URUGUAY STANDS OUT IN CRITICAL WORLD BANK REPORT Uruguay stands out as a good example of the World Banks investment helping forestry development in an audit report critical of the way the banks forest strategy is implemented globally. A draft copy of the report warns that expectations for poverty reduction as envisioned in the banks 2002 Forest Strategy have not yet been met. The report says the World Bank Group, through its policy advice, investments and guarantee, contributed to the development of the forestry sector in general, and to Uruguays economic development in particular. ARGENTINA CORRUPTION SCANDALS Two corruption scandals - one home grown and the other originating in Spain - are again highlighting the connections in Argentina between irregular investments, the misuse of environmental remediation projects for private gain, and plans that contribute to the degradation of natural resources. ARAUCOS ALTO PARANA APPEALING ARGENTINE TAX RULING Alto Paran S.A., the Argentine subsidiary of Chiles Arauco, says it will appeal against a court ruling regarding income tax during period between 2001 and 2004. A company statement said it had informed Argentinas National Securities Commission that is was notified of the sentence passed by the National Court of Appeals regarding the lawsuit originating from an adjustment made by the Argentinean National Treasury on the Sworn Declarations on Income Tax presented by Alto Paran within 2001 and 2004.

TASMANIAS EVER-CHANGING FOREST LAWS FRUSTRATE FARMERS Farmers in the Australian state of Tasmanian have told an inquiry into a peace planned to settle a dispute over internationally important forest use have said the legislation is getting worse with every change being made. The Farmers and Graziers Association says the bill failed to provide any certainty for private forest owners due to the changes. PRODUCT PRICES SLIP IN Q1, SAPPI SEES 2013 AS TRANSITIONAL South Africas Sappi Ltd has reported operating profit of US$73 million in the first quarter of the financial year ended December 2013, down 27 per cent on the same period of 2012. CEO Ralph Boettger said in a statement the groups performance was impacted by generally lower selling prices of pulp and paper. He described 2012 as an important transitional year as specialised pulp capacity expanded. NZ BIOENERGY GROUP WELCOMES GREENPEACES CLEAN ECONOMY PLAN The Bioenergy Association of New Zealand has welcomed a report by Greenpeace into the countrys ability to move to a new clean economy. In particular BANZ notes the report's emphasis on bioenergy as a means to achieving a clean energy future, noting such a move will both improve New Zealand's energy security and help improve our international economic competitiveness. SPAINS INAER HELICOPTERS IN CHILE FOREST FIREFIGHTING CAMPAIGN Spains INAER Helicopter Chile has this year reinforced its fleet of aircraft for the 2012-2013 firefighting campaign with helicopters from the 2012 summer campaign in Spain and Portugal. During the southern hemisphere summer, INAER maintained six operative bases throughout the country for fire prevention and fighting, with a fixed fleet composed of two Bell 407s, one Bell 412, a Eurocopter AS 350 B3 and two Kamov Ka-32s, and a team of qualified professionals with considerable firefighting experience. NZ OWNERS LIKELY TO FACE LEVY FOR FOREST HEALTH ACTION New Zealand forest plantations will be brought into a nationwide forest health surveillance scheme if a referendum of forest growers next month is successful, the Forest Owners Association said in a statement. "A yes vote in the referendum will see a small compulsory levy applied to harvested logs. Broadening the reach of the surveillance scheme will be one of the big benefits," Paul Nicholls, a Forest Growers Levy Trust board member, said in the statement. GUNNS GOES ROGUE AS TASMANIA PEACE DEAL GOES DOWN, REPORT Tasmania's forest peace deal inquiry has heard Australian timber company Gunns was 'going rogue' in the early days of the process, the ABC reported. The story reported industry agency representatives saying they had taken what one described as threatening phone calls to industry participants in peace talks around the Tasmanian Forests Agreement Bill. The agreement is designed to end the state's forest wars by protecting half a million hectares of trees from logging, a very damaging prospect for the big Australian timber group. SOUTH AFRICA LAUNCHES GREEN R&D INITIATIVE

South Africas Department of Environmental Affairs and the Development Bank of Southern Africa have called for research and policy-development project proposals within its R34-million green research and development initiative, Engineering News reported. The parties, through the newly formed Green Fund, aimed to advance green economy research and policy development to support South Africas transition to a greener economy, the report said. ANTS ON THE RUN AS FORESTS HIT BY BIG DRY A Curtin University Professor, Jonathan Majer, says decreased rainfall in the forests of south west Australia may be responsible for disappearing ant species, the Australian has reported. "We think the forest has become a more hostile environment for cryptic ants that like moist leaf litter and shady shrub layers. The litter and shade are starting to disappear. There's nowhere for the ants to go because land is drying out around them, the report quoted his as saying. HOLLYWOOD AWARDS LINKS TO PLANT FOREST IN CHILEAN PATAGONIA The US-based Screen Actors Guild Awards says it is expanding efforts to further reduce its carbon footprint thanks to a unique reforestation partnership with Chiles Patagonia Sur, a for-profit conservation company founded by American entrepreneur.
