Gday

As we know Power and Water keep the lights on, water flowing, society moving and our economy growingbut did you know? We as Territorians own the Power, Water and Sewerage assets that provide these essential services to all Territorians. OUR tax dollars have gone into building and maintaining this infrastructure.

PWC employs over 1000 employees including 80 apprentices. Recently the Government has raised electricity prices by 30%, water by 40% and sewerage by 25% while also making comments about selling these assets. What would this mean for your family, your business and the Northern Territorys future?

Reliability and Safety

Example A
The Cyclone Carlos Darwin and the Top End Jan 2011 experience

Example B
The Black Saturday Bushfires

- Public asset responding to public need.

Up to 100 Power and Water staff worked in the field at any one time, including relief crews from Alice Springs and Katherine. Some areas of the Top End were inaccessible due to flooding and the extent of the damage to infrastructure made it difficult to provide customers with restoration times, however most had power restored in a few days. The success was due in no small part to the fact that state owned electricity supplier PWC has depots in many local communities and the company puts service first.

- Private failure leads to public pain in Victoria.

The Black Saturday bushfires raged through Victoria on Saturday, February 7, 2009, killing 173 people, injuring 414 and destroying 2030 homes. The Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission found that five of the Black Saturday bushfires including the Kilmore East and Murrindindi blazes that claimed 159 lives were caused in no small part by electricity asset failures linked to lack of maintenance and upkeep.

Decide for yourself what is best for you and the Northern Territory

Whats at stake? Power and Water Corporation 100% Public Owned

Currently owns and maintains one billion dollars worth of infrastructure assets spread across 1.3 million square kms of the NT including; More than 8,000 kms of power lines More than 2,000 kms of water mains More than 1,000 kms of sewer mains More than 22,000 streetlights

The CLP debt myth exposed

All companies, Governments and for that matter many families carry some form of debt, whether it is a mortgage, a car loan or a second mortgage to renovate. Most of these types of loans are manageable when paid off through a sensible payment plan over 10 or 20 years. However the CLP Government has decided to force Territorians to pay off debt taken out to fix essential service infrastructure over one term, hence the 30% and 40% increases to essential service charges. The previous Government had a sensible payment plan in place that would have meant limited price increases and been in the best interests of Territorians. The CLP Government is seeking to fatten the PWC calf for sale, retire debt and sell our essential services to companies that will put profits and bottom line before communities and service.
