Dr Chopra is Professor of Medicine and Faculty Dean for
Continuing Education at Harvard Medical School and Senior
Consultant in Hepatology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center, Boston. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Hepatology Section of
UpToDate and has more than 120 publications and six books to
his credit. The recipient of numerous awards in the past 25 years,
including the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Distinguished
Educator Award, Dr Chopra was elected in 2009 as a Master of
the American College of Physicians, an honor bestowed upon
citizen physicians, educational innovators, scientific thinkers,
and humanists who inspire and set the standards for quality
in medicine. Dr Chopra serves as Course Director for several
CME courses, including seven annual Current Clinical Issues in
Primary Care. His most recent books include Dr. Chopra Says:
Medical Facts and Myths Everyone Should Know, which has been
translated into multiple languages; Live Better, Live Longer. The
New Studies That Reveal Whats Really Good and Bad for Your
Health; and Leadership by Example: The Ten Key Principles of All

Drs Chopra and Aronson will cover the greatest discoveries and
scientific advances in the last 100 years. All scientific breakthroughs
come in fits and starts. The stories behind the discovery of drugs
like penicillin and statins; the discovery of vaccines for polio and
hepatitis B; the control of HIV, the greatest of all plagues, with
HAART therapy; the cure of diseases such as hepatitis C; the history
of how the birth control pill came about; and advances in cardiology
such as the development of the pacemaker for complete heart
block have not only changed medicine forever but also make for
fascinating tales that combine serendipity with brilliant science.

Global Child Health at the Tipping Point:
lessons from the Field

Chair, Department of Pediatrics
Dr Kline will share insights from his experiences in creating
collaborative programs in developing nations that dramatically
change the outlook for children affected by life-threatening
but treatable diseases. His vision? A healthy and fulfilled life
for every HIV-infected or affected child and his family. A brief
review of the current status of child survival globally will set the
stage. Dr Kline will then discuss how efforts to scale up the care
and treatment of HIV-infected children can be adapted to fight
a variety of other serious or life-threatening diseases impacting
children and families globally.
Dr Fordis is the founding Director of the Center for
Collaborative and Interactive Technologies (CCIT) at Baylor
College of Medicine (BCM), where he is engaged in research,
development, and use of multimedia, information, and distance
learning technologies in professional and patient education and
in specific, related health care applications. He also serves as
the Senior Associate Dean and Director of Continuing Medical
Education at BCM. Dr Fordis joined BCM from the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), where he most recently served for six
years as the first Director of the NIH Office of Education. His
research interests focus upon the applications of technology
to physician learning and behavioral change, approaches to
outcomes assessment, and development and use of educational
resources for faculty.

Telephone medicine, a major component of Telehealth,
has transformed clinical primary care. This presentation
will discuss five advances that can most potentially impact
clinical practice for both you and your patients. These
include 1) the dramatic growth in After Hours Call Centers,
2) payment for telephone time, 3) Quality Improvement-
Risk Management efforts, 4) Telemedicine, and 5) the
recent American Academys support of telephone medicine
through the Section on Telephone Care.

This presentation will review the evidence related to sexual
abuse of women. Screening measures will be discussed,
and considerations in providing primary care for sexually
abused women will be offered.

the Pediatric neurologist
An overview of the incidence and diverse character of
seizures and epilepsy in children. Highlight the various
types of epilepsy that begin at different ages and stages
of development. Discuss and review the evaluation and
management of febrile seizures and a first-time seizure,
including review of the relevant practice parameters
from the Child Neurology Society and the American
Epilepsy Society. Provide guidelines of when to refer to
the Pediatric Neurologist.

Coffee in Health and Disease
This presentation critically reviews the results of recent
studies on the benefits and harms associated with coffee
consumption. It focuses on the relationship between coffee
and common medical conditions, including hypertension,
diabetes, heart failure, and cancer. Practitioners will
be equipped to advise patients on the interpretation
of studies popularized by the media on this widely
consumed beverage.

Ethical Considerations in shared
Decision making*
Contemporary medical ethics emphasizes the importance
of including the patient in the decision-making process, a
concept known as shared decision making. Newly trained
clinicians often take this idea too far. Seasoned clinicians,
in contrast, sometimes dismiss it as unrealistic. This
presentation will use specific examples to show when the
concept of shared decision making is relevant and when
it should be avoided.
