Creativity 30 seconds of change This is an organization that I co-founded with Sofia Gomez-Doyle and Tatenda Mashanda. It is basically a platform that can be used by youths to express and share their ideas on how to change various aspects of the society. The main idea came from Sofia Gomez-Doyle (IB2) and in this venture I am responsible for all technical aspects of the organization including the website designing, assisting the design section in making the brochures and making decisions on which technology we will support and use as an organization. In Focus In Focus is a club that specializes in the presentation and discussion concerning different countries around the world. During the 1 hour session we take time to hear a presentation about a given country, ask questions and comment on specific agendas concerning that country. In this club not only I have listened to various presentations but I have also given a presentation concerning my country Tanzania and talked about the social, economic and political aspects. Leadership development Forum In Leadership development forum we take time to discuss about various issues in respect with the political field. The main aim of most of our discussions is to place ourselves in the position of political leaders in a real life case study and see what decisions we would have made in those situations either being different or supporting the existing solutions and why would we make such decisions. We also take time to listen to various discussions and debate on various socio-political motions. Playing the piano The year 2012 marked my first time ever in my lifetime to touch and play a piano. I spend most of the piano sessions learning various new keys and practicing how to play them in a coordinated way in order to produce pleasant sounds. Web designing Currently I have about 9 website designing projects and in those 7 of them are from various clients. I make websites from scratch using notepad and an internet browser of debugging purposes. Currently I am making a website for Aperture foundation which is a local based NGO in Tanzania founded by a Waterford student, Native Filmes www.nativefilmes.co.cc a filming company, ShediPRO.CO www.shedipro.co.cc a music label, Young Coders www.youngcoders.co.cc an organization I founded, 30 seconds of change

www.30secondsofchange.org , Dee Jay Chaos www.deejaychaos.com which is a website for a renewed DJ in Kenya who is currently in IB2 here at Waterford Kamhlaba and others which are still under development. Action Athletics Although I had the most disappointing Athletics results in my lifetime in this year nevertheless it was a great opportunity participating in the inter house competitions and being chosen for the 400 metres athletics school team. Due to various reasons I was off my best time for about 1 whole minute and my latest time was 12.5 seconds in the 100 metres dash. But it wasnt all of a disappointing encounter as I was able to secure a silver medal in the 400 metres race. I learnt a lot of techniques that will hopefully enhance my performance in the next tournaments. Squash I had an idea of playing squash before coming here at Waterford but I wasnt a regular squash player. But since I joined the squash club I have been able to considerably improve my skills that I ended up participating in the squash tournament held at school. It was a great challenge as I faced people who played squash since they were about 7 years old and was able to secure some points. Although I failed to secure any kind of medal I am proud to what I was able to achieve provided I had less than 8 months of proper training. Night Soccer Every Thursday together with a group of other IB1s we usually play soccer from 9.00pm to 10.15pm. One of the most fascinating things about night soccer is we get to play with people with a variety of soccer skills from those who have made it in the school team to other people like me who are playing soccer just out of interest. Also, in the night soccer session we get to mix with girls who are willing to play. Although at times rain and cold might affect the chances of playing at night nevertheless we still go out and enjoy the sessions. Table Tennis This is also one of the sports that I have started playing upon my arrival at Waterford. I had several informal practice sessions and in July I was able to participate in the Elangeni House Table tennis tournament. Although I was knocked out of the competition in the first round after playing Balakwana Mabeta, it was a great experience to participate in it.

Service In house leavers In the Inhouse leavers of 2012 I helped setting up the venue by removing tables from the dining hall and chairs from the CCLD. Also, after the dinner was over I took part in the team that was responsible in moving chairs and tables back to their respective places. Movie making In this year although we havent made any considerable progress in the movie making community service, we have managed to produce a school advert and a video documenting the human rights day. We have also been able to collect footage documenting the Peace day, the form 5 variety show and slam poetry. At some stage during the course of the year we decided to specialize in various disciplines of video editing and I chose to deal with video editing. It has been a challenging task since on my case I am used to edit videos using Adobe Premiere Pro but coming here and being present with Apple Final Cut was a bit challenging as I had to learn take time learning and adapting to the new editing environment that I was presented with. Painting a Juvenile prison This was my first community service that I performed after I got admitted to Waterford Kamhlaba. In this day we were taken to a Juvenile prison whereby we had to paint their classrooms. This also marked my first encounter with paint as I had never undertaken such an activity back home. It was a great day and I learnt new skills regarding the painting of a building. Later on after the task we had a soccer match which ended up in a 1-1 draw!! Sobiyozo Primary school service In celebrating the 50th anniversary of UWC, the development office devised the 50 hours of service program. On the day that I went to do part of the service program we had a task of laying a concrete slab on the floor and also filling adding soil which would act as a floor base in another room. This was the first day in my life to mix cement and sand using a shovel only. The job was very tedious but I learnt a lot regarding the fundamentals of cement mixing and layering of cement to make a floor. Swahili night This was an event whereby we were simulating the Swahili culture by wearing Swahili clothes, eating Swahili foods and listening to Swahili music. My task in this day was to create a slideshow that had various pictures of countries that have the Swahili culture this includes Tanzania, Kenya and Zanzibar. Also, I was supposed to make a speech about the history of

Swahili culture. Thanks to the internet this wasnt a tedious task as I was able to get royalty free Images from the internet without any problems. Also, I used my history notes and various websites to write a detailed account of Swahili culture and a timeline on how it developed to what we know today. Waterford Fete In our tutor groups, we were required to come up with a fund raiser event that could help in raising funds for the schools community service activities. Our tutor group came up with the idea of the maze whereby we had to create a human maze on the soccer grounds using sticks and strings. The task was quite challenging since at times we did wrong calculations and hence had to redo some sections of the maze several times. Although, we didnt execute the main maze plan as we had to modify some parts of it in order to finish it due to time constraint nevertheless in was a successful activity as many people not only enjoyed it but were also challenged by the whole structure. I also, took part in supervising the stall by receiving payment and observing the participants making sure they dont violate any rules that governed the maze. Young Coders This is a self made project that I started when I went back home during my August holiday. Basically this is a series of computer programming workshops that I will be conducting to young people who are aged not more than 15 years. The main focus in the first series of these workshops is to change the mindset of the participants concerning the concept of programming. In the later stages I will be concentrating on teaching participants on how to create mobile apps using simple technologies such as web technologies. Although the idea I still an abstract one among many people but I am looking forward to make some kind of impact to my community and the world at large.

REFLECTION: Increased awareness of your own strength and areas of growth: There are two activities that I really think that I think I have increased the awareness of my own strength and discovered the areas in which I can grow. Starting with squash, I never actually noted that I have good racket- eye coordination and that I can adapt to various techniques without much difficulty. Also, web designing is the other area that I have increased awareness of my strength. In May 2012 thats when I made my first real website from scratch. It was about a group called WK think tank although the website itself wasnt published but that marked a beginning of a new career to me. Since then I have considerably improved and I have several clients who I am working for. Before I didnt know the strength I had in web technologies but now I have a glimpse of what I can achieve in the future. The main area of growth that I have noticed is Night soccer. Although I regarded myself as a veteran in soccer, I have realized that with more training I can actually decide to take this activity to a whole new level. In these sessions I get to play with people who are in the school team and this has helped me to gain a lot of useful skills. Planned and initiated activities: One of the biggest things that I have done during this year is the starting of Young coders. I knew very well that it will be hard conducting the workshops I intended to do since this a very abstract idea but nevertheless that didnt stop me in starting this programme. Although I asked about 3 schools for the permission to do my workshops for free, only one school had the students and resources that could enable me teach the participants. The main emphasis was on changing the mindset that most of my participants who viewed programming as a tedious activity that few people can undertake. I didnt have time giving out a test or some sort of assessment to the participants but I believe most of them understood what I taught as they were able to recite the examples I had given to them. Worked collaboratively with others: In the movie making community service I have been able to work together with other students in making various videos for the school. In this community service everyone has specialized in something that he/she needs to do. There are situations were by the filming, directing, editing, choreography and audio sampling are done by different people. Therefore for our projects to work smoothly an efficient way of communicating has been essential in our community service. Also, I have worked with other during the painting of Sobiyozo primary

school. As we collectively had to mix the cement and lay the concrete slab on the floor whereby we had people who pushed the wheel barrows from the area where the cement was being mixed and also we had a team of people who actually did the mixing manually. And for this activity to be successful effective communication was an essential tool.

Shown perseverance and commitment in your activities: In the Waterford fete that was one area that I showed perseverance and commitment. During the day of the event I had to wake up around 6 am to go and chop bamboo sticks from one of the areas around school and cut them to more than 100 pieces. Also, we had to set up the maze and due to some mistakes we made in the calculations people started saying that this idea will fail. But just as everyone else we tried all we could do to finish on time even if it included devising a plan B at the scene. I am glad that at the end it worked out well. Also, during my squash training towards the tournament I went to train with either Itmum Monin or Shepherd Matsongoni everyday although I knew that the possibilities of me winning against renowned players such as Mr. Olton were almost impossible. But that negative attitude didnt stop me from training everyday inorder to perfrom better during the competition. Although, I didnt qualify to the semi finals but I improved a lot. Engaged with issues of global importance: In Young coders I have been able to bring an impact in the technological transition which is going on around the world. Most areas in my society have experienced a very slow if not stagnant growth in developing technology that could be used to help our society. So the idea of teaching young people on how to make computer programs can help in the growth of technology in my country after a few years to come. In Swahili night I was able to engage in issues of global importance. It has been publicized a lot that many people are losing their cultures due to globalization and there have been various debates on how some cultures might be considered superior compared to other cultures. In this day we were able to discuss about the Swahili culture where it came from and why its a valuable culture to both the people and the whole globe at large. This was an issue of global importance as I took part in an event that showed how rich other cultures might be although they are not known to the world. Furthermore, in Leadership development forum we discuss about issues of global importance from the case study of Mexico immigrants in the USA to refugee and war situations in Democratic Republic of Congo. This has helped me increase awareness of some of the

Harvey Kadyanji 7 CAS Report 2012

matters that are happening in the world that need attention as if a wrong decision will be made this will affect the whole world in one way or another. Considered the ethical implications of your actions: The painting of the walls of the juvenile prison was something that at first brought discomfort to me. In the presence of young people who have been convicted for theft or any other crime was a phenomena that was a bit intimidating in the beginning of the activity since in the society I come from its ethically wrong to associate oneself with an individual who has been convicted of a crime or has done something wrong in the society. But at the end of the day I realized that those people meant no any harm and they were really ready to get back in the society and not repeat the mistake that they did before. However, when I explain that to most people home they dont seem to understand how I managed to perform the activity safely and peacefully.

Developed new skills: In the Sobiyozo Primary school community service I develop a new skill of mixing cement manually. I am used to see machines doing this tedious job during construction but in this case I was the one who had to take a shovel and together with other people we had to mix the sand and cement in the required proportions. Also, the painting of the Juvenile prison helped me in learning how to paint the walls of a building, the materials to use and also the techniques. It was fascinating how simple jobs had all these strict rules we had to follow while performing them as when one diverted from the instructions the end product wasnt that satisfying. For the first time in my life I started playing the piano here at Waterford although I am still a beginner but now I am confident of playing few notes and I can play folk songs such as 3 blind mass and see saw. I have also been able to develop table tennis skills as when I came here I didnt even know how to hold properly the table tennis racket but now I can do much more such as hitting the ball in different techniques and have been able to score some of my opponents by wide ranges such as 11-1.

Undertaken new challenges: 30 seconds of change has been a new challenge in my life as not only I am making decisions that have technological implications for this organization but also I am building its foundation hence if I make a bad decision it might cause the whole vision of Sofia (the person with the idea) to crumble and that will be upon on me. Apart from that the building of a very new web designing system which includes security issues, blog system and video sharing a concept that is completely new to me is something that I consider it as a challenge and I am glad that up to now I have achieved most things I planned and I have been able to set the organization in a good direction. Conclusion One of the most important things is that these activities have brought happiness, opportunities and friends to me. I have had fun doing them, I have met a lot of people from Bank executives to renowned news reporters and also I have talked to people in school whom I dont share any class with them. I think CAS should be part and parcel of every individual and shouldnt just be a requirement that we need to fulfill as its benefit are too many to mention.
