AMPLUS LTD METHOD STATEMENT - TRIAL PITS METHOD OF EXCAVATION - MACHINE

GENERAL

Trial pits will be marked out and their locations agreed with the Engineer. No instruction will be given for each individual pit unless specific technical variation from the specification adopted for the works is required. 1. Positions and access routes will be agreed with the Engineer/Client. 2. Underground Services location plans made available by the Client/Engineer will be viewed, pits will be located to avoid such services. A Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) will be used to identify the location of underground services. 3. Each location would be fenced using 'Heras' or similar fencing to protect the general public/vehicles, suitably screened where splashing is considered a problem. 4. A permit to dig will be issued by the Engineer before excavating. Machine Excavated Pits 5. Mechanical excavator provided by sub-contractor with suitably qualified operator. Breaker, when required, to be used in accordance with manufacturer specification - site operatives to have ear and eye protection if working near to breaking. 6. Pits will be excavated to required depth and size using a mechanical excavator with backhoe supervised by a qualified engineer trained in-house in aspects of Health and Safety. 7. All equipment to be in good working condition. 8. PPE will be worn in accordance with site classification and will include but not limited to hard hat, protective footwear, disposable and cotton overalls, gloves and protective eyewear and face mask. 9. Trial pits will be excavated vertically from surface. No entry is to be made into the pit. Work to be done by experienced operatives trained in-house in aspects of Health and Safety. 10. Sampling carried out in pit if appropriate. Logging and sampling undertaken from the surface level only. 11. Backfilling in layers, well compacted with blows of the excavator bucket up to 300mm from surface. Any large builders to be placed in base, or lower in pit. Surfaces to be reinstated in accordance with the Public Services Specification. 12. Management of Arisings: As a general principle, it is our intention to minimise the quantity of both liquid and solid waste taken off site. As far as is practical, anything removed from excavated holes should preferably be returned to the same location.

'Clean' arisings, i.e. surface paving materials, will be set aside and sent for disposal at La Collette in the normal manner. All other arisings are to be laid on the high side of trial pits where slopes are present to allow any slurry to run back in to the pit. Sufficient sand bags will be placed around each hole to prevent surface run off into surrounding areas. Trial pits will be terminated at groundwater level, therefore no significant amounts of surplus water are anticipated at the surface.
