DETERMINATION KEY OF PLANT

I. PURPOSE To identify plant using determination key II. BASIC THEORY There are millions of species on our planet. It would be difficult if we just tried to describe and name each one individually. Although species can be very different from each other, many of them have similar features that allow us to put them into groups. In the eighteenth century Carl Linnaeus started the modern system of putting species of organism into certain groups and giving them scientific names. Each species is given a name using Latin words, so that the same name can be used all over the world. For example, the scientific name for human beings is 'homo sapiens'. Putting different species into different groups according to their features is called classification. Objective and benefit of classification : 1. To describe and differentiate the characteristic of each species 2. Classify living things according to the similarity of characteristic 3. Classification can be used to see the relationship among living things to one another 4. Classification allow us to study diverse organisms To classify organism we can use some ways. One of the way is using a Determination key. Determination key is the way to identify and classify living organisms on the taxon. Determination key containing descriptions of the organisms that are presented with the opposite character. Determination key consists of a series of statements that consists of two lines with opposite characteristics. III. SOURCE AND INSTRUMENT Mimosa pudica IV. PROCEDURE

1. Prepare the material 2. Observe all body part of the plant 3. Indentify the plant using determination key, choose statement a or b on each number of
determination key that suitable with the characteristic of the plant. If there isnt suitable statement, you do not need to choose statement on that number V. RESULT OF OBSERVATION

From the experiment we know that Mimosa pudica included : 1b. Plant that already have a vascular tissue (Sub Kingdom Tracheophyta)................... ..... 3 3b. Flowering plants or have a tool that functions like flower and produce seed (Divisio Spermatophyta)..................................................................................................................... 7 5b. Doesnt have curl young leaves........................................................................................ 6 7a. Seeds are protected by the leaves of fruit (Sub Divisio Angiospermae)........................ 10 10a. Sprouts / Seeds have two cotyledons / Splitting (Classes Dicotyledonae)................... 11 12a. Has compound leaves..................................................................................................... 13 14a. Has compound leaves that consist of 4 stalks or more that arranged pinnatly leaf or palmately leaf with a lot of child leaves that can open or closed, the flower without corolla (Family Mimosaceae)

1b. Already have a vascular tissue

3a. Unflowering plant

5a. Have curl young leaves 10a. Have two cotyledons 5b. Doesnt have curl young leaves 7a. Closed seed plant 10b. Have one cotyledon 7b. Opened seed plant

12a. Has compound leaves

14a. Compund leaves that consist of 4 stalks or more

3b. Flowering plant

14b. Another compound leaves 12b. Doesnt have compound leaves

VI.

CONCLUSION From the determination key, we can conclude that Mimosa pudica included: Kingdom : Plantae

Subkingdom : Tracheophyta Divisio : Spermatophyta

Sub Divisio : Angiospermae Classis Family : Dicotyledon : Mimosaceae (The stink beans tribe)
