he young child meets the world with a tireless motor exploring life through the channels of the senses. Visual, aural and tactile learning are all part of the creative process at CSMA. Preschool children awaken their creative senses through play-based, hands-on learning. With a curriculum meeting top national standards, classes provide key social and developmental stimuli to help your child nurture his or her natural, inner creativity. our teachers are professional educators who take joy in setting the stage for a lifelong love of learning. This is an experience that you and your preschooler should not miss!
parent/caregiver & child must attend all classes together (unless otherwise indicated). TUITION: includes $10 (per class) non-refundable registration fee. DISCoUNT: A 10% discount will be applied to the lesser tuition for additional family members, additional classes and/or multiple instruments. MAX: 10 children per class (unless otherwise noted). In consideration of all enrollees, no unregistered siblings over the age of 6 months are permitted to attend.

mary ellen pense
In my past 25 years as a music educator, I have worked with both preschool & school-aged children. My philosophy is learning through play. Nursery rhymes, singing games, folk songs & movement are the perfect way to teach concepts & motivate learners. Both my orff-Schulwerk training & Kodaly Association membership support this approach.
My background includes classes in Kodaly singing, Kindermusik & Musikgarten. I have a Master of Music degree with a classical music emphasis & a vast knowledge of American folk music. I like to incorporate all of these styles in my classes, building skills through listening, singing, movement & rhythmic games.
Daniel Garcia
I have worked many years as an early childhood educator & incorporate music into my daily curriculum with children in the classroom. My educational background allows me to bring a unique teaching style to my classes, incorporating singing with guitar, musical games, movement & exploration of rhythm instruments.
Christina Stein
I have a background in music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I have taught music & movement to young children for several years, & also have a thorough knowledge of brass instruments & music theory. I enjoy exposing young children to the joys of music making!
Chaia may
I have been teaching music & movement classes for the last 25 years throughout the Bay Area. My background includes training as a teacher in Music Together, Baby Suzuki, orffShulwerk, voice, multiple dance forms, & coursework in early childhood development.
mirna Saab
I believe the natural instinct for music must be nurtured through play that awakens joy in a childs life. My classes incorporate voice, guitar, movement, nature, a passion for foreign languages & explorations of world rhythms. My background includes early childhood music training, theater, dance, foreign languages & Reggio Emilia workshops. I have had more than 10 years of experience working with young children in music. 5

My background includes working with children in both music & art. I studied art at the University of Maine & music at the New England Conservatory of Music. I have participated in the PACT Art Focus programs in the Mountain View school district, & art programs at the McAuliffe School in Cupertino. I have taught art classes at CSMA for more than three years. I enjoy teaching art to preschool children & bringing out their creativity by combining the sensory experience of sight, sound & touch.
lena Boot
My passion is working with preschool-age children, giving them opportunities to be creative in art. In the style of Reggio Emelia, I provide a creative art environment that gives children the opportunity to observe, inquire, explore & use fine motor & cognitive skills. Art provides them with an awareness of themselves & their surroundings.
lisette lugo
I encourage creativity & hands-on projects that give children choices. I have a degree from Academy of Art in San Francisco & training in early childhood education with an art focus. My love for teaching art has taken me from preschool to retirement communities, teaching ages 2 to 102, using art as therapy & teaching those with disabilities. Art is my passion.

I have taught art classes for preschool & school age children at CSMA for several years. I have a BFA in Graphic Design from Springfield, Missouri & have spent time working with ceramic & porcelain restoration. I enjoy working with children in art & watching their creativity process unfold.

I received my masters degree in Education/Creative Arts in Learning from Lesley University in Cambridge Mass. I have spent many years teaching art to preschoolers & I love doing exploratory projects with children. 7

elcome to the Music School at the Community School of Music and Arts! We have been providing private and group music instruction in Silicon Valley for over 40 years. At CSMA students of all ages, abilities and levels develop skills and a love of music through private lessons. Private music lessons (offered year-round) include instruction in classical, contemporary, jazz and popular styles for students of all ages. CSMA has a large, multi-lingual faculty of more than 100 professional musicians and educators, including a category of instructors designated as Distinguished Teachers in recognition of their extraordinary professional experience. CSMA hosts and prepares students for the practical and theory examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), an international organization that operates music examinations in over 90 countries every year and is the worlds leading provider of graded music exams & assessments. Faculty select students for whom the ABRSM curriculum and performance challenge provide appropriate motivation and reward. over 350 students from throughout Silicon Valley come to CSMA twice a year to perform for the ABRSM examiner who travels from London. CSMA offers students a comprehensive curriculum in preparation for exams. This includes private lessons & theory & aural training classes. Many of our faculty provide instruction in preparation for the ABRSM Practical Examination. This includes piece preparation, scales, sight reading & aural training. Select faculty also prepare students for the ABRSM Diploma levels. Last year, of the 100+ CSMA students who took either the ABRSM Practical (includes performance and aural training) or Theory Exams, 100% passed. The world-wide exam pass rate is approximately 87%. Most CSMA students taking the exams annually pass with Distinction or Merit Distinction.

Student recitals at CSMA are given at the end of each semester and provide an invaluable opportunity for students to give a formal presentation and to gain confidence in front of an audience of family and friends. Merit Scholarships are awarded to students (grade school through high school) who have shown a high level of commitment, talent and achievement in their CSMA studies and who are ready to develop the additional skills necessary to become high-level performers, including: Training in stage presence and etiquette Working and performing as soloists and in ensembles with other Merit Scholars Learning how to rehearse effectively Building a performance portfolio These skills are built through ensemble coaching sessions with CSMA faculty, special workshops for Merit Scholars and, most importantly, performances at high-profile events, both on- and off-site. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship, students must be nominated by a faculty member. Students only become eligible for nomination after one year of continuous CSMA private lessons (or 18 months, if absent during summer). Each year, CSMA awards approximately 50 Merit Scholarships, with competitive auditions before a panel of judges held annually in the spring. Merit Scholarship students and their families are regarded as the ambassadors of the CSMA Music School and are role models for all of our music students and their families. See pg 2 for a list of Merit Scholar Student Recitals.

CSMA regularly enrolls & prepares students for ABRSM exams, the worlds leading provider of graded music exams & assessments. Many of our faculty use the ABRSM curriculum & we host ABRSM music examinations twice a year in our concert hall. Students are judged by an examiner from the London ABRSM office, receive comments, scores & a certificate. CSMA offers students a comprehensive curriculum in preparation for exams. This includes private lessons & theory & aural training classes.

Many of our faculty provide instruction in preparation for the ABRSM Practical Examination. This includes piece preparation, scales, sight reading & aural training. Select faculty also prepare students for the ABRSM Diploma levels.

CSMA offers Core Curriculum classes in the ABRSM theory curriculum from Gr 1-8. CSMA private lesson students receive one Core Curriculum class free per semester (except summer). Core Curriculum classes are open to enrollment by other students at the tuition prices listed. CSMA has a high success rate in preparing students for all levels of theory exams. Classes also include aural training in Gr 1-5, which helps students with exam aural requirements.

CSMA offers additional aural training classes in preparation for the Gr 6, 7 & 8 ABRSM Practical Exams. SMAs Camp Program provides children the opportunity to express, explore, create and enjoy the arts in a relaxing, safe and fun environment. our faculty of professional artists, musicians and arts educators creates a stimulating, nurturing experience for young artists to share the joy of making art, music and new friends. With more than 75 camps offered every year, the program provides a diversity of choices designed to expose your child to the rich multi-cultural, multi-faceted world of the arts. A low teacherstudent ratio ensures individualized attention.
Projects provide the opportunity for campers to work on their own and on collaborative projects. End-of-camp exhibitions and performances provide young artists the chance to share with family and friends and to showcase their creations. CSMAs year-round camp program offers sessions during school vacations (Dec, Feb, Apr) and throughout the summer (June-Aug). Flexible enrollment options (half- and full-day) allow you to create a schedule that meets your childs needs and is convenient for your family.

Class/Camp/Workshop Refund Policy

Transfers Students may apply for one class transfer per semester. Transfer requests must be made in writing (Request for Class Transfer form available on our website at: www.arts4all.org/register/forms and in the CSMA student services office). No transfers or refunds will be approved unless the following conditions are met: All requests must be received no later than three business days after the second class. Requests are subject to space availability and class coordinator approval. Cancellations Programs must meet minimum enrollment requirements as determined by CSMA. Full tuition refunds or credits are given if CSMA cancels a program. Withdrawals Upon receipt of a Request for Withdrawal Form (available on web site and in main office), prior to the first class/camp/workshop, Student Services Staff will determine your eligibility for refunds or credits as follows: At least 2 weeks prior to first class/camp/workshop: Full tuition refund less $10 non-refundable registration fee PLUS $10 processing fee per class/ camp/workshop. 2 weeks before through 24 hours prior to start of class/camp/workshop: 50% tuition credit less $10 non-refundable registration fee PLUS $10 processing fee per class/camp/workshop. (Credit valid up to 1 year from date of receipt of Request for Withdrawal Form.) Day of and after first class/camp/workshop: No refunds or credits are given.
Registration Deadline
Because many classes, camps and workshops fill up quickly, we strongly encourage students to enroll at least two weeks prior to starting date. After first class/ camp, enrollments are accepted on a space-available basis only and are also subject to instructor/program director approval. Tuition can be pro-rated for late enrollments approved after first class.

Payment Information
CSMA charges a non-refundable registration fee of $10 per class/camp/workshop*, which is already included in the tuition cost. Students register for a full semester and payment in full is required at the time of registration. (*does NOT apply to one- and two-day workshops)
Confirmation
We email registration confirmations. If you have not received confirmation two weeks prior to start date, contact the Student Services office.
Discounts
Family/multiple Classes/multiple instrument discounts A 10% discount will be applied to the lesser tuition for additional family members, additional classes and/or multiple instruments. Senior discount - Students 55 and older will receive 15% discount with proof of age. noTe - only one type of discount per registration will be applied.
Wait List Policy

Registrations are processed in the order received. In some cases, students may be waitlisted due to enrollment limits. There is no charge for this service. Your online shopping cart will indicate if a class is waitlisted; staff will individually contact students using other registration methods. You will only be contacted again should a space become available and NoT if the class remains at the maximum enrollment limit.

Photo & Video Release Policy
Absences
A make-up is scheduled if the missed session is due to teacher absence. Missed classes/camps/workshops due to student absence are not made up.
From time to time CSMA takes photographs and tapes video of students and/or artwork for possible use in our publications (print & e-mail), exhibitions, on our website and social media sites, and for funding, development and public relations purposes. No compensation is provided to individuals who appear in the photographs or video or for artwork used.
Non-Discrimination Policy
Leaves of Absence
In cases of emergency or serious illness, a leave of absence may be requested. All requests must be accompanied by a doctors note and made in writing to the Student Services Staff. If approved, credit may be given for those absences.

Financial Aid Program

In keeping with our commitment to Arts for All, CSMA offers tuition assistance, scholarships and/ or work-study to qualified students. After-School Programs
CSMA offers weekly after-school art clubs and music instruction at elementary schools. Programs give children the opportunity to create art and music in the familiar surrounding of their own school, providing parents with a convenient and enriching environment for their children when the school day ends.
Music for Special occasions

Celebrate a birthday, wedding, business milestone or other special event by having our talented faculty artists provide music. Performances & Exhibitions

Faculty and students provide free concerts and exhibitions at libraries, senior centers, hospitals, fairs and other venues throughout the year. These off-site programs are another way that CSMA strengthens its bonds with the community and ensures Arts for All!

Special Needs Program

As part of CSMAs commitment to Arts for All, we have provided classes at Finn Center to students from Abilities United, Morgan Autism Center, Pacific Autism Center for Education (PACE) and AchieveKids. Taught by our professional faculty, weekly classes provide hands-on experiences in a supportive environment to meet the special needs of these students.

Bringing arts education to almost 11,000 children annually in over 600 classrooms!
SMA serves more than 10,660 children (Gr K-8) annually through its Art4Schools and Music4Schools programs. Instruction by CSMAs professional arts educators develops students cultural understanding, stimulates their critical thinking, and encourages curiosity and creativity. our curriculum is aligned with the California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) state standards. Weekly, sequential, skill-based classes and concerts at more than 30 schools in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties coordinate with school curriculum to ensure that the arts are an integral, enriching part of a childs education. Programs are made possible by the support of school districts, individual schools, parent organizations, and community and government resources.

or a petite skinny-legged girl, growing up old school meant children were to be seen, not heard. Positive reinforcement was not a parenting strategy. When your parent or teacher remarked that you were special, it was not a compliment. And, a child did what was expected and directed by adults. No questions asked. None. Then, that little girl began piano lessons at the community music schooland drawing classand voice lessonsand musical theatre in her high school. She entered a world where thoughtful reflection, discipline and emotional vulnerability were prized. Where curiosity was encouraged and questions in the pursuit of excellence required. Trial and error and improvisation, often in front of strangers, a seminal part of learning. That little girls voice made her special and her teachers told her this without the usual, dripping hallmark New Jersey sarcasm. In a world where life was very prescribed, a world of possibility opened, culminating in multiple degrees and decades of commitment as an arts advocate. That skinny-legged little girl was me. At CSMA, we open a world of possibility for every student. For the more than 15,000 students from ages 18 months to 90 years old in our elegant award-winning Finn Center and in over 30 public, private and charter schools across our region: Silicon Valley. our exceptional faculty and staff are committed to helping you to open the door of possibility in yourself through art and music. For those whom financial circumstances prevent this opportunity, financial aid through scholarships and subsidies to our arts education in the schools alleviate this obstacle. For Sala, our teenaged Kiri Te Kanawa with the shimmering voice, a scholarship made it possible for her study at CSMA. Generous support made it possible for 600 Lyndale Elementary School students in East San Jose to study art, which helped to improve their academic performance and test scores in language arts and math. Each year, significant funds are allocated as scholarships for students who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to their studies as well as those for whom the cost of lessons and classes is an impediment. The Larson Society, honoring Robert and Sue Larson, is a scholarship fund created to ensure that CSMA can continue to provide this help in the coming years to those who need it most. Gifts to the Larson Society support the creativity and talent of Silicon Valleys future, our young people.
