GENERAL INFORMATION
SEVILLA
Seville is located in the southwest of the
Iberian Península, in the heart of the Autonomous
Region of Andalusía. As capital of Andalusía, it is
the fourth largest city in Spain with a population of
705.000 inhabitants within the metroplitan area.
The total population of some 105 tows within the
province reaches 1.800.000 inhabitants who are
spread out overa n area of 14.042 km2. Seville is
considered without doubt, the artistic, cultutral,
finacial, economic and social centre of southern
Spain.
Situated just 6 meters above sea level
on the banks of Guadalquivir River, the urban
centre extends towards the towns of Aljarafe, las
Marismas (salt marshes), the Doñana Nacional
Park and Sierra Sur mountains.

ANDALUCÍA
Seville is the capital of the Andalusian Autonomous Region, which is situated in the southern part of the
Iberian Peninsula, what gives her a warm and nice weather during almost the whole year.
This situation has helped Andalusia, throughout the centuries, to welcome several cultures that, from
the Prehistory, have chosen her as a place to li ve, as did the Phoenicians, Arabs and Romans, among
others.
This cross of cultures is shown in every spect that Andalusia offers to her visitors, Besides, together
with emblematics monuments of the Islamic architecture such as the Giralda tower in Seville, the Mosque in
Cordoba and the Alhambra palace in Granada, you find numerous Renaissance and Baroque constructions,
outstanding churches, monasteries, fortresses, etc. These are some of the best known treasures of a region
whose countless monuments bring to the present memories of the past.
Furthermore, Andalucia offers a diverse landscape full of contrasts, with such different shapes as her
wide coasts. Long beaches of fine sand and dunes on the Atlantic coast combine with beaches surrounded
by mountains and rocky landscape bathed by the calm and warm waters of the Mediterranean coast.
Her rich mountainous territory ranges from the white hogh peaks of Sierra Nevada mountains to the
volcanic landscape of the Tabernas dessert, and offers a great variety of fauna and flora.
Her monumental richness, her beaches and mountains, together with the light and warm weather that
Andalucia enjoys all over the year, have allowed her to develop an extensive tourist and leisure offer and have
made her become a modern egion, with important infrastructures.
Andalucía is in the van of the progress while carefully keeps her roots and maintains her inherited
monumental and cultural heritage.

GUADALQUIVIR RIVER
The Guadalquivir River has placed an
important role noy only in the History of Sevillee,
but also in the History od Spain. It has been the
access gate for the different cultures that have
settled here. It has even placed a leading role
in Duch important moments as the Discovery of
the New World, in time of Christopher Columbus,
when it became the entrante port for all the trade
coming from America.
This important role has been parallel to its
own History since, as it is navigable by big draft
ships, keeps being a very important harbor for
goods transportation.

But the Guadalquivir river is also a priviliged

place for the practice of aquatic sports, and specially
for the practice of Canoeing and Rowing, thanks to
the factors concurring in it: its high quality level, the
warm weather and is location on the city center.
Therefore, it is the site for important sports events
such as the LEN Long Distance European Swimming
Cup, the Internacional Triathlón Ciudad de Sevilla or
the Andalucía Internacional Rowing Regatta.
The conditions of this basin have changed and
improved a lot from the beginning of the History of this
sport. The location of a permanent Regatta course in
the Cartuja island from 1992 and the characteristics of the High Performance Centre for Rowing and
Canoeing, as well as the opening of a Residence for athletes, are the reason why rowers from all around
the World come to the Guadalquivr river to train. These are also the reasons why the river has become the
site for the most important sports events at national and international level.

SPECIALIZING HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTRE LA CARTUJA

The Specializing High Performance Centre for Rowing and Canoeing of La Cartuja was built to mark
the Universal Exhibition Sevilla 1992 with the aim to host training camps of foreing teams and use the river
with a sporting end.
Nowadays, we are used the seeing rowers from the different countries sailing the Guadalquivir River
These facilities have aldo been the site for major competitions in our city. In 1990 and 1991 two canoe
internacional regattas were held in the Guadalquivir river which meant the starting signal for more than 45
international 130 national and more than
250 regional events.
At internacional level, the Quailifying
Regatta for the Canoe Olympic Games
Atlante 96, the consolidated rowing
regatta Internationa Andalucía-FISA
Team Cup, the FISA Masters Rowing
Regatta held in 1999, which brought
together mopre than 2600 rowers,
or the Rowing and Canoeing Worlds
Cup in 1991 are to be highlighted, and
the Worldrowing championship and
worldcanoeing championship in 2002.
As time has gone by, these facilites
have been improved and in 2000 the
Sporting Residence was oponed with a
232 beds capacity. Furthermore, wich
makes it be one the best facilites in the
World.
