GATE 2013 ME Analysis

Area wise Analysis
Engineering Mathematics Questions were of medium difficulty. As expected, most of the questions were based on Calculus and Basic Engg. Mathematics, most of which is covered in Class 12. The question on checking linear dependency of functions has again emphasized that focus of GATE is on clear understanding of basics than on formula based questions. Fluids and Thermal engineering Questions from fluid mechanics were of medium difficulty. Most of the questions from fluid mechanics were concept based. A surprising 10 marks from heat transfer is a real change compared to previous 3 years. With a tough Common data question from this area, heat transfer is one of the tough areas to score in this paper. Questions from Thermodynamics and Applied areas were lower in number compared to previous years. Except for a question on availability and psychrometry most of the questions were direct formula and calculation based questions. With 26 marks from this area, it becomes the focus point for the paper. Applied Mechanics and design Generally considered to be a scoring area, this had a few surprises in store this time. Another surprise is the absence of a 2 marks question from Strength of Materials. This makes the paper an interesting one compared to last year which was one of the easier GATE papers in recent times. Theory of machines was the easiest of design questions with many questions being similar to previous questions of GATE. A common data question on rivets and a formula based question on fatigue makes design a mixed bag. Questions from vibrations were difficult. A very thorough understanding of the concepts in this area is the only way to score well in this section. Manufacturing and Industrial engineering This section is the easiest part of core Mechanical Engineering with no real surprises except for a question on thread measurement. Manufacturing questions were mainly focused on Metal cutting, which is the easiest chapter. Questions from Manufacturing and Metrology had tricky options. A real surprise is the Industrial Engineering. This area has had almost a 10-15 mark share in recent papers. With just 4 marks from this region, this paper is similar to question papers before 2010. General Aptitude This section had no real surprises. Verbal ability was easier compared to the previous years. Quantitative ability also was a tad easier compared to previous years. There were questions on Probability, TSD etc. Scoring 10+ out of 15 in this section should be very easy.

Final Analysis
This is a traditional GATE paper with a few surprises. But at the same time students with a thorough understanding of basics can do well. This is a slightly tougher paper compared to 2011 and 2012. So, the scores would be comparatively lower. Given below is a prediction of the rank a student can expect based on his/her score.
