You are given the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them an important part of your development. A large amount of trust is placed with you and the development is real and immediate.

What does your role involve?

The placement presented me with a number of challenges; the biggest was running a Lidl store straight after training. Being accountable for the keys to a store was a huge responsibility, along with the other added duties such as running a shift, ensuring employees are happy with their roles and that they are doing their tasks correctly. The first time you close down a store and take control of the safe is quite nerve racking. However, this was made easier by Lidls great support network.

Is German essential for all graduate roles?

Fluency in German is not essential for all our graduate roles, however it would be advantageous for further development should you move business functions or work internationally. For specific, specialised roles such as our Graduate Manager Buying, International Traineeship and certain Head Office Graduate Manager opportunities, fluency in German is a pre-requisite.

When and where will the interviews be held?

We hold regular interviews for our Area Management and Graduate Manager Store programmes. These are held regionally at one of our eight Regional Distribution Centres (see map opposite for locations). If you are successful to stage 2 and 3, we will always invite you to attend a recruitment session at the RDC nearest to where you live. For our other graduate opportunities, the position will determine when and where the interview would be held.

How flexible do I need to be?

We require our graduates to be as flexible as possible. As an example, if you are successful in an Area Management position we will always try to place you close to where you currently live, however this is not guaranteed. We may place you where you will receive the best training and development or ask you to move to an opportunity if required. For our other roles flexibility may be necessary, but this would be discussed depending on your role, its location and the specified training plan.

When will I hear a response?

Our aim is to respond to your application by letter or email within 28 days of receipt, when we will communicate to you if you are successful to the next stage in the graduate selection process.

Lidl & the environment.

We take our social and environmental responsibilities as seriously as we take our business. Were committed to keeping you up-to-date with the positive steps Lidl is taking, especially in terms of environmental issues, sustainability and healthy eating. Some examples of our proactive work are:

Recycling
We estimate that in the UK we recycle approximately 42,000 tonnes of cardboard and plastic each year. At Lidl, we continue to work closely with our suppliers to help develop innovative packaging solutions that eliminate as much of the unnecessary packaging as possible.

Coolants
Environmental best practice is a core consideration in every aspect of our business. Our Company utilises the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme (The ECA Scheme) to ensure our refrigeration plant conforms to energy efficiency standards.

Lighting
Our store warehouses, staff welfare areas, Regional Distribution Centres and office buildings are equipped with motion sensors and intelligent lighting systems that activate the lights only when required, helping to conserve energy.

Emissions
Reducing emissions is very important to Lidl. We carefully plan all our deliveries to ensure no unnecessary fuel consumption occurs and always aim to deliver the maximum amount of products possible for each litre of fuel we use.

Carrier bags
We pioneered encouraging our customers to re-use their plastic shopping bags by applying a small levy. By doing this we have saved the disposal of millions of plastic bags.

Looking to the future

Biodegradable bags, more efficient delivery techniques and investment in low carbon emission technologies are further stepping stones towards leaving a greener footprint for the future.
