Prof. Dr. Michael Hahn, *7.5.1941 in Otterndorf (Niedersachsen), Germany Academic career: studied at the universities of Gttingen, Marburg and Bonn, first science, psychology and musicology (B.A. in psychology in 1964), then Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese and Mongolian under Gustav Roth, Ernst Waldschmidt, Wilhelm Rau, Claus Vogel and Walter Heissig ; Ph. D. 1967 at the University of Marburg with a thesis on Jnarmitra's metrical treatise Vttamlstuti; 1968-1972 assistant professor at the University of Hamburg under Ludwig Alsdorf and Franz Bernhard; 1972 D. Litt. with a second thesis on Candragomin's Buddhist play Loknandanaka; 1972 assistant professor and reader at the University of Bonn; 1982 promotion to associate professor; 1.10.1988 full professor at the University of Marburg; emeritus since 1.10.2007. Temporary appointments: 1976-1980 visiting professor of Tibetan at the University of Marburg; 1978-1979 local director of the Nepal-German Manuscript Preservation Project in Kathmandu, Nepal; 1981 research fellow at the Reiyukai Library (later: The International Institute for Buddhist Studies; now: The International College for Postgraduate Buddhist Studies); 1984-5 visiting professor at the Waseda University, Tokyo; 1991 holder of the Numata Chair of Buddhist Studies at the University of Calgary, Canada; 2001 holder of the Numata Chair of Buddhist Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Great Britain; 2005 holder of the Numata Chair of Buddhist Studies at the Department of Buddhist Studies, University of California, Berkeley, USA; 2005, 2006 and 2007 Numata Fellow of Ryukoku University Kyoto; 2009 holder of the Numata Chair of Buddhist Studies at the Department of South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies, University of Vienna (Austria) Main fields of research: the classical Sanskrit literature (ornate poetry, drama, didactic literature); Indian metric; Buddhist literature (Madhyamaka philosophy, didactic works, narrative literature); Tibetan linguistics and literature; Mongolian and Chinese translations of the Indian Buddhist texts. Other scholarly activities: Participation in numerous national and international conferences; guest lectures at various universities and institutes; about 100 papers or lectures read at these occasions. Publications: 18 monographs and 100 papers between 1970 and 2009 Editorship: Editor and publisher of the series Indica et Tibetica; more than 50 vols. published between 1982 and 2008.

Supervision of theses: 11 M.A. theses and 16 Ph.D. theses on various indological and tibetological topics between 1974 and 2008. 4 more Ph. D. theses are currently under preparation.
