I gave my questionnaire to ten people, nine of which were of the age group 10-20, none of them were over 15. One person who lled out the questionnaire was of the age range 40-50. My questionnaire was conducted entirely in the beacon school, with 9 students and one member of staff taking this survey.

These places are reasonably close together. The environment in which these people live are implied through these locations: working to middle class. This is because these locations are places where those members of society are likely to inhabit. Of course, this cannot be afrmed without asking a possible offensive question regarding nancial situation. There are many places in Banstead or Epsom or Tadworth where a neighborhood may be particularly wealthy or not so well off. However, it does give an idea as to how their backgrounds are in essence.

These answers are to be expected, this is because the questionnaire was conducted in a comprehensive school which involves a sixth form. Therefore, the majority of the people who were asked to complete the questionnaire were students. One person answered both student and worker at Marks and Spencer. From this, I can ascertain that the students asked are starting to delve into the world of work. The demographic I have mainly reached in this questionnaire are a then young adults of the age 16-18. They are beginning to gain the maturity which accompanies the status of being a student and thus young adult. The member of staff who conducted this questionnaire is less signicant than the demographic which through these rst three questions I have began to derive from the audience.

The majority of my participants say that they watch the lms often; this is to be expected due to the mass appeal that lm brings. This research displays that there is a large audience for movies. Question 3: What is your favorite genre? Circle the answer. (multiple circles were allowed). 4

The most popular genre in this questionnaire was that of Horror. This is a popular genre amongst young adults, this can be told through these results. A mistake I evidently made in this questionnaire was not incorporating the popular genre Comedy in my question. The joint second most popular answer on this question was the genre Drama, which is a a generally open genre, which also contains many social realism lms. However, it is suggested by my participants genre preferences that they are interested in suspense and cinematic experience provoked by horror. Question 6: What is your understanding of the genre Social Realism? People who took this questionnaire knew little about the term social realism. A number of people who took the survey did know sufcient information about Social Realism.Common responses to this question were short, commenting on the portrayal of real world and saying it how it is. These responses capture the basic premise of Social Realisms aims to depict life as it is, though do not demonstrate a sturdy knowledge of the genre. Responses that demonstrate that a lack of knowledge for the genre guess at Social Realism as being a genre wishing to depict an event which actually happens, others simply state: I dont know. The words I assume in one participants answer also demonstrates a lack of certainty as to the nature of the genre. I wrote this question with hopes of ascertaining whether or not Social Realism is a genre which is rmly in a public consciousness. These answers generally suggest that in fact Social Realism is not strongly in the consciousness of the average student. I am therefore required to question their ability to be a secondary audience. Question 7: are you aware of any of these lms? Tick if you are aware and circle if you have seen them. Film list: Another Year- Ticked once Kes- circled once, Ticked once This is England- Ticked ve times. My Name is Joe- Ticked once Bullet Boy- Ticked once. Tyrannosaur- Ticked three times. This shows to me that people are more aware of Social Realism lms than the genre. They are also more aware of the lms than they have watched them, as only one person who took the questionnaire had actually watched a lm from the list. Through this question I wanted to gain an idea as to how many lms that my participants had heard of and perhaps watched. The most famous one was apparently This is England, which is not surprising.

Question 8: Do you believe there is a gap in the market for British Independent cinema in Mainstream Cinema? Yes 8 6 4 2 0 No

Participants

Almost all participants agreed that there was a gap in the market for British Independent cinema. By this, I am told that there is an awareness to lm of lesser production and commercial value and that people think that there is a gap in the market for such lms. This paves the way for the next question regarding the participants personal opinions of British Independent cinema. Question Nine: Are you interested in British independent Cinema, if so: in which Yes 6 4.5 3 1.5 0 Participants No

ways could it be made more accessible? Quantitative and Qualitative

Results of the yes or no question demonstrate a lack of interest in British Independent Cinema. Answers of the questions regarding accessibility were few and far between, lled out mainly with the words I dont know or left blank. Those who did answer the question commented on the importance of awareness and the expansion of facilities with which they could be consumed: More Screenings in Cinemas, put them on youtube. Other

comments regard making people more aware of them. There are possible reasons behind this: perhaps it is that the participants have seen an independent lm and not liked it. Perhaps it is a general lack of interest through the exposure of a new genre, thus requiring the adjusting to the new ideas presented. In addition, this may suggest However, this does tell me that although there is a niche audience in students for these kinds of lms, there is not enough to constitute a primary audience, I have learned through this that the student could perhaps form the basis of a secondary audience. To hopefully nd my presumed primary audience, I am going to now look into movie websites such as MUBI, where fans of the genre apparently thrive.
