BUDDHA: If there is only empty space, with no suns nor planets in it, then space loses its substantiality. Einstein and Buddha Parallell Quotations EINSTEIN: Physical concepts are free creations of the human mind, and are not, h owever it may seem, uniquely determined by the external world. BUDDHA: All such notions as causation, succession, atoms, primary elements...are all figments of the imagination and manifestations of the mind. Einstein and Buddha Parallell Quotations EINSTEIN: Time and again the passion for understanding has led to the illusion t hat man is able to comprehend the objective world rationally by pure thought wit hout any empirical foundations in short, by metaphysics. BUDDHA: By becoming attached to names and forms, not realising that they have no more basis than the activities of the mind itself, error rises and the way to e mancipation is blocked. Einstein and Buddha Parallell Quotations EINSTEIN: In our thinking...we attribute to this concept of the bodily object a significance, which is to high degree independent of the sense impression which originally gives rise to it. This is what we mean when we attribute to the bodil y object "a real existence." ...By means of such concepts and mental relations b etween them, we are able to orient ourselves in the labyrinth of sense impressio ns. These notions and relations...appear to us as stronger and more unalterable than the individual sense experience itself, the character of which as anything other than the result of an illusion or hallucination is never completely guaran teed. BUDDHA: I teach that the multitudinousness of objects have no reality in themsel ves but are only seen of the mind and, therefore, are of the nature of maya and a dream. ...It is true that in one sense they are seen and discriminated by the senses as individualized objects; but in another sense, because of the absence o f any characteristic marks of self-nature, they are not seen but are only imagin ed. In one sense they are graspable, but in another sense, they are not graspabl e. Einstein and Buddha Parallell Quotations EINSTEIN: The belief in an external world independent of the perceiving subject is the basis of all natural science. Since, however, sense perception only gives information of this external world or of "physical reality" indirectly, we can only grasp the latter by speculative means. It follows from this that our notion s of physical reality can never be final. We must always be ready to change thes e notions that is to say, the axiomatic basis of physics in order to do justice to perceived facts in the most perfect way logically.

BUDDHA: While the Tathagata, in his teaching, constantly makes use of conception s and ideas about them, disciples should keep in mind the unreality of all such conceptions and ideas. They should recall that the Tathagata, in making use of t hem in explaining the Dharma always uses them in the semblance of a raft that is of use only to cross a river. As the raft is of no further use after the river is crossed, it should be discarded. So these arbitrary conceptions of things and about things should be wholly given up as one attains enlightenment. Dalai Lama As human beings we all want to be happy and free from misery. We have learned that the key to happiness is inner peace. The greatest obstacles to inner peace are disturbing emotions such as

anger and attachment, fear and suspicion, while love and compassion, a sense of universal responsibility are the sources of peace and happiness. Dalai Lama The whole purpose of religion is to facilitate love and compassion, patience, tolerance, humility, forgiveness. Be refuges unto yourselves. Take yourself no external refuge. Hold fast to the truth as a lamp. Hold fast to the truth as a refuge. Look not for a refuge in anyone besides yourselves. And those, Ananda, who either now or after I am dead, Shall be a lamp unto themselves, Shall betake themselves as no external refuge, But holding fast to the truth as their lamp, Holding fast to the truth as their refuge, Shall not look for refuge to anyone else besides themselves, It is they who shall reach to the very topmost height; But they must be anxious to learn." The Four Reliances, Traditional Buddhist teaching First, rely on the spirit and meaning of the teachings, not on the words; Second, rely on the teachings,

not on the personality of the teacher; Third, rely on real wisdom, not superficial interpretation; And fourth, rely on the essence of your pure Wisdom Mind, not on judgmental perceptions. from One Minute Wisdom by Anthony DeMello The disciples were absorbed in a discussion of Lao-tzu's dictum: "Those who know, do not say; Those who say, do not know." When the master entered, they asked him what the words meant. Said the master, "Which of you knows the fragrance of a rose?" All of them indicated that they knew. Then he said, "Put it into words." All of them were silent. from the Dhammapada, Words of the Buddha There is no fire like greed, No crime like hatred, No sorrow like separation, No sickness like hunger of heart, And no joy like the joy of freedom. Health, contentment and trust Are your greatest possessions, And freedom your greatest joy. Look within. Be still. Free from fear and attachment, Know the sweet joy of living in the way. Siddh rtha Gautama " "Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense."

Allan Lokos, Patience: The Art of Peaceful Living "That's why it's called a practice. We have to practice a practice if it is to b e of value." Swami Satchidananda, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali "The five points of yama, together with the five points of niyama, remind us of the Ten Commandments of the Christtian and Jewish faiths, as well as of the ten virtues of Buddhism. In fact, there is no religion without these moral or ethica l codes. All spiritual life should be based on these things. They are the founda tion stones without which we can never build anything lasting. (127)" Aberjhani, The River of Winged Dreams " "An outrageous instinct to love and be loved blinded your arms to lines of pro priety Women and Men, Christians and Jews, Muslims and Buddhists, white, black, red, br own. An outrageous instinct to love and be loved executed your brain every hour on the hour." Mircea Eliade, Yoga: Immortality and Freedom "States of consciousness" are only products of prakriti and can have no kind of relation with Spirit the latter, by its very essence, being above all experience . However and for SamPhya and Yoga this is the key to the paradoxical situation the most subtle, most transparent part of mental life, that is, intelligence (bu ddhi) in its mode of pure luminosity (sattva), has a specific quality that of re flecting Spirit. Comprehension of the external world is possible only by virtue of this reflection of purusha in intelligence. But the Self is not corrupted by this reflection and does not lose its ontological modalities (impassibility, ete rnity, etc.). The Yoga-sutras (II, 20) say in substance: seeing (drashtri; i.e., purusha) is absolute consciousness ("sight par excellence") and, while remainin g pure, it knows cognitions (it "looks at the ideas that are presented to it"). Vyasa interprets: Spirit is reflected in intelligence (buddhi), but is neither l ike it nor different from it. It is not like intelligence because intelligence i s modified by knowledge of objects, which knowledge is ever-changing whereas pur usha commands uninterrupted knowledge, in some sort it is knowledge. On the othe r hand, purusha is not completely different from buddhi, for, although it is pur e, it knows knowledge. Patanjali employs a different image to define the relatio nship between Spirit and intelligence: just as a flower is reflected in a crysta l, intelligence reflects purusha. But only ignorance can attribute to the crysta l the qualities of the flower (form, dimensions, colors). When the object (the f lower) moves, its image moves in the crystal, though the latter remains motionle ss. It is an illusion to believe that Spirit is dynamic because mental experienc e is so. In reality, there is here only an illusory relation (upadhi) owing to a "sympathetic correspondence" (yogyata) between the Self and intelligence." Dalai Lama XIV, How to Practice : The Way to a Meaningful Life "True change is within; leave the outside as it is." Koren Zailckas, Fury: A Memoir "There's a limit to my patience with anything that smacks of metaphysics. I squi rm at the mention of "mind expansion" or "warm healing energy." I don't like dru m circles, public nudity or strangers touching my feet." Allan Lokos, Patience: The Art of Peaceful Living "So what is a good meditator? A good meditator meditates."

Donna Quesada, The Buddha in the Classroom: Zen Wisdom to Inspire Teachers "When you blame, you open up a world of excuses, because as long as you're looki ng outside, you miss the opportunity to look inside, and you continue to suffer. " Anne Cushman "As I explore the wilderness of my own body, I see that I am made of blood and b ones, sunlight and water, pesticide residues and redwood humus, the fears and dr eams of generations of ancestors, particles of exploded stars." Tara Brach, Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha "Pain is not wrong. Reacting to pain as wrong initiates the trance of unworthine ss. The moment we believe something is wrong, our world shrinks and we lose ours elves in the effort to combat the pain." Mike Norton "War can condition a person to be resilient, tolerant, dependable, strong, and c apable of so much more than one who had experienced nothing of it; it can bring out the very best in us, but also the very worst. Where is it, I ask, the proper conduit through which a soldier should be raised from whence they would become an upstanding citizen of the world, instead of a single country?" Mahatma Gandhi "Yes I am, I am also a Muslim, a Christian, a Buddhist, and a Jew." Donna Quesada, The Buddha in the Classroom: Zen Wisdom to Inspire Teachers "When you catch yourself slipping into a pool of negativity, notice how it deriv es from nothing other than resistance to the current situation." Donna Quesada, The Buddha in the Classroom: Zen Wisdom to Inspire Teachers "Courage is often associated with aggression, but instead should be seen as a wi llingness to act from the heart."
