I really want students to understand the models that they are applying to these problems. I feel that drawing it out is way harder for students than "doing it" as they seem to think memorizing mnemonics is true math. It gets students thinking laterally about mathematics, and translating something concrete into something abstract.

So we all know its importance. We all understand that students learn more when they do it. The problem is how to facilitate it. It is getting students to talk mathematically. As a teacher, you cant really say ok kiddos, work on this thing together and I WANT TO HEAR THAT MATH TALK. Well, maybe you can, but Im not able to. I have to be more insidious, more conniving, more sneaky to get my students using mathematical vocabulary and verbalizing mathematical arguments.
