local materials and traditional technologies and blending them with the materials and modern technologies, to have an appropriate design and plan for strong, good quality and cost effective housing. The traditional materials like mud, stone and bamboo, the techniques of their usage and their new combinations are used in cost-effective rural housing.

Steps Involved in Design of cost-effective houses :

Literature survey 2weeks Study of different types of houses -1week Finalization of particular house - 3weeks Design of mud, stone & brick houses - 1week preperation of drawing - 1week seminar presentation - 1week

conclusion - 1week Documentation - 2weeks REPORT:

The house will be constructed in low cost within a short span of time using our local materials and traditional technologies having an appropriate design and plan without compromising in strength, quality and life of house.
