CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION In studying English, there are many things to be known in advance. One of them is part of the spoken word or in English is called Part of Speech. In English grammar,Parts of Speech are classified into eight types of words are classified according to what he showed the Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection. But in this paper will only discuss aboutadverb only, in accordance with a predeterminedscop.

CHAPTER II

CONTENTS

1. DEFINITION OF ADVERB An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, another adverb, a phrase, or a clause. An adverb indicates manner, time, place, cause, or degree and answers questions such as "how," "when," "where," "how much". Example : Please sit here. ( The adverb here modifies the verb "sit" ) She is very happy. (The adverb very modifies the adjective "happy" ) He laughed very loudly. (The adverb very modifies the the adverb loudly, which modifies the verb "laughed" ) 2. KINDS OF ADVERBS Adverbs are used to tell time (when), place (where), reason (why), manner (how), degree (how much), to what extent and frequency (how often). a. Adverb of Time The adverbs are used to tell time. Example : They will leave soon. I am studying English now. b. Adverb of Place The adverbs are used to tell place. Example : She still lives there now. He will wait here. c. Adverb of Manner The adverbs are used to tell manner Example : The boys played well. They worked hard. 2

d. Adverb of Degree The adverbs are used to tell degree Example : They were quite satisfied. She is very pretty girl. e. Adverb of Frequency The adverbs are used to tell frequency 1. Adverb of Quantity. According to this adverb, usually we use "how often. Example : Andi always drink milk every night. She is never late. 2. Adverb of Number. According to this adverb, usually we use "how many times". Example : He eats twice every day. I smoke once in a day. f. Adverb of Affirmation The adverbs are used to tell affirmation or certainty. Example : Of course she can speak English. Surely I have gone to Bandung. g. Interrogative Adverb The adverbs are used to tell interrogative Sentences. Example : How did he go ? (interrogative adverb of manner) Where do you go ? (interrogative adverb of place)

3. FORMING ADVERB Many adverbs are formed from adjectives, with the addition of suffix "ly". Example : Adverbs busily greatly happily quietly slowly happily softly 4. ADVERBS IN COMPARISON Adverbs like adjectives generally have three degrees of comparison : positive, comparative and superlative in similar ways. A. Some one-syllable adverbs have "-er" and "-est" added to the positive form Example : Superlative Comparative Positive fastest faster fast hardest harder hard highest higher high lowest lower low B. Adverbs of two or more syllables generally have "more and "most" placed before the positive Example : Superlative most attentively Comparative more attentively Positive attentively generousl y impatienly quickly Adjectives busy great happy quiet slow happy soft

CHAPTER III CLOSING Adverb as one part of the spoken word (Parts of Speech) in English grammar is one of many things that should be known in learning English. Adverf is a word that describes verbs, adjectives and other words except nouns and pronouns. There are various forms of adverbs are categorized by function or use. By knowing the adverb, good shape, meaning and application is expected to be one of the capital in learning English language properly and correctly.
