I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 91st EDA Convention in historical Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Our Council for Conventions has done an outstanding job putting together a wonderful conference. As you look through the program, you will find great programs and activities. There is something for everyone. Along with the convention programs, please take the time to join them as they receive these awards and give their lectures. It has been my honor to serve as your President this past year. We all are aware of the trials facing us and our programs. My theme of Are We Up to PAR? Professionalism, Advocacy and Relevance was chosen to remind us that we are in control of our fate. How we are perceived and the impact we have on our clientele is directly affected by our professionalism, how we advocate for our programs and positions and not allowing ourselves to be viewed as irrelevant. We are leaders in the fight for healthy lifestyles. Our present and future are in our hands. Please bear this in mind as you attend the various programs and activities. Please enjoy yourself. Take advantage of this historic area. There will be a trip to the Valley Forge National Park, and we are minutes away from King of Prussia. Catch up with old friends and, hopefully, make some new ones. Please come up and introduce yourself, if I dont already know you. People who attend our conferences serve as role models for our profession. Have a GREAT conference! John G. Helion

Ms. Janice arnold, Maryland Janice Jan Arnold is one of the true greats in health education. During her 38 years as an educator with Anne Arundel County Public Schools, the last 10 as the Health Resource Teacher, she has been an outstanding leader and a model advocate for health and physical education. She has also touched hundreds of young lives through her many years of coaching. While she presents a quiet modest front, Jan is one our most effective long term leaders at the state and district level. She has served the Eastern District Association as Vice President of Health, a member of the Council for Services and Council of Conventions and on the Credentials and Elections Committee. For those who remember the smoothly executed highly successful Baltimore EDAAAHPERD Convention (2006), it will come as no surprise that Jan was a member of the local planning committee. In her home state of Maryland, Jan has served as President of MAHPERD, Vice President of Health, served on numerous committees and has been one of four key people to participate in every step of the review process for the Maryland state curriculum for health education. She has also been a valuable leader for Anne Arundel county including creating their wellness policy. Anne Arundel is regularly referred to as a model program. Her most recent accomplishment is that of being hired by the Maryland State Department of Education where she will serve in the Health Education Specialists office. Walter Lee III says of Jan, Ms. Arnold brings passion and purpose to the Health Field. She spearheads initiatives that are not only good for students but good for the community as a whole. Her conviction to comprehensive health education is paralleled by none. She makes opportunities for others to learn of its importance and volunteers to make sure she is on decision-making committees that affect the way in which health is delivered in our system. Brian Griffith says it all when he writes, A true leader is someone that can accomplish a task without being seen. They assemble a diverse group but are willing to do any task to guarantee success. A leader is willing to step up when no one else will. Jan Arnold is that true leader. Already the recipient of EDAs Outstanding Professional in Health Award and MAHPERDs R. Tait Mckenzie and Health Teacher of the Year Awards, we are proud to recognize Jan Arnold with the 2013 EDA Honor Award.

Curt Martin sits atop an impressive professional career, a mountain of service, and a pile of accolades but this quiet unassuming marvel gets great things done while drawing very little attention to himself. Curt retired from New Hampshires Hopkintons School district after 31 inspiring years of physical education teaching and 26 years of high school coaching. He continues to coach, now in his 5th year at NHTI Community College. While we recognize him as a physical educator and coach, Curts influence and leadership extended to his whole school and community. Curt served as President of the Hopkinton Education Association for five years and Gene White shares with us that during Curts 18 years on the Hopkinton Education Association Negotiation Committee, he helped to negotiate eight contracts that protected the rights and benefits of the district teachers. Over the years, they were able to bargain many innovative and cutting edge concepts that made it easy to attract and maintain a high quality staff for the students in Hopkinton. In 2003 his entire school honored him for his excellence by naming him the Susan Pisinski Elementary Teacher of the Year. Five years later, the Department of Education teamed with NHAHPERD to bestow on Curt the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Award (The EDies) for Meritorious Achievement. On the soccer field and basketball court, Coach Martin has inspired hundreds of young people, received a number of awards and recently enjoyed top honors when in 2010 he was installed into the NH Interscholastic Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame. Mr. EDA, Curt Martin has held leadership roles for many years. He started as President of NHAHPERD (1999-2001) and then served as the NH representative on the EDA Council for Services (2001-2003). From there he was quickly elevated to Vice President for Physical Education (2003-2005), then Vice President of Recreation ((2006-2007) and is presently Vice President for Physical Activity & Recreation as well as NHAPERD President. Perhaps this next year an EDA Presidency awaits him, as he has accepted a nomination to run. Lynn Johnson provides us one last insight to Curts character, The Honor Award, however, is not solely about what you volunteer for, but more importantly if that commitment is fulfilled with integrity and good character. Curt is someone that can be depended on to do what he says he is going to do, and does it well. He is thoughtful, has a high degree of integrity, and cares deeply about those he works with and those he serves. We proudly honor Curt Martin with the 2013 EDA Honor Award.
