--- Functions

A function is a relationship between an independent and a dependent variable. The indpedendent variable is often called the input, while the dependent is the output.

y = x+2
Output Input The answer for y will always depend on what the value of x is. In this example, y will always be 2 greater than x. A real-life example of a function relationship could be the money earned by somebody for the time spent working any job. If a customer service agent gets paid $8.00 per hour, you could use an equation to model their earnings. If E = Earnings and H = Number of Hours Worked, then :

E = $8 x H
The figure to the right illustrates the function above for the amount of earnings at a job that pays $8 per hour. Notice that this graph passes the vertical-line test for functions (see pg. 258 in text book ). If you draw a vertical line anywhere on the graph, it can not pass through more than one point. If it does, it is no longer a function. Each number value for the independent variable (in this case, hours worked), can have one and only one associated value for the dependent variable (in this case, earnings).

or, "earnings equals 8 dollars times the number of hours worked"

$88 $80 $72 $64 $56 $48 $40 $32 $24 $16 $8 $0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Hours Worked (H) 8 9 10

Pre-Lab Activity 1. Draw the following points on the graph above [Hint: (H,E ) ]:

Earnings (E)

(2,40) (3,64)

2. After drawing the 2 additional points, Is this graph still a function? Explain why or why not.

3. Why might it be a problem to have more than one earnings amount associated with the same number of hours worked?

4. Use the Data Table to the right. a) Predict: Do you expect this set of data to be function? Yes or no? b) Draw a new line using this data on the graph above. Ignoring everything else on the graph except for these new points, is this new line a function? Describe or make up a real-life situation where this could happen, in terms of hours worked and earnings.

H 2 3 4 5 6

E $80 $80 $80 $80 $80

Algebra 1 : Semester 1

Maria and Juan work weekdays selling cell phones at the mall. Use the Table and Graph below for the following questions.
12 10 8 6 4
Maria

Number of Phones Sold Maria Juan Monday 5 8 Tuesday 7 4 Wednesday 6 2 Thursday 8 6 Friday 10 7

Number of Phones Sold

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Day of the Week Friday

5. Maria's sales have already been graphed. Graph Juan's sales onto this same graph and connect them with a line. Label this line in the key to right, just as Maria's sales have been labeled 6. Which variable, phones sold or days of the week, is the input? 7. Who has better sales (in general)? 8. Which day appears to be the best day for sales at their cell phone store? The worst day?
