Team Ubuntu SG Meeting 21 February 2009 – Agenda and Directions

Here are the items I have collected for the agenda. Other topics can be discussed, of course.

Agenda Items
● Ubuntu Presentation at NUS School of Computing
We have been invited by Ho Fucai to make an Ubuntu presentation for the linuxNUS group
at NUS. The time slot for this activity will be after 16:00 on Wednesdays. Venue is the
School of Computing. The audience will be computing students.
Some considerations:
● Since our audience will be technically-inclined, we should make the presentation
more in-depth and technically oriented than we would for a general audience.
● We should make the presentation more “hands-on”, giving participants an interactive
experience and hopefully leaving them with a fully operational Ubuntu installation
on their own computers.
● We can have the location for multiple events, so a series of presentations would be
possible. One possible configuration would be three meetings of two hours each,
comprised of:
1. Introduction to GNU/Linux and Ubuntu. Participants run Ubuntu from a
LiveCD or a LiveUSB installation. Include basic check-out of hardware
compatibility.
2. Installation of Ubuntu on participants' computers in a dual-boot
configuration, or through the use of the wubi-installer.
3. Advanced desktop use, including customization, addition of non-free
applications and packages, and optimization.
● When, where and how can we practice for this event?
● Ubuntu Presentation at SMU School of Information Science
We have been invited by Vincent Lai/OS3 to make an Ubuntu presentation for the students
at SMU. Time slot has yet to be determined. Venue would most likely be School of
Information Sciences (SIS). Audience would be non-technical end users.
Some considerations:
● As our audience will be “results-oriented” business students, our presentation should
be relatively non-technical and focused on desktop app usage.
● As an introductory presentation, we should restrict ourselves to a single presentation
of no more than two hours length.
● We should restrict ourselves to LiveCD and LiveUSB usage, since there will not be
time in this format to perform hard disk installation.
● If audience interest warrants, we could schedule a second session for an installfest-
like workshop to install Ubuntu to end-users' hard disks.
● When, where and how can we practice for this event?
● Our website
Discussion of our website with a view towards improving reliability and incorporating new
functionality.
Some considerations:
● Better control of backups to avoid information loss.
 ● Adding functionality, such as a facility to match up end users in the community with
technicians and companies that can provide customized services.
● Better performance over-all. For example, too often the site is minimally accessible,
or completely off-line.
● Our organization
● Should we be considering becoming a Registered Society?
● Regularly scheduled meetings:
● At what time should we hold a regularly monthly meeting?
● Where should regular meetings be held? Vincent Lai has indicated that use of
SMU facilities should be possible.
● Besides regular team business, what else should we do at a regular meeting.
For example, should we have pesentations or outside speakers, as the
Singapore Linux Meetup Group does?
● Our team members
● What should we do to recruit more members?
● What should we do in the way of self-training? Perhaps we should self train with an
eye towards our members becoming Ubuntu Certified Professionals (see

The next page has some annotated screen prints from Google Earth that might help. The nearest
MRT is Bukit Batok. From there you can take SMRT bus line 176. Note that line 176 does not go to
the bus interchange. You have to cross Bukit Batok Central to the bus stop in order to get that bus.
Let me know if you are coming with your own vehicle, since I may need to get a guest parking
pass.
Taking the bus from Bukit Batok MRT

When you exit from Bukit Batok MRT, West Mall shopping center will be on your left. You must
cross Bukit Batok Central to the north side to get SMRT bus 176, or you will be heading in the
wrong direction.
