2. What was the role of the Church in peoples lives?

The Church was the most important part in people's lives. They controlled whether or not you went to heaven. They taught people new things and had lots of influence. For example: the Catholic church was so big and influential that the Pope crowned kings and queens of countries. Huge cathedrals were built during the Middle Ages because the church wanted to show off how powerful they were. They also wanted to be able to fit more people inside so that they could make more tithes and they wanted to show that someone important worked there because a cathedral could not be considered a cathedral unless a bishop worked there.

The Duomo Cathedral is beautiful. The carvings on the outsides are incredible. The designs of the stained glass windows are ourstanding. The designs, carvings and paintings on the inside are incredible. The thought it took to do all of this is mind-blowing. A pilgrimage is a journey to place that is sacred for religious beliefs. The book Canterbury Tales is about a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The person who wrote the book was Geoffrey Chaucer. The 7 Sacraments are Baptism, Communion, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick. They are important because they are special occasions for experiencing God's saving presence.
