Deped says pols not allowed to attend graduation rites

TACLOBAN CITYThe Department of Education (DepEd) has it issued a memorandum to all schools to make sure their graduation rites will not be used as a political forum by politicians who are running in the May mid-term elections. However, the memorandum came short of what can or cannot be done, as it simply stated graduation rites should be conducted in an appropriate and solemn ceremony befitting the graduating students and their parents and shall not be used as political forum. DepEd Assistant Regional Director Rebecca Ragrag said they want to prevent politicians from using the graduation rites to promote themselves by making sure there is already a script for the occasion and that this will be strictly followed. Leyte bridge remains impassable, DPWH says

TACLOBAN CITY A bridge in Mayorga, Leyte, located within the Pan-Philippine highway, the countrys principal transport backbone, has remained impassable for three days due to flooding, prompting hundreds of northbound and southbound motorists to take alternative routes. Ma. Margarita Junia, district engineer of the Department of Public Works and Highways Leyte 2 nd office, said that the detour of Talisay Bridge located near the boundary of Dulag and Mayorga towns is still closed to traffic, prompting them to advise hundreds of motorists to take alternative routes. Since the Talisay Bridge is under rehabilitation, we advised motorist to take the detour bridge, which was damaged o n We d n e s d a y d u e to flooding. Repair of detour bridge will start when floodwater subsides, Junia said. The 10-meter Talisay Bridge is within the 3,517 kilometers network of roads, bridges, and ferry services that connect the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. The ongoing P6.86 million strengthening project has started on January 14, 2013. The infrastructure agency pushed for repair of old bridges so it can withstand impacts of natural calamities such as flooding and earthquakes. The DPWH told motorists to take these alternative routes: Mayorga-LapazBurauen-Julita-Dulag road or the MayorgaLapaz-BurauenDagami-Tanauan. Traffic advisory billboards were installed in strategic areas to inform travelers. Meanwhile, the DPWH has already cleared the national road in Barangay Del Remedio, Sulat, Eastern Samar late Thursday afternoon following a major landslide that rendered the road impassable late Wednesday night. Equipments were immediately sent to the site to conduct clearing operations that lasted more than a day, said DPWH Regional Director Rolando Asis. The road network connects Borongan City, Eastern Samars capital to the neighboring Samar province and northern towns of Eastern S a m a r. Vote-buying

ote buying could be anything. That is, any item of value offered by a candidate and accepted by a voter in exchange for his or her vote. With that, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has broadened its basic definition of vote buying, and both voters and candidates are forewarned. Our only worry is this if the Comelec cannot stop vote-buying in its regular form, how can it keep track of the electoral offense through a medium other than cash, much less prevent it? It could indeed be a daunting task if not a mission impossible for the seriously undermanned and woefully under-funded poll body. But lets give the Comelec credit for at least trying.

Still, we are amused by the agencys warning that serving the voting public food and drinks on the eve of Election Day may well be construed as vote-buying. The Comelec said it was mulling over coming out with a measure that would reduce, if not totally eradicate, the practice of vote-buying among candidates during the May elections. Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. over the weekend said giving away food such as lechon or even just pansit to voters on the eve of the elections is something that could fall under vote-buying. But Brillantes said the election body would keep it under wraps and only roll it

over the vicious political dynasty in the Philippines, where not one of the national legislators, who are all politicians, would like to pass a law that could later be detrimental to their ulterior motives, prayer without ceasing is the only way to a favorable outcome for those who pray against the persistence of political dynasty in the country. As the priest said, Pray incessantly. Ask, seek and knock and the answer will come as prayed for. There is a reward to those who patiently wait, the elders say.

Pray without ceasing with all humility and faith, and at all times be thankful, for the Lord your God shall bless you. This is usually heard from the elders as piece of advice to the younger generation at most times. This is not distinct from what that Bible speaks. In the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians, it is written, And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. In the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians, Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. And in the Epistle of James The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. These days, with all the events happening all around, there is always this one last recourse: plea to the Almighty God. Prayer, for so many times, has been thought as the very factor that changed the course of events. How many typhoons evaded Eastern Visayas? How many elections concluded successfully? How many gigs, forum, convocations and other societal activities ended with resounding acclamation? How many exams were painstakingly hurdled? And how many hopefuls made it? In all these, what was the common affirmation of all who achieved their noble purpose? Prayers answered or By Gods grace. Is it not the truth, that prayers make things happen just as it is said that faith can move mountain? There had been countless stories about the power of prayer, some of which answered soon, others a bit later, while still some others not. For those who have unwavering faith in the Almighty God, whatever response there is to the prayer, such is the will of God for them and they stop there. However, there are more resolute persons who persevere in their prayer, pleading to Father God without ceasing. As it is

universally observed, try and try until you succeed. This is especially so when the prayer is for attainment of something beyond the ephemeral, something not superficial, or something that is divine. Like what? Recently, the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines, particularly the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, faced a great challenge with the defeat of the antiReproductive Health crusade. This time, they vowed a more diligent effort to make sure that the proposed Divorce Law will not prosper. Now that the election fever is shooting up, some of those who belong to this universal church in the country and abroad are lambasting the national legislators for not acting on the popular clamor for them to pass a law that will enable the Constitutional provision against political dynasty. A fearless leader of the local church, in a homily, articulated his sentiment on this matter. He commented that while the national legislators speedily passed the RH bill for certain consideration, not one of them takes the courage to put an end to this vice called political dynasty. Dovetailing his homily from the Gospel on February 21, which was about imploring Gods help, he said praying incessantly especially in times discord is a best way to seek a positive response, but as to how and when, only God knows, he said. High dengue fever cases noted in Tacloban

GOVT CENTER, PALO, Leyte- The regional office of the Department of Health, based here, reported that the number of dengue fever cases in Tacloban City has now reached to 83 as of this week. Based on their record, most of the reported dengue fever cases of Tacloban were from V and G subdivision whose cases accounts almost half of the entire cases of the city. The youngest of those who fell ill due to dengue fever was a month old baby with a 52-year old man as the oldest to have been aicted with the same ailment. Aside from V and G subdivision, other areas in the city which have notable dengue fever were in Barangays 71, 91 and 74. The regional health department, in coordination with the City Health Office, is intensifying their information campaign on how to avoid dengue fever like massive cleaning of surroundings particularly breeding grounds of mosquitoes which causes the ailment.

Mayor Romualdez distributes drinking water and food packs to Paglaum residents
TACLOBAN CITYMayor Alfred Romualdez of this city led in the distribution of drinking water and food packs to residents of Barangay 103- APaglaum, on February 19, 2013, accompanied by the water distribution team of the City General Services Office and personnel from the Barangay Affairs Office. Earlier, the city chief executive brought doctors and nurses to the said barangay and conducted an emergency medical mission. He also distributed toilet facilities to indigent families. Due to incessant rain experienced in the city these past few weeks, many residents of the barangay suffered from stomach ailments, mainly due to contaminated drinking water coupled with lack of nutritious food.
