Piping for the future

Taxis, large bakkies, and inner city taxis who thought that the heavy machinery were making a new traffic shortcut to Steelpoort and the centre of town when congestion grips Burgersfort on a Friday afternoon, are wrong, but not entirely wrong. What is actually happening next to Themba Garage up the mountain past Calvin College is land were cleared so that pipes for water reticulation can be installed. As far as could be determined, the pipe network will eventually link up with reticulation from the De Hoop Dam and link up with the pipe network already installed next to the R 37 road to Praktiseer. Pipes will also be connected to a new reservoir (the first of an eventual three) that will supply Burgersfort and its developing environs with water. This first new reservoir will be build adjacent to the existing town reservoirs (just a little bit higher up) where the land has already been cleared to start construction. The target date for completion of this initial phase of the project is October this year and will cost R53 million. Sekhukhune District Municipality gives the money and Esorfranki Pipelines do the work. The road you ask? Will eventually be a bypass from the R 555 from Steelpoort to Burgersfort Town, but will not enter the R 37 past Calvin College at Themba. That clearing is just for the pipes (Please, please do not try to drive there, you will go nowhere slowly).

Maepa Primary School gets covered up

But they remain a target for criminals - another attempted break-in this week
Maepa Primary School near Ohrigstad received a new corrugated iron roof on their old building last weekend. Three weeks ago, the roof on the newly constructed classrooms as well as the older section was stolen. Hannah Game Lodge, the sponsors of the new block of classrooms assisted to have the new section fixed as soon as possible. However, after a Senior District Manager from the Department of Education told the school to fall in the line for funds to fix the roof Hannah Game Lodge stepped in again. They with the help of Construction 2YK fixed the old buildings roof last weekend. The school however became a target of crime again earlier this week. On Tuesday evening thieves tried to gain access to an office where donated food were stored. A security guard left on the premises by Construction 2YK alerted the police in Ohrigstad. The criminals fled upon the arrival of the police. They fled on foot and did not take anything. By the time of going to press nobody has been arrested. To date the school has not received any support from government in general or the Department of Education. Cheap-Cheap Butchery in Burgersfort last week donated food for the schools feeding scheme and the school would like to thank them and all the other donors for their assistance. Their principal Mr Steven Mkhabela also thanked Hannah Game Lodge and 2YK for their continued support. The school has now moved their donated food supplies to another location. Anyone who would like to assist the school with donations towards the feeding scheme or assist any other way can contact the principal on 072 418 0200.

Visit a Debt Counsellor when you realise that you are over indebted. This is an alternative remedy to over indebtedness than the traditional methods such as Administration and Sequestration.
A Debt Review will protect the consumer from losing crucial assets and keep the Credit Providers from taking legal action on accounts that was lawfully included in the debt review. When visiting a Debt Counsellor the process will be as follows: Step 1: Provide details of your income, monthly budget and debt commitments to the Debt Counsellor. You will need copies of your pay slip, ID and the latest statement of all your debt. Step 2: The Debt Counsellor will do an initial assessment to check that you are over indebted, then the Debt Counsellor will set up a consultation with you. This could be a face to face consultation. Step 3: During the consultation the Debt Counsellor will verify your budget and your existing debt commitments. A new budget will be agreed and the amount available for debt repayment will be determined. The Debt Counsellor will also provide you with details of all the costs as well as an interim repayment plan. this is when you officially apply for Debt Counselling.. Step 4: The Debt Counsellor will contact all your Credit Providers as well as the Credit Bureaus to verify your debt. You will also be listed on the Credit Bereaus that you are under debt counselling. This listing will stay there until you have paid everything off, then it will be completely removed. The Debt Counsellor will, where possible, negotiate a proposal with all your Credit Providers. Step 5: The Credit Providers may accept the proposals and if all of them do then a Consent Order will be obtained from a Magistrate Court. If one or more of the Credit Providers do not accept the proposed repayment plan the Debt Counsellor will submit a proposal to the Magistrate for a decision. Step 6: The Debt Counsellor will provide you with a final repayment plan and this repayment plan is also submitted to a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA). The aim of this is to collect a single payment from you and ensure that the correct amount is paid to all Credit Providers on a monthly basis. This will continue until the debt has been repaid.

Career exhibition held at Ga-Maroga

A career exhibition was held by the Pulana Maroga Community Trust last week Friday at the Maroga Community Hall adjacent to ASA Metalss Dilokong Chrome Mine and Smelters. Learners from a large number of schools attended. Response from schools to attend were overwhelming, and those who could not find a place in the hall, gathered in the shade next to the building, under a large tent and under umbrellas. They did not miss anything as the proceedings in the hall were relayed outside by loudspeakers. Representatives from the private sector (mines etc.) government spheres and educational institutions (Sekhukhune FET College) addressed learners about future jobs, and their own hard work and part they should play to secure a future.

What do you think about the

This week in Parliament Planning Minister Trevor Manuel said that there are too few consequences for public servants who did not perform. He used the examples of teachers who get paid even when they have not taught our children, policemen and women who avoid being involved with crime prevention or health professionals in the states employ who run profitable private businesses and spend their time resting on the states bill. He said that a government skills audit is under way. He explained that they will be training public servants that will ensure that the different skill-sets required by government is met and that evidencebased decisions can be taken. He also condemned public servants doing business with their employer. Saying: There should be serious consquences. It is in the interest of all South Africans to build a professional and capable public service. Effective implementation will require a constant drive to improve. Too often the incentives do not encourage people to make the extra effort, he added. We asked readers what they think about the skills audit government plans to do and what effect they think it will have on South Africas public service.

Mnr.

Mr Frans Mokgotho said: It is a good thing. This government here with us - the municipality - there are no people doing their job properly. They must fire them and bring in new ones who will be able and willing to do the work.

Mr Kabelo Molapo said: It is a very, very good thing. Many young people would like to be teachers and will work hard so fire those who dont want to work.

Mnr.

Mr Leaf Malatjie said: All lazy people must be fired, get the right people who can do the job! At the end of the day production is low because of those lazy people.

Mr Botsana Legodi said: Yes, I think thats the right thing to do. Like the municipality, they just dont respond. Check the way our tar roads look. There are also teachers who go around in school hours while they should be teaching.

Mnr.

Ms Mokgadi Mamabolo said: That should have been done a long time ago. If you dont work you cannot get paid. You should be paid for work done. If they will also be retraining people it will be good.

Mnr. As dit werk sal dit goed wees.

planned government skills audit?

Mr Jankie Mkhondo said: Government committed a mistake by removing inspectors from schools. So teachers know nobody is checking on them. They must bring inspectors back. Once they employ people they must make sure they have the right qualifications from the start and will be able to do the work. It will be a good thing this audit and everything that goes with it, but dont just dismiss people. If people know someone is looking at them with a sharp eye, they will perform.

Me.

Mr Lawrence Dlamini said: That is the way. If it does not work, get rid of them. Get people who are willing to work. We are getting nowhere with people who dont want to work and play their part. It is fair to do an audit on their skills and act accordingly.

Me.

Mr Teenage Shai said: They have to train them. Many fail to do their jobs because they lack skills. Government must get rid of those who are just lazy.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: They must not just fire them. They must move them somewhere else where they can do something useful, like becoming cleaners. It will be the best. If they are just playing around and not working, fire them. They are supposed to work hard.

Mr Daniel David Phasha said: It is going to help, but they wont be able to get rid of all those who dont want to work.

Mr Madala Mokoena said: I think it is a good thing. The lazy ones must go - they just eat the money. They must get people who want to work hard and do the job.

Ms Unice Lekodi said: If they can deal with those people and do a big audit it will be good. It will be good to re-train or fire those who are not working properly. They must get inspectors and HODs to check on them.

Mr Rollen Mashego, Mr Simon Makola and Mr Dennis Tonga said: They will not be able to get rid of all those who do not do their work properly. There are just too many. There is also too much corruption, so there will be tip-offs etc. before anything happens.

Beware when sticking your pamphlet to a traffic sign

It is illegal - You will be fined
Those using traffic signs as advertising boards might soon face the might of the law. It is illegal to attach any type of advertising to a traffic sign. Chief Traffic Officer at Greater Tubatse Municipality, Mr Lekwadu said: People who spot someone attaching pamphlets or posters to traffic signs should report the matter to us. We will follow-up on the matter and those who are guilty of using traffic signs as advertising boards will be fined. People are welcome to come and see the full bylaw that covers advertising on traffic lights etc. at my office. NUUS

On Tuesday this week we took the key of a Chevrolet Utility 1.4 Club from Westvaal Steelpoorts Sales Manager, Timothy Chowles, for a short trip to see if something like this will work to transport (surprise) newspapers! The one we got to drive was fitted with the optional alloy wheels and also had a rubberised load bay, the rubberising not standard. Otherwise it was as advertised. We did not have a load of newspapers at hand (it get snatched up too fast on Fridays) so we tested the bakkie empty.

First thing that impressed your claustrophobic editor is that the cabin is large enough for bigger guys than him, and they will also not feel as if in a sardine can. Aircon works marvellously, although when you hit rough tar, the road noise combined with an air conditioner fan running at half speed, may just be a little bit too much for your ears. Pavarotti from the radio or memory stick in the USB slot or CD-player, may not reach your ears unscathed. Also be careful with your water or cool drink container. If it is too high, it will be difficult to switch Pavarotti off because it will obscure some of the radios controls. Your hand will also knock against the bottles time and again as you switch the gears with the long throw gearlever. So much for the gripes. The 1389 cc petrol engine pulls quite strongly, and if you do not plan to race with the vehicle (it is supposed to be a workhorse) we do not think you really need the more expensive 1800 cc It is also more economic to run and the 120 Nm of torque at 3200 revs combined with the 68 kW at 6000 revs will prove to be adequate to haul 743 kg (max) up a pass, although you will not necessarily be on top first. Directional stability is satisfactory and the bumpy stretch of the R 555 past the Lion Smelter to the Steel Bridge did not faze this easily likeable bakkie. The instrument cluster should be kept away from your son, because it is very much Playstation-like, but works surprisingly well, even in harsh sunlight. The seats are comfortable and the space behind them almost boot-like in size. We had no problem in fitting camera bags and a laptop bag behind one seat. Turning off to Ga-Mampuru to take a spin on the gravel road we soon encountered a herd of cattle in the tarred road (we were driving 60 km/h) and the ABS brakes work extremely well for a bakkie. We even had time to get a camera out and photograph the creatures before they disappeared into the village. Taken that the load bay was empty it was bumpy, but still comfortable when we hit the gravel. Someone once said that lingerie models do not load bags of cement. That task is left to the uglier and more muscular members of the species. The new Chevrolet Utility bakkie may be not very pretty to some, but we are sure that it will take a load and keep on working for years, whether as a second private vehicle or in a small business or even as a general runabout. Contact Westvaal Steelpoort at 013 230 9519 if you want one. It is also reasonably priced and yes, it will carry a full load of newspapers with ease.

Maatlopo United to face Mooihoek XI Exprience

Lup Mokgatho was the star of Maatlopo United after he scored goals in both the games the team played last weekend. Maatlopo United FC played against Makgalanoto Young Chiefs on Saturday last week. Maatlopo won 2-1. On Sunday they faced Ngwaabe City Motors and this game ended in a 1-1 draw. The inconsistance of our team is a concern to us, especially after our 3-0 loss against Masekolara on 9 February, said Mr Jimmy Makola, the teams spokeman. This week Maatlopo will host Mooihoek XI Experience at 15:00 on Saturday. We know they will come to take revenge because we beat then 4-3 in the first round on 11 November last year, Makola said. He invited all sports loving people to come and watch the games and support the teams. (Information: Jimmy Makola, 082 407 6226)

Winterveld Buffels are starting the years play
The Winterveld Buffels started their rugby season with a friendly game against the Harlequins from Pretoria. The game was played at Groblersdal. The club took 34 players along and everyone had some game time. It was a full length, full contact game. We had a chance to try different team combinations and game plans, says Charl van der Merwe, the teams assistant coach. Unfortunately the team lost this game. The Senior Presidents league in which the Buffels will participate is starting in early March. On Tuesday evening this week Jasphat Moloto from the Bulls Rugby Union visited the Club. He was very impressed with the number of players who came to the practise and ensured the team management of their continued support towards club rugby. The Bulls Rugby Union will be hosting a variety of development programs for talented individual players as well as for team development. The Buffels would like to thank the following sponsors who made their friendly game at Groblersdal possible: Ahead Construction, AFM Churc, Pick n Pay and Tyre Corporation. The Buffels practise every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:00 19:30 at the Winterveld Recreational Clubs rugby field. Thank you to ECM for maintaining the field and allowing our clubs members to develop their talent and love for the game. We all treasure the grounds. For the love of the game! Charl added. For any further information or players who would like to join the club can contact the following people: Charl van der Merwe (079 690 0858), Neels Beukes (083 291 8005) or Quartes du Toit (072 341 3010).
