Module 02 Updating the IP-Phone firmware Lecture

2010. All rights reserved.

135

IP Phones
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to: Describe the boot procedure of an 9600- and 1600-series IP telephone S8500C media server Load new software to a 9600-series or 1600-series IP telephone Install MV_IPTel File Server on a PC Use MV_IPTel File Server to load new software to a 9600- or 1600-series IP telephone Describe the functionality of the 46xxsettings.txt file

2010. All rights reserved.

136

Boot procedure
When installing an IP telephone, it is helpful if you know what is happening during the boot procedure: S8500C the IP server When it is powered on, or when a manual reset is performed, mediatelephone undergoes a short start-up phase. During this process, the telephone checks whether an application file is already present in its non-volatile memory. If the application file is found, it is loaded to volatile memory and takes over control. If no application file is found, the boot code is loaded to volatile memory, and this then takes over control. The application or boot code file initializes the IP telephone for the entry of manual boot parameters or for obtaining boot data from a DHCP server.

2010. All rights reserved.

137

Boot procedure (cont.)

DHCP If the IP telephone does not use a manually-entered IP address, then within 30 S8500C media server seconds after powering on or a hard reset, the DHCP DISCOVER procedure starts. The DHCP-DISCOVER message is passed either to the default VLAN or to the VLAN defined in the telephone's non-volatile VLAN parameter. Four packets are sent during this procedure:
DHCP Discover from the telephone as a broadcast packet - DHCP offer from the server as a unicast packet to the MAC address of the IP telephone or as a relay agent to the MAC address of the IP telephone - DHCP request from the telephone as a broadcast packet - DHCP ACK from the server as a unicast packet to the MAC address of the IP telephone or as a relay agent to the MAC address of the IP telephone

138

Boot procedure (cont.)

DHCP options The DCHP specification provides for options that are numbered from 0 to 255. Each S8500C media server option represents specific information that is to be sent to the client. For example, option 1 represents the subnet mask and is used to send the subnet mask to the client. Other standard options provide the following information for the IP telephone:
-

IP address Subnet mask Default gateway IP address DNS server addresses DNS domains

DHCP option 242 Options 128 to 254 are site-specific option numbers (SSONs). Avaya IP telephones use the site-specific option 242 for the 9600- and 1600-seriesS8500C media server 4600IP phones (option 176 for series IP phones) to receive certain parameters from the DHCP server. If the telephone has been programmed with options 242/176, the DHCP server can provide the following information:
HTTP server IP address - The IP addresses of the H.323 gatekeeper (CLAN, S8300 or Processor Ethernet of a Server) - UDP port (1719) for registration - 802.1Q VLAN ID (tag)

DHCP option 242 (cont.) At Avaya, options 242/176 are defined as using character strings. The character strings S8500C media server contain comma-separated parameters and values. A typical 242/176 option could look like the following: MCIPADD=addr1,addr2,addr3,MCPORT=1719,HTTPSRVR=addr
MCIPADD is the IP address(es) of the gatekeeper. - MCPORT is the port number of the gatekeeper (default: 1719). - HTTPSRVR is the IP address of the HTTP server in the customer network for IP device download.
-

If a DHCP server in the default VLAN does not provide an appropriate response to the options, the IP telephone installation process cannot be completed.

Boot procedure (cont.)

HTTP server In the next stage of the process, the IP telephone requests the required data for a S8500C media server software update. A configuration file is also loaded, with which further settings can be sent to the IP telephone. Extension and password The telephone requests entry of the extension number and password if these values are not stored or the stored values do not match the settings in Communication Manager. Registration with the gatekeeper In the next stage, the IP telephone uses the RAS section (registration, admission, status) of the H.225 call signaling protocol to perform registration with the gatekeeper. A gatekeeper is a H.323 device in the network that takes care of address translation and controls network access for H.323 end points. The gatekeeper can be a S8300 server, aTN799 CLAN circuit pack or the Processor Ethernet of a server.

Registration with the gatekeeper (cont.) Four types of packet are sent. These can be recorded by a protocol analyzer:
RAS gatekeeper request from the telephone to the gatekeeper - RAS gatekeeper confirm from the gatekeeper to the telephone - RAS registration request from the telephone to the gatekeeper
-

S8500C media server

RAS registration confirm from the gatekeeper to the telephone

An IP telephone can be provided with a gatekeeper list to which it sends the initial RAS gatekeeper request (GRQ). The gatekeeper list is provided with the DHCP options 242/176. In the string used for DHCP options 242/176, the comma-separated IP addresses following the MCIPADD parameter represent the gatekeeper list. This list allows redundancy in the boot procedure. If a specific gatekeeper is not available, the telephone attempts the other gatekeepers in the list.

H.225 signaling protocol The H.225 signaling protocol is the component for endpoint registration (RAS) and call S8500C media server signaling (Q.931) of H.323. Once the IP telephone has successfully registered with a gatekeeper, it opens a TCP session with the gatekeeper and sends a H.225 setup message that the gatekeeper answers with a H.225 Call Proceeding and H.225 Connect message. The telephone is ready for operation.

Software Download Overview

The 9600-series and 1600-series IP telephones load their software via a file server available in the network. HTTPS and HTTP protocol is used for the file server. The IP address of the file server is to be communicated to the IP phone in its network configuration. If no IP address is entered or the file server is unavailable, the IP phone operates with the last software (stored in the phones flash memory). Software packages for 9600-series and 1600-series IP telephones are downloadable from the Internet at http://support.avaya.com.
