Shawnee High Schools theatre
club will be presenting the musi-
cal version of the 1984 movie
Footloose.
According to GuidetoMusi-
calTheatre.com, when Ren Mc-
Cormack and his mother move
from Chicago to a small farming
town, Ren is prepared for the ad-
justment to his new high school.
What he isn't prepared for are the
local laws, including a ban on
dancing, which are the brainchild
of a local preacher bent on exer-
cising control over the town's
youths. When the reverend's re-
bellious daughter sets her heart
on Ren, her boyfriend tries to sab-
otage Ren's reputation and many
of the locals are eager to believe
the worst about the new kid.
The preachers ban on dancing
followed the death of four high
school students killed in a car ac-
cident after leaving a school
dance.

A Medford resident was recent-
ly arrested for operating a moon-
shine distillery out of his resi-
dence, according to police.
Moonshine distilleries are
rarely heard of or discovered in
South Jersey. The case is compa-
rable to the Discovery Channel
show Moonshiners.
The case was the first of its
kind for Medfords Chief of Po-
lice Richard Meder.
According to Meder, the inves-
tigation began in December in
Red Oak Trail residential area fol-
lowing a tip to police.
After approximately three
weeks of investigation, the Med-
ford Township Police executed a
search warrant at the suspected
residence.
He had a still on location. It
was not functioning at the time,
said Meder.
Police seized the still.
In addition, police removed two
shotguns, one rifle, one muzzle
loader, one rifle pellet gun, one
pellet handgun, two handguns,
one of which had a defaced serial
number, and an assortment of
fireworks during the search of
the premises, according to the re-
port.
Additionally, over 3.5 ounces of
marijuana, a digital scale, assort-
ed smoking pipes and a set of
throwing stars were removed dur-
ing the investigation.
The suspect was charged with
multiple offenses including un-
lawful possession of handguns,
unlawful possession of rifles, un-
lawful possession of shotguns,
unlawful possession of throwing
stars, possession of a defaced
firearm, possession of weapons
by certain persons, possession of
marijuana, possession with in-
tent to distribute marijuana, pos-
session of firearms while com-
mitting a CDS offense, possession
of an unregistered still and pos-
session of CDS paraphernalia,
the report said.
Police did not release any fur-
ther details pertaining to the case.
The suspect posted $54,300 bail
and was released pending a
Burlington County Superior
Court hearing.

Residents posting misinforma-
tion on the Medford Township
Facebook page have prevented
township manager Chris Schultz
from working on the budget, offi-
cials said.
Schultz addressed his frustra-
tion during the Feb. 5 township
council meeting.
Mayor Frank Czekay checked
the various social media sites run
by the township and noticed the
problem.
I happened to find comments
about trash implementation and
leaf collection for the township.
Quite frankly, I was shocked by
the comments because they were
not put out there as opinion, they
were put out there as fact, said
Czekay.
The comments stemmed from
trash pickup, which was recently
changed.
One resident claimed the trash
trucks were too big to move freely
in neighborhoods or pick up the
old style round trashcans, forc-
ing the collectors to pick up cans
by hand, according to an email
sent to Schultz. The email also
mentioned touching cans being
knocked over after residents had
placed them curbside.
According to Schultz, cans
were never allowed to touch and
has been addressed in the past.
Currently, the trucks are being
retro fitted to accommodate the
small areas of the township with
older trashcan models. Addition-
ally, the collector picking up the
trashcans is moving more quick-
ly than the township workers,
who rode in the cab and moved
more slowly to the cans.
On social media, residents ad-
dressed leaf collection, a process
that began in October.
One comment from Facebook
detailed the townships purchase
of a $17,000 vacuum truck, ac-
cording to Schultz. The unnamed
commenter detailed how there
are frozen leaves on the ground,
forcing more manpower to shovel
the leaves and adding two extra
hours of overtime, an extra ex-
pense the township cannot af-
ford, the comment said.
My response: the township
does not use shovels for leaf col-
lection. We use pitchforks and
rakes. Leaf collection hasnt
slowed whether the leaves are
frozen to the ground or not, said
Schultz.

O
ral arguments in a lawsuit
brought by professional sports
teams and the NCAA against
Gov. Christie are scheduled to begin
this week. Recently, the leagues got a
boost. The U.S. Department of Justice
is jumping into the lawsuit on their
side.
Yep, your tax dollars are being used
against you.
Lets check the starting lineups.
On one side, you have unbelievably
wealthy sports leagues, the DOJ, illegal
bookies and point-shaving players. OK,
technically the last two arent part of
the lawsuit, but, if the leagues and
DOJ win, they win, too.
On the other side, you have Gov.
Christie, people who want to be able to
bet legally on sports in New Jersey, the
states casinos and horse racing tracks
and, well, everyone who would benefit
from a huge bump to our economy.
Which side are you on?
The suggestion that legalizing sports
betting in New Jersey would lead to an
increase in corruption, law-breaking,
pestilence, whatever, defies logic and
fact. Billions of dollars already are
being bet illegally on games. Players
and officials already have been caught
cheating to win bets.
In fact, the opposite is true. Making
sports betting legal would mean more
oversight of the system by people
both government and those folks actu-
ally taking the bets who want, to coin
a phrase, a level playing field.
It also would be a boost to the casi-
nos, tracks and the economy because
at least some of the money currently
being bet illegally would begin to flow
into legal betting outlets. Anyone seen
recent casino revenue reports? They
need help.
The feds, to coin another phrase, are
backing the wrong horse. New Jersey
needs legal sports betting. Its too bad
the DOJ doesnt see things that way.
in our opinion
Your tax dollars at work
Justice Department joins the ranks of leagues against sports betting in state
Sports betting
That the federal government has
entered a lawsuit to stop New Jerseys
efforts to legalize sports betting is a
slap in the face of every taxpayer here.
Sports betting would be an economic
boost, and in no way would endanger
the integrity of the games.

Deborah Hospital Foundation
to meet on Feb. 19
The Medford Area Chapter of the Debo-
rah Hospital Foundation will meet Tues-

morial Community Center, located at 21
South Main St.
The chapter meets the third Tuesday
each month except in July and August.
Super Bowl in the north
a bad idea, says writer
For the first time ever, the Super Bowl
will be conducted, not in the pleasant win-
ter sunshine of one of America's southern
states, but in the freezing conditions of
North Jersey.
The notion of doing this would have to
work its way up, in order to be considered
dumb.
Is there a doubt in anyone's mind that
weather will likely play a key role? Will
there be a huge Nor'easter? Or perhaps,
black ice?
This will no doubt occur just to prove
that God has a sense of humor and to pun-
ish those responsible for concocting such a
lame idea.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but really
isn't that why the NFL has always played
Super Bowls in warm climates?
Stephen R. Schwartz
BRIEFS
Since the township is no longer
responsible for trash collection,
more employees were assigned to
work on leaves and brush to speed
up the process.
One of four leaf vacuums is
currently being repaired and the
township is collecting as quickly
as possible, Schultz said. Addi-
tionally, all overtime is accounted
for if the township needs to ap-
prove it.
Its no secret Im frustrated
with the social media world, said
Schultz. I spent the last two days
reacting to comments made on
the social media pages. Im not
the monitor, its not attributable
and its misinformation.
As a result of answering resi-
dents, Schultz did not have a
budget prepared for the meeting
as planned.
He claimed he is still within
the states timeline to submit the
budget. Schultz plans to intro-
duce the budget by March and
have it up for adoption by late
April.
Pinelands Branch Library
In July, the township received a
letter from the county addressed
taking care of the building or re-
linquishing responsibility to the
county.
Councilman Jeff Beenstock re-
cently worked with freeholders,
reaching a 1-year agreement to
take care of the facility.
The agreement would cover
maintenance, utilities and insur-
ance up to $30,000.
Beenstock hopes for approval
at the next freeholders meeting.
The agreement was originally
supposed to be met in April 2012,
as addressed in a letter sent to the
township in July.
Schultz recently visited the
building to determine the num-
ber of repairs to do.
The township will be fixing
potholes, lights, taking care of
downed trees, gutter issues, the
paint at the crossing strips and
cracks in the interior walls.
We will continue to evaluate
how the library is doing going for-
ward, said Schultz.
Webster/Still property
The township recently spoke
with state representatives in the
parks division to clean up and
renovate the Webster/Still prop-
erty located on Church Road.
The goal is to make the prop-
erty a viable park resource, said
Pace.
According to Councilman
James Randy Pace, the state
and township do not have suffi-
cient funds for the project, howev-
er a couple of organizations have
stepped up financially.
Im impressed with the level
of intellect, time, effort and their
ability to bring together volun-
teers to make this thing happen,
he said. Theyre moving forward
and are going to make it happen.
Additionally, the state is will-
ing to discuss a contract and a
management agreement to make
it a historical site.
According to Pace, the cost to
the township wouldnt be more
than a minimal staff.
Next meeting
Public hearing for the ordi-
nances will be held at the next
township council meeting on Feb.
19 at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are held
at the Public Safety Building lo-
cated at 91 Union Street.

year.
We did Guys and Dolls this
year, which is very dance heavy,
said Kehl.
Preparations for the play
began in December. After three
cuts, 98 students were chosen as
the cast, including four student
athletes with no previous back-
ground in musicals. Additionally,
more males came out for the mu-
sical than any other year.
Theyre doing a really great
job, said Kehl. A lot of these
kids do so many other activities
too. Theyre really dedicated to
this.
Jackie Witherow and Spencer
Pargas will play Ariel Moore and
John Peterson, and David
Thomas will be playing the role of
Ren McCormack.
The cast will present six shows
over two weekends.
Im very excited, said With-
erow. Theres more to the play,
theres dancing, singing and act-
ing.
Rehearsals run for 10 weeks
with focus on the dancing portion
of the production.
Kehl emphasizes the time and
effort put forth by each student
and is confident it will translate
well on the stage.
I think its different than the
other shows weve done. Theres
a lot more dancing than other
shows, its not easy, said Kehl.
Kehl didnt encourage the cast
to watch the original version of
the movie or the recent 2011 re-
make so the movies did not sway
the actors interpretation. Howev-
er, a number of cast members had
already seen the film.
[The newer version of the
movie] helped me understand my
character better, said Witherow.
In the [1984 version of the
movie] its more party and happi-
ness. The new one is more emo-
tional, and helped me understand
Ariel and the problems she was
dealing with at home, added Par-
gas.
Seeing the movie changed how
Thomas felt about the play, noting
a missing fight scene from the
play.
It made the movie a little
more exciting, he said. It might
get put in the play.
The commanding show has
made cast members both nervous
and excited for the performance.
Even though I like the danc-
ing, its going to be a challenge
singing and dancing on stage. If
you mess up one, youll mess up
both, said Peterson.
Kehl is confident in her cast.
I had it in my mind we needed
to do a fun, upbeat show because
we have so many great dancers,
she said.
Footloose will open Feb. 22 at
Shawnee High School at 7 p.m. in
the auditorium.
Additional shows are slated for
Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Feb. 28
at 7 p.m. and March 1-2 at 7 p.m.
Tickets will be available on
Shawnees website,
www.lrhsd.org and at the door for
$10.
Come see it. Its a really fun
show for all ages, said Pargas.

one, filmed last summer by stu-
dents in the LDTV Summer
Workshop, is a parody of Carly
Rae Jepsen's hit Call Me Maybe.
Most often associated with tex-
ting or cell phone use, distracted
driving includes a host of activi-
ties, some seemingly benign. Eat-
ing, applying makeup, talking
with friends, or even listening to
the radio are things that can dis-
tract a driver's eyes and mind
from the road.
According to Donaldson, the
first year the Lenape Regional
campaign focused on texting.
"Last year the students
changed the title of the campaign
to Heads Up, Eyes Forward!, be-
cause they wanted to address all
of the different forms of distract-
ed driving," he said.
