PleasenotethatWindowsNTisnotaUSBcapableoperatingsystemasstandardandsoisnot
coveredinthisdocument.
InorderthatWindows98GoldEditionbeUSBcapable,allrelevantpatchesmustbeobtained
andinstalledfromtheMicrosoftwebsite.
DownloadthelatestavailableCXIdriverfromthePhocoswebsiteorfromyourPhocosCDand
unzipthemtoalocationonyourPC.
UsetheSubdirectoryWindows98ifyourPCisbasedonWindows98

2. InstallingthePhocosCXIDevice
ThedrivertypeisthevirtualCOMport(VCP)driver.TheVCPdriversemulateastandardPC
COMport.ThesecanbecommunicatedwithinthesamemannerasanyotherCOMportonthe
PC.

2.1. Windows98andWindowsME
UnderWindows98,theFoundNewHardwareWizardshouldbeusedtoinstalldevicewhenthey
areconnectedtothePCforthefirsttime.Attemptingothermethodsmaycorruptdriver
installationandresultinthedevicebecomingunusablewiththeinstallationPC.
PleasenotethatifWindows98GoldEditionisbeingused,youmusthaveallthelatestpatches
fromtheMicrosoftwebsiteinstalledforthesystemtobeUSBcompatible.

Ifadeviceofthesametypehasbeeninstalledonyourmachinebeforeandthedriversthat
areabouttobeinstalledaredifferentfromthoseinstalledalready,theoriginaldrivers
needtobeuninstalled.PleaserefertotheUninstalling

4.1. FT_CleanUtility
AprogramhasbeenwrittentoremoveregistryentriesandfilesrelatingtoPhocosdevicedrivers.
TheFT_CleanprogramgeneratesINIfilesfortheuninstallerappropriatetotheversionof
WindowsinstalledandrunstheuninstallerforeachINIfilegenerated.Nouserinputisrequired
fortheuninstallertorun.
Theprogramcanbeusedtoremoveasingledevice,aconsecutiverangeofdevicesoralldevices
withthesameVID.AmessageboxwillappeartoconfirmwhichVIDandPIDscombinationsare
goingtoberemoved.Asecondmessageboxwillprovideafinalchancetocancelthe
uninstallation.Themouseandkeyboardwillbedisabledforafewsecondswhiletheuninstaller
isrunning.
TheexamplebelowshowstheFT_CleanprogramconfiguredtoremovealldeviceswithaFTDI
VIDandPIDsbeginningwith60i.e.allPIDsfrom6000to60FFinclusive.AfourdigitPIDwill
removeasinglespecificdevicewhileleavingthePIDboxblankwillremovealldeviceswiththe
sameVID.
ThePhocosPIDisD360.
IncasesofproblemswithinstallingthePhocosCXIdrivertwicerunthisprogrammanddonot
enteraPID.TheProgrammcleansyourPCanthenstartagainwiththechapterIntallingthe
PhocosCXIdriver.

5. Troubleshooting
5.1. GeneralTroubleshooting
Thischapterincludesinformationoncommondifficultiesexperiencedwhentryingtoinstallthe
driver.Ifproblemsoccurwithyourdriverinstallation,pleaseconsultthissectionbefore
contactingPhocossupport.Iftheinformationherefailstoremedytheproblem,contactPhocos
supportwhowillattempttorectifythesituationasquicklyaspossible.

Windowsforcesarebootafterinstallingadevice
ThisproblemcanoccurifanapplicationisaccessingafilewhiletheNewHardwareWizardis
tryingtocopyit.Ifinstallingadevice,selectingnottorestartthecomputerthenunpluggingand
repluggingthedevicemayallowthedevicetofunctionproperlywithoutrestarting.Restarting
themachinewillallowthedevicetoworkcorrectly.

Windowscannotfinddriversformydevice
ThiserrorcanoccuriftheVIDandPIDprogrammedintothedeviceEEPROMdonotmatch
thoselistedinthedriverfiles.Orwhenanolddriverisallreadyinstalled.Whenthishappens,a
screensimilartothatshownbelowisdisplayed(screenshownfromWindows2000):

InthiscaseremovetheolddriverbyasdescripedintheChapterUninstallingPhocosCXI
IftheproblemstillexistsafrertheuninstallProgrammthenruntheFT_CleanProgramand
removeallolddrivers.AfterarebootyouwillbeabletoinstalltheCXIdriverasdescripedin
Chapter2.

Fileswiththe.catextensionaresignaturefilesissuedbyMicrosoftthatindicateadevicedriveris
WHQLcertified.Ifadriverisnotcertified,therewillbeno.catfilesavailable.
WheninstallingdriversinWindows98orWindowsME,theuserispromptedtolocatethe.cat
filesiftheoperatingsystemcannotfindthem.Ifthedriverisnotcertifiedbutyouwishtoinstall
itanyway,thefilesmaybeskippedbyclickingtheSkipbutton.

Windowscomplainsaboutmissingftccomms.vxdfile
ThiscanoccurwhentheUSBCompositedriverhasbeeninstallediftheuserhasnotbrowsedto
thelocationofthedriverfiles.Ifthismessageappears,donotskipitbutbrowsetothedriverfile
location.Thewizardwillthenbeabletocorrectlyinstallthedevice.

Ifthefollowingscreenisdisplayedwiththismessage,WindowsXPhasbeenconfiguredtoblock
theinstallationofanydriversthatarenotWHQLcertified.

Twooptionsareavailabletosuccessfullyinstallthedevice.Eitheracertifiedversionofthedriver
canbeinstalled(ifavailable)orthedriversigningoptionscanbechangedtoeitherwarnor
ignoretoallowtheinstallationtocomplete.
Tochangethecurrentdriversigningsetting,gotoControlPanel\System,clickonthe
HardwaretabandthenclickDriverSigning.Thedesiredsigningoptionmaythenbe
selected.
