We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit ourselves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all. Notes from the Pastor: Back to normal routine! After all the celebrations, we are now focused on our journey through 2013! Many of you must have set your personal goals this year. For Saint Michael Church, the goal I have set which I am asking all of you to support is to be able to plan and execute a year of celebration for the Parishs 50th Anniversary of its construction. Some might ask why celebrate a buildings construction anniversary? The establishment of the parish maybe celebrated but a building? The answer to this question would help us to go deeper on our understanding of the Church as the Body of Christ. This is best explained by Dr. Marcellino DAmbrosio in his article on the feast of the dedication of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome: As a rebellious teenager, I thought the Catholic church should stop wasting its money on expensive churches. We ought to sell them all and buy food for the poor, I argued. Funny thing. Jesus, who cared much for the poor, did not have this attitude. As an adolescent he yearned to spend time in Herods sumptuous Temple (Luke 2). As an adult, he defended its integrity against the moneychangers (John 2). Francis of Assisi, who gave away all his possessions, begged for money to buy materials to restore ruined churches which he rebuilt with his own hands. Why this high regard for church buildings? Ezekiel 47 gives us one important reason. Because the liturgical worship that goes on inside, most especially the Eucharist, is the source and summit of our entire Christian life. The world is a dusty, tiring place that often beats us down. The Church building is a haven, a quiet refuge, a place to encounter God. Here we drink deeply of the life-giving waters of word and sacrament that revive our drooping spirits (Psalm 23). The grace that flows from the altar bears us back into the world, changed, and able to change others, bringing healing and bearing fruit. Saint Paul, in I Corinthians 3, gives us another reason to honor ChurchesThe Church building is a mirror that, held up before us, reminds us of who we are. The world tells us that we are consumers, employees and voters, and flashes a constant stream of icons at us every day to remind us of this. The Church building is an icon that reminds us of our deepest identity. As we gather for Sunday worship, we who were scattered by diverse loyalties , Next Sunday(01/20/2013) 10:00 AM E. Wilson, G. professions, and life-styles, are now united as the Body of Christ and dwelling place of the Spirit. How does a person enter the Church? Through the cleansing waters of baptism. Maybe thats why there are holy water fonts at the doors of most Catholic churches. Maybe those statues of saints are there to remind us that we are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the family of God (Ephesians 2:19f). So what about all the expensive treasures of architecture, painting, sculpture, and stained glass? Sell them all and use the proceeds to buy food for the poor? What then would the poor have?... The loss of ones home is a loss of ones dignity. Our churches, from the local chapel to St. Peters Basilica, belong not to the hierarchy, but to the whole family. Theyve been given to us by the hard work and contributions of our forebears to remind us of our dignity as sons and daughters of the living God let us allow zeal for God's house to consume us as it did Jesus and Francis, that we may embrace the task of purification, renewal and rebuilding... May these words enkindle our spirit to give value to the 50th anniversary celebration of the construction of Saint Michael Church in 2014! We welcome Quin Michael Dean Sisney to our Catholic Family who was born in baptism this Sunday, January 13 th! He is the son of Michael and Melissa Sisney. May God bless him, his family, and our catholic community always! And God bless you all! Fr. Roger

St. Anthony: The Father of Monastic Life Anthony was born in 251 in Egypt of wealthy Christian parents. He was $83,985.71 noted for his even temperament, his devotion to the Church, and obedience to $825.28 his parents. Six months after coming into possession of a large fortune $85,074.64 through the death of his parents, he was assisting at Mass when he heard the words of Jesus read: Go, sell what you have and give it to the poor, and you ($263.65) will have treasure in heaven. He felt the words were directed to him and he acted upon them. He gave away his possessions and begged an old hermit to teach him the spiritual life. Afterwards, he retired into the desert and lived the life of a hermit for many years, devoting himself to prayer and penance. Christs Baptism Led to the Cross Ever since Christmas, weve been celebrating several manifestations of Christ. On December 25, He showed Himself to the Jewish world, symbolized by the shepherds. The next Sunday was the Feast of the Holy Family, which gives us the account when Mary and Joseph find Him in the Temple and He reveals to them that He is the Son of His eternal Father. Last weekend, we observed His manifestation to all the nations in the person of the wise men, known as the Epiphany. And now, to another important event in the life of Our Lord--His Baptism--when for the first time in history, ALL THREE PERSONS of the Trinity revealed themselves in an outward way: Jesus, the Fathers voice, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Jesus baptism is so significant that it is described in all four of the Gospels. Just as our baptism brought us into Gods family, the Church, so Christs baptism launched Him into His role as Suffering Servant. You might say, His baptism in the Jordan led to the Cross. Recall the words of the Father, You are my Beloved Son. On you, my favor rests. This is a paraphrasing of the opening words of the first of the Servant Songs in todays readings of Isaiah. Jesus rose up out of the Jordan just as one day He would rise triumphant from the tomb! Christ came into the world to bring us the life and light that we receive in baptism. In our baptism, were empowered by the Holy Spirit to bear fruit that will last. Its truly a great privilege to own a divine membership in the Body of Christ! Lets remember that were included in the Prayers of the Church wherever and whenever Mass is said, while also in constant Union with the Whole Church (meaning Heaven, Earth, and Purgatory). As had been announced by the Catholic Advance, Msgr. William Carr, who has written The Word of the Lord on p. 2 of each issue to prepare us for Sunday Mass, is retiring after many years. Fr. Tom Hoisington has taken over this column and has written thought-provoking statements on the Baptism of the Lord. I close with his words, We might say that the Baptism of the Lord is a foreshadowing of Pentecost. As the Holy Spirit descended upon Christ at His Baptism, so the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles at Pentecost. As Jesus baptism was the start of His public ministry, so Pentecost was the beginning of the Churchs life. Articles by Marcel Normand
