A studio class examining forms of abstraction in painting and drawing by focusing on visual history. Working in the studio from reproductions including 20th century masters, we'll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction - composition with color and shape - is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images, as the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints. We will not be copying the superficial appearance of paintings, but rather, trying to get inside and see what they are made of. Learn to use abstract shorthands to describe both what is there and also what we see and how we see it. Materials will be Crayola crayons, acrylic paints, and pencils.

Summer Art Camp & Teen Studios

Its going to be a truly legendary summer filled with drawing, painting, fiber arts, printmaking, ceramics, and jewelry as we explore myths, legends and fairytales from cultures around the world! Each week-long session explores a new continent and incorporates fine art and craft techniques from around the world. Before care, after care and lunch care available. Camp takes place at The Shipley Schools Middle School (814 Yarrow Street) in Bryn Mawr. Visit our website for details, or call today for a brochure. Pre-Teen Studios: Ages 11-13 Back by popular demand, artists ages 11-13 select a morning and afternoon intensive (or 1 for a half day) where they will have more time to hone their skills while working closely with a professional artist. See our camp brochure for details.

Teen Studios provide young artists (ages 13 to 18) the opportunity to study specific mediums in-depth with professional artists. Students build upon technical skill as they expand their imaginations and prepare for a career or further studies in the world of visual arts. Classes are small enough to provide individualized attention and critiques so that students can create work they are proud of and that can be used for portfolio packages for college or art school admissions.
