Hes not just a pretty face Andrew Keoghan is also
an insanely talented multi-instrumentalist. Having
returning from a recent Europe and North American
tour so whats the frst thing he wants to do? Play for
his Kiwi fans. Andrew will preview a selection of new
songs, as well as material from his 2011 debut.
Balada Entertainment and Grape Vinyl presents
Nickodemus. From the early days of Giant Step,
to todays Turntables on the Hudson parties,
Nickodemus has been a key element in the NYC
dance music scene for over 10 years. Hes joined by
Dj Tamenpi, with support from Bobby Brazuka and
Zane Tee.
I see what he did there thats a catchy title, but
to be honest I also expect to see some rhinestones
because they are cool and shinny. For one night only,
the rapping sensation Daniel Urquhart whose self-
proclaimed passion in life is hip-hop and horses will
be galloping all the way from the South Island to
bring his cheeky rhymes.
Flip, real name Clare, Grater is back from France to
celebrate the Kiwi summer (cleverly escaping the cold).
The Christchurch singer-songwriter is touring through
some of her favourite local spots, taking her indie-folk
sound to new places as well as familiar ones, debuting
hot tracks from her fourth album (out this year).
Make a day of it on the Shore, starting with the
Devonport Wine & Food Festival and ending with one
of the top parties of summer! Presented by Highlife
Entertainment, The Tuborg Sounds of Summer is
back at the Masonic Tavern with a power packed
international and local line-up including Argentinian-
born Space Ibiza resident DJ Paul Darey!
Every man and his dog loves a good vineyard tour.
Why? Booze and music, why else? Of course you cant
actually bring your dog into the concert, but you can
bring your friends or family. The Tauranga sun will
keep you going all through the night as you listen to
Kiwi act Opshop and Che-Fu and Aaradhna, as well as
Aussie Missy Higgins.
This stellar event pairs the homegrown spectacular
that is the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra
with the best ukulele soloist in the world James Hill
in a summer double bill of ukulele magic. Look out for
Somewhere Over the Rainbow, surely one of the most
popular songs on the ukulele, thanks to 50 First Dates.
Its not some satanic ritual disguised in the middle
of the Garden City, so leave your crazy at home. New
Zealands hottest up and coming band Devilskin are
taking the rock scene by storm and riding high on
their recent success. The Hamilton rockers are proud
to announce their South Island debut in Christchurch
by popular demand.
Break out the jump rope; lay down some vinyl and

Possibly the biggest Winery Tour line-up to date,
this staple summer show has become an iconic
event since its inception seven years ago. This years
headline act is Fat Freddys Drop, joined by the
sensational Anika (Moa), Boh (Runga) & Hollie (Smith)
collaboration, and to top it off is The Adults, featuring
Jon Toogood, Julia Deans and Shayne Carter.
Ohemgee. I dont want to get you excited but Pat Benatar!
Possibly one of the greatest 80s rock icons ever
(depending how you look at it). Shes joined by fellow
performers Neil Giraldo, giants of rock n roll Bachman
& Tuner and America. Pats a four time Grammy winner
and not to mention, and more importantly, she sung
the karaoke classic Love Is a Battlefeld.
G Thomas is best known for writing the pop hits of Kiwi
band Goodshirt, and has also worked with a range of
recording artists including Bic Runga, Golden Horse,
Future Cut, Sarah Brown, Steve Abel and Dave Yetton.
Everyone will love the acoustic/alternative sound of

you into a middle-afternoon coma of delight.
For their frst New Zealand tour in 10 years, who is to

the Auckland Fringe event. Step through the magical gates (so to speak) and
be prepared for all the unconventional content you can shake your fnger
at. Auckland Fringe is an open access arts festival, providing a platform for
performers to present innovative work in an environment of artistic freedom.
Public spaces will be taken over by cinema, theatre and dancing, and purpose-
built areas (theatres, halls swimming pools) will house alternative content in all
forms. Myers Park has activities for the kids, grins, eye-openings, lost islands and
40-plus Fringe acts sharing their spoils. Bring the family for a live Instagram of

With an ear for music and an eye for
the landscape Mt Zion starts New
zealands flmmaking year on a good
note. Its not going to boil up the
country in the way Boy did, but this
is a homegrown muso drama to be
proud of.
Stan Walker does well portraying
the daftly nave Turei, a potato
picker with a stupendous voice who
dreams of being the opening act for
Bob Marley & the Wailers Auckland
concert. Though Walkers range is
limited (re: his acting, not his singing),
his game is lifted signifcantly when
onscreen with his superb bro-counsel
co-stars musician Troy Kingi,
Shortland Streeter David Wikaira-Paul
and ghost chips internaliser Darcy
Ray Flavell-Hudson whose group
chemistry throbs with a naturally
humorous vibrancy that pulsates
throughout the flm. Temuera
Morrison is perfectly nuanced as
Tureis father, a man of the land
who uses his whanau-heavy morals
to level his sons increasingly self-
indulgent aspirations.
The flm delights in recreating
1979 Pukekohe, from the intimate
low-income neighbourhoods to
the terrible facial hair styling on the
record producers faces. Managing
to romanticise the era without
shamelessly over-glorifying it,
writer-director Tearepa Kahi uses the
beauty of the land as a contrast to a
cultural lifestyle hit by the effects of
urbanisation.
I wish the big confrontation near
the end carried more weight, for it
resolves in a way that feels far too
subdued. Nevertheless, I commend
Mt Zion for how it flters its by-the-
numbers themes through the values
of traditional Maori communities,
producing something fresh and
wholesome. And be prepared to hum
those tunes days after youve left the
cinema.

The world of fantasy and reality collide in a brand
new season of the hit show. In season two, the
fairytale characters awaken from the curse and
remember who they truly are. To their dismay, they
arent transported back to fairytale land. To make
matters worse, Rumpelstiltskin introduces magic into
the town.
Billed as the spin off from Knocked Up, we reunite
with Leslie Manns character and her husband, played
by Paul Rudd as she turns 40 (well, 38 in her eyes).
As she struggles to come to terms with her age, she
slips into a mid-life crisis, with some very funny yet
heartwarming results.
The new season of Family Guy is here, and continues
on with more celebrity guest stars and controversy
than you can shake a stick at. This latest episode is
looking at the birth of Jesus. Ryan Reynolds lends his
voice as the Son of God and the story is populated
with all your favourite characters in various roles.
Based on Saturday Night Live sketches, the iconic Dan

American dream. They raise their teenage daughter
Connie and live with secret identities while being
tracked incessantly by an INS agent.

If ever a name was a good indication of what to expect A Deco would
be it. Named Cuisine magazines Best Regional Restaurant (Runner-up)
and Best Chef, A Deco brings a sense of 1920s glamour and class to
their restaurant in every way from the food to the dcor, nothing
looks out of place. The house also boasts delightful subtropical
gardens, making it a real summer stop if you are heading northwards.
Using Northlands wonderfully fresh and diverse produce, and
working closely with local suppliers and growers to create menus
which follows the seasons is something A Deco prides themselves on.

Set in grandeur of one of Dunedins historic buildings,
Bacchus has become one of Dunedins leading
restaurants and number-one places for New Zealand
and imported wines. Its the atmosphere as much as
anything, with views of the Octagon as the sun sets
and a warm, inviting feeling inside.
This quirky little pop-up embodies whats important
at the real Hamptons in Long Island beach life. The
restaurants blue beach shacks and sun umbrellas are
a dramatic contrast to the grey concrete of Aucklands
central business district, and brings the seaside to the
working world. The Hamptons will be around until May.

Are you a fend for sweet sugary alcoholic treats? What if rums and
bourbons are more your style? You name the favours you like and
Toasts expert cocktail craftsman will whip them up in a furry of
fresh ingredients and premium spirits. Toast has developed a long-
standing reputation for awesome cocktails, local Djs and some crazy
bartending. Their staff have won a couple awards for their cocktails
too, including the Suntory Cup, Trans Tasman Cocktail Competition
and De Kuyper Best Bar Team. But in true Dunedin fashion, its a
cocktail bar without the pomp and pretense just a fun, friendly
atmosphere with people who are passionate about what they do.

Benatar, the four-time Grammy winner, alongside her producer/
guitarist husband, Giraldo, have 10 platinum selling albums and 19 top
40 singles to their name. not to mention writing some of the 80s most
memorable hits, hit me With Your Best Shot, Love is a Battle field,
We Belong and heartbreaker among many others.
Benatar, who has been singing since the age of eight, has a 13 disc back
catalogue which she began working on when she quit her bank teller
job in 1973. a Liza minnelli concert would be the event that gave her the
inspiration to start singing full time.
from singing in the school choir, to a one year stint in university
studying health education, to bank teller, to singing waitress, Benatar
has almost done it all on her long road to success.
In The Heat Of The Night, Benatars frst album with Giraldo, put out an
unfortunately unsuccessful frst and second single. however single three
if You think You Know how to Love me was an immediate success.
the album, produced by mike Chapman, cemented Benatar as a new
force in rock and caused Chapman to break his vow of never taking on a
new artist again after hearing the original demo tapes. In The Heat Of The
Night would be the frst in a long line of many successes for Benatar and
Giraldo.
Giraldo, arguably one of the fnest and most underrated guitarists of
the 80s arena rock genre, landed a guitarist gig with rick Derringer not
long after bars. however the band wasnt to last, with Derringer become
intimidated by Giraldos growing stage presence and ability. after having
his role in the band cut down and other such politics, Giraldo left the
band and relocated to new York City. after the move, it would soon be
suggested to Giraldo that he joined forces with an up and coming singer
by the name of Pat Benatar. as Benatar gained greater fame, Giraldos
part in the band grew accordingly.
it wasnt long before Giraldo and Benatar gelled and after a string of
hit albums and singles, alongside Giraldos talent, Benatar was quickly
established one of the greatest female rock voices of the 80s. With
Giraldo writing alongside Benatar and producing the albums, his talent
was quickly known. he began to lend them out to other recording artists,
something he continues to do to this day.
Benatar and Giraldo were married in 1982 and even though the hits
started to dry up, they continued to release albums and the kept touring
regularly as well as raising a family.
all in all the duo have been making music together for 34 years and
have been equally successful in other musical ventures. outside of the
composer and producer role on Benatars albums Giraldo has back
catalogue consists of an array of hits hes helped pen for the likes of John
Waite, rick Spring field. Giraldo has seen success with songs co-written
for Kenny Loggins, Beth hart, and the Del-Lords, to only scratch the
surface.
their support acts, Bachman & turner and america, have legacies of
their own. Bachman found success with the Guess Who when their
single american Woman shot to number one on the billboard charts
- a frst for a Canadian act. While america quickly became a global
household name following their single a horse With no name and a
string of other hits.
it is no surprise then that their original itinerary wasnt satisfactory for
fans. Due to intense demand the pair added another show, this one at
Wellingtons michael fowler Centre, to what was originally only three
shows across the north island (taupo, matakana and Queenstown).
With 34 years of back catalogue choosing a set list wouldnt have been an
easy task, but the duo are slated to play their aforementioned mega hits,
while Bachman & turner will playing some of theirs including the much
loved taking Care of Business.

ShirLeY manSon DoeSnt want to talk about break-ups. nor does
she want to talk about that infamous moment walking offstage in Perth
in 2005, or that time she took a shit in an ex-boyfriends cornfakes.
But the Garbage front woman is very open about relationships in terms
of Garbage and their tour down under to promote their latest album Not
Your Kind of People .
the rock band pre hiatus was known for their live shows. When they
last came to new Zealand on their Beautiful Garbage tour 10 years ago,
they were welcomed with open arms, despite the tour being plagued by
problems elsewhere from Shirleys sore throat to drummer Butch Vigs
two rounds of sickness.
Shirley is excited to be back on the road and heading to new Zealand and
australia the place where Garbage initially found fame in the 1990s.
We are in an incredible privileged position. not many bands can go
away for seven years and come back to this incredible welcome. We
feel this is our lightning in the bowl moment. this isnt going to come
around for us again, so we are just trying to ride the waves and hope for
the best! she laughs.
the two shows in auckland and Wellington will be the frst time Kiwi
fans can hear songs from the bands latest album Not Your Kind of People
played live. the album also marks a frst for Garbage it is their only
record produced solely under their own label Stun Volume.
it was a relationship breakdown, Shirley explains with a pause, when
asked why the band separated from their previous label. Describing
themselves as the band that didnt ft in, Garbage had fnally become at
loggerheads with their record company and eventually, each other. But
for Shirley, walking off tour in 2005 wasnt the end of Garbage it was
the beginning of a beautiful and more harmonious relationship.
it was more than just our frustration with our record company, she
explains. it was also our role in the relationship. We were at odds with
them in certain parts of the world because the label just didnt see eye-to-
eye with us.
for Shirley, this meant the most easy and natural thing to do was to
start their own label, have a good time and start out the way they want.
and it shows. the new album sounds like a return to form, a return
to the sound that made Garbage who they were Stupid Girl,
Supervixen a blend of pop, rock and Shirleys distinctive growl that
makes Garbage indefnable.
it makes me happy when people say that [this album is like the frst],
she says. i know the frst record we made really connected to people
and i feel like people are responding in a similar way to this one, even
though the records.
Learning form the mistakes made in their earlier relationship, this
album also represents a truly collaborative effort between Shirley and
fellow band members Duke erikson, Steve marker and Butch Vig.
i think we realised in order to have a happy band, you need to have
everyone really invested in it, Shirley says with a laugh. We didnt
write separately like we have in the past. this time round for the most
part everyone wrote songs in the same room as one, and it made for a
happier family.

Statistics show most people meet their future
partner in a bar, so if there is a specially organised
singles event chances are looking pretty high youll
score! Everyone who arrives between 7 to 8pm gets
a complimentary Passionberry cocktail. The event is
hosted by Cleo Bachelor of the Year fnalist Stephen
Buckley! RSVP to rsvp.chapel@xtra.co.nz
If dinner and drinks is more your scene, bring your
loved one (or someone you just met) down to El
Gusto and treat them with their Shared Lovers Menu.
Live music to get you in the mood from Los Dos
Gitano, and to top it all off all, bookings will receive a
complimentary glass of bubbles.
Haters are gonna hate, but at least these guys are
doing something about it! If you think VD is just an
over-commercialised piece of shit, then get on the
bandwagon. This year, celebrate by being a part of an
anti-valentines night. Petra Rijnbeek will be singing
and there is a promise of no slow love songs.
VD is not all chocolates and roses so if youre
marriage, partnership, dating situation has you down,
relationship consulting is on hand to help you fx the
cracks before it may be too late. Theyll help you get
back on track, set aside an hour or so for you two to
connect again and has out any ongoing issues behind
closed doors.
When you picked up your partner spinning some
sharn about youre love being written in the stars,
now you can actually say your love it up there. This
unique event is an unforgettable date where you
get a romantic guided tour of the night sky from the
comfort of the reclined seats AND you get your very
own star.
Enjoy a six-course degustation in the Grand Lobby
with glass of bubbles (with optional wine pairing). You
will have your own intimate table to share with your
special other half. Following that, sit back and enjoy
a special pre-release screening of the new Stephen
Merchant romantic comedy I Give It a Year at 8:30pm.

As dodgy as it may sound, its not about getting
down and dirty on the raceway. Its actually a special
Lindauer Lawn twilight race meeting. Mix and mingle
with the fnest ladies and gents in Canterbury, while
enjoying eight action packed sprint races with only 20
minutes between them. Dress to impress, just saying.
Star gazing seems to be a common theme on
Valentines Day. Is it like the new jewellery? If you
do enjoy a good gaze at the universe, sit back this
Valentines night at Carter Observatory. Treat your
loved one to a starry, romantic planetarium show,
bubbles, a sweet treat and stargazing through the
historic Cooke telescope (weather-dependent).
Its the romantic comedy that defned a generation
and gave young women unrealistic expectations of
love, but its a classic fick with a big heart. Hear Inigo
Montoya utter those immortal words, or what stable
hand Westley take on the ROUS in the Fire Swamp.
Silo Park is the perfect location to snuggle under the
nights sky.

LiKe BiC runGa, anika moa and amiria Grenell in aotearoa, missy
higgins is australias answer to girl with a guitar and brain exploding with
ideas and creativity. its a shame that we dont hear more of her and her
compatriots because what she does is slick, clever and down right brilliant.
But thats all about to be rectifed when she joins Che fu and aaradhna
on the morefm Summer Vineyard tour, which is set to head out from
mills reef Winery tauranga on fri 15 feb . higgins told me shes quite
stoked at gigging in the wine country. i love my job, she cooed down
the phone.
Back over the ditch shes racked up wax time with a bunch of australian
number-one albums: The Sound of White (2004), On a Clear Night (2007)
and her latest The Ol Razzle Dazzle (2012) plus a pile of nominations at the
aria awards, including seven for the latter.
her latest shows a real maturity and spark, a sign that shes really arrived.
Set me on fire is pure unadulterated pop with heart. unashamed Desire
is a hook laden driver, whilst the almost a cappella everyones waiting
has the soul of Gospel and the narration of a good soundtrack.
With a presence that is smoky and universal without a hint of the
gawd-awful aussie twang we all twinge at her music has a universal
maturity that should go well with her Chardonnay and Sauvignon
audiences during the upcoming shows. But Razzle Dazzle has an
underlying narrative, too, tucked away and i was keen to fnd out about
the driver behind it.
to answer that, higgins took me back to when she started writing music
for her third album in 2009.
i also wanted to try flm and did my debut as annie in [the 2010 flm]
Bran Nue Dae [directed by rachel Perkins].
the flms an adaptation of the 1990 musical of the same name and possibly
australias frst aboriginal musical, she chimes in. i think i needed a
break to understand things and myself from a different perspective.
higgins freely admits to political activism on behalf of frst nation
peoples, animals, climate change and gay rights. in australia i often
stand out on these things. People still ask why i support aboriginal
rights. its not as accepted as it is over there [in new Zealand].
in July 2010, she reluctantly took up an earlier commitment to play
several dates of at Sarah mcLachlans Lilith fair tour through the uS.
But then she met fellow aussie musician Butterfy Boucher. they hit
it off and decided to collaborate at Bouchers place in nashville and to
record a few numbers.
that led to a snowballs momentum, crashing though her musical apathy
and the writers block shed amassed over the years. it also led to a
wonderful moment when she got to duet with WomaD artist Geoffrey
Gurrumul Yunupingu.
You dont get that many honors, even in music so that was really special.
heres hoping her time in aotearoa will be special, too.
