Kolkata, In a bid to combat the increasing environmental pollution

and the escalating petrol and diesel prices, the West Bengal
Renewal Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) has hit upon a
Monthly News Archives unique and not so noisy plan. The WBREDA is all set to launch
four types of battery-operated vehicles — a car, a three-wheeler,
a two-wheeler and a bicycle.
May 2006
April 2006 Mrinal Banerjee, minister for power, NES and labour, formally
March 2006 launched the four vehicles today at the Energy Education Park
February 2006 near EM Bypass. Also present was the director of WBREDA, S P
January 2006 Gon Chaudhuri.

In order to boost the sales of these battery-operated vehicles the

state government is ready to offer a subsidy to all interested
customers.

“We are aware of the problem of environmental pollution in the

city. We are hit by the rising petrol and diesel prices. This, I think,
would be a good substitute for the vehicles running on petroleum
and diesel. We are also in the process of introducing bio-diesel
and hydrogen-operated vehicles. Many companies have
approached us asking if they can set up bio-diesel plants,” said
Chaudhuri.

“In order to rev up the sales of these new vehicles we’ve decided
to give a subsidy to the customers. The marketing and promotion
of these vehicles will be done by two companies - one from
Kolkata and the other from Siliguri. Customers will be more
interested if they can purchase the new vehicles at a subsidised
rate,” said Banerjee. There are plans to launch 200 vehicles of
each type in the market within a short period. “This is
experimental. If the first 800 pieces are well received then we will
introduce more cars in the market,” said Banerjee.

The cars are completely battery-operated, do not emit smoke and

are noiseless. The bicycles will be available for Rs 12,000 each
but customers will be given a discount of Rs 5,000. The two-
wheeler will be available for Rs 26,000 to Rs 27,000 along with a
subsidy of Rs 5,000. The three-wheeler scooter comes for Rs
2,60,000 but customers can purchase it at a subsidised rate of Rs
1,60,000. The cars are priced at Rs 3,15,000 and Rs 3,60,000 for
the air-conditioned ones. However, the manufacturers plan to
offer a subsidy of Rs 15,000 on them.

The two companies handling the marketing of the vehicles are

APJ Projects in Kolkata and Asis Wiz from Siliguri. “We also plan
to run ads in newspapers to attract customers and
companies,”said Chaudhuri.
