Doing More with Less

As you hear the news reports and read the headlines, it is
hard to remain optimistic. In fact, for many of us, we will need
to tighten our financial belts. As we do this, we must be careful
not to lose sight of the ministry to which God
calls us and reach out to one another.
The third key to Ministry Strategy
at FFC is to serve people. The overall
goal is to help you apply your
spiritual gifts in serving others. To
do this we endeavor to encourage
and assist you to be socially
responsible and evangelistically
bold in the joyful use of your
time, talents and treasures.
Paul’s letter to the church at
Philippi provides these encour-
agement to aid us in embracing
this call. In these times when we
are tempted to pull in our horns, Paul provides two cautions and
two exhortations to help us see the need beyond ourselves.
Biblical scholar J. B. Phillips paraphrases verses 3 & 4 of
chapter 2 this way:
• Never act from selfish motives or personal vanity, but
• in humility think more of each other than you do of yourselves.
• Don’t think only of your own affairs, but
• consider other people’s interests also.
As we move towards the goal of serving others, we will seek
to integrate service opportunities in everything that we do,
including connecting in small groups.
Being connected in a smaller group of like-minded believers
offers many benefits. Some of the rewards of connecting with
others include: greater profit for your efforts to grow spiritually,
increased productivity in your spiritual journey, the abundant
provision of people who intimately know your needs, and neces-
sary protection from your spiritual enemy, Satan.

The elected officers of First Federated Church include ELDERS and DEACONS. These

those you know with acts of service and words of hope. There
officers are elected annually by the congregation on the last Sunday in February. The annual
election of church officers for 2009 will be conducted on February 22, 2009 from 9:00–
10:45am in the auditorium foyer nursery hallway and from 10:15–10:45am in the Franklin
Hall foyer. Ballots will be available to members 16 years of age and over. Members may
vote for up to 4 Elders and 3 Deacons. We strongly encourage you to participate even though
there is a small slate of candidates to affirm. Should you know that you will be unable to

ning February 16, ballots will be available in the office during normal business hours. Those

To serve in a leadership position at First Federated Church, an individual must:

Ministry, a quick visit to the Children’s Ministry Registration

Infants & Preschool Children
Childcare and teaching are available during the 9:15 hour and 10:45 worship services
in the Nursery and Preschool Departments.
Kindergarten–4th Grade
During the 9:15 hour, K–4th graders meet in graded classroom groups for Bible
learning and fun.
K–4th graders attend the first part of the 10:45 worship services with their families
and then are dismissed to attend their own age-appropriate children’s church, called
KZ Church. Parents, we encourage you to go with your children the first time they visit
KZ Church in Room 240.
Xtreme AM (5th & 6th Grade)
Our preteens meet in their own Xtreme spot, Room 205, at 9:15 for a time of Xtreme
learning, Xtreme prayer and Xtreme relationship-building, then join their families for
the 10:45 worship services.
Youth (Grade 7–12) & Adults
Groups for ADULTS and activities for YOUTH begin at 9:15AM. Stop by
the Welcome Center to find out about each of the groups and how to get there.
Cellular Phones & Pagers
Thank you for turning off or muting your cell phone, pager and other electronic
devices during this morning’s worship service.
Assistive Listening Devices (Auditorium Only)

 MISSION ONE Reaching others for Jesus Christ
Elaine Weller
Mission Board:
Child Evangelism Fellowship
Location: Warrenton, Missouri
What does she do? Elaine has officially
retired as a full-time staff person with
CEF as of January 5, 2009. Throughout
her 40-year career she served in a local
directorship in Michigan, in Ecuador,
and the last 20 years in International Ministries at the Inter-
national Headquarters. As a missionary retiree Elaine will
continue to serve as a volunteer in International Ministries,
helping especially with matters related to the CEF Spanish-
speaking ministry and preparing prayer and newsletters for
USA-sent missionaries.
Praises:
• For Elaine’s years of service in reaching boys and girls with
the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Prayer requests:
• For this new chapter in Elaine’s life.
• For God’s financial provision of retirement support.
• For Elaine and her sister, Beth Hanna (CAM International,
San Juan del Rio, Mexico), as they plan to participate in our
missions conference April 19-25, 2009.
Leroy & Debbie Zumack
Mission Board: Greater Europe Mission
Location: Lille, France
What do they do? The Zumacks are
church planters in an area with a
large population of Muslims and
young people. Leroy is part of a
pastoral team and is responsible
for pastoral visits, preaching, leading prayer meetings,
directing a house church, prison chaplaincy, as well as devel-
oping a project for starting a daughter church. The team uses
English and running clubs as a means of outreach.
Praises:
• Another couple is coming to serve the student population
(95,000) in the coming months.
Prayer Requests:
• For Leroy’s worship meetings in the prison to draw people to
Christ and edify the believers.
• For Debbie’s times with young mothers—for her contacts
through teaching English.
• For spiritual maturity and for the small group ministry to
bear fruit in the Eau Vive (Living Water) Church they serve.
• There are 6+ churches in Lille, a city of 226,000 people.
Pray they will know when the next church plant should take
place and to discover their target.
• For sensitivity and boldness in sharing Christ.

Closed Country
What does she do? Grace and her late husband, Gordon, sought
to promote prayer for their country by organizing, orienting
and facilitating prayer teams that visit. They trained local
workers to assemble, distribute and maintain solar cookers
and taught families how to maintain and cook with them.
They established radio programs, had Bible studies with
seekers and believers, produced and distributed Bible materi-
als.
Praises:
• For 3 months in England; a 2nd memorial service for Gordon
in Brainerd, MN; 24/7 electricity in her home—the first time
in 6 years there.
Prayer Requests:
• For Grace as she goes through Gordon’s things and gets rid
of non-essentials.
• For the continuation of literacy work started in the 70’s.
• For producing “how to” books for those who buy solar ovens
and cookers.
• For the building they use for worship not to be forcibly taken
back by the grandson of the owner –there are 50 years left on
the rental agreement.
• For the Lord’s help and guidance as she continues on without
Gordon.
Sarah Decker
Mission Board: InterVarsity
Location: Nice, France
What does she do? Sarah co-leads a ministry
team. She is responsible for leading, train-
ing and mentoring new team members.
Her team serves on two university cam-
puses, Liberal Arts and Medical, and also
links with Group Bible Universities (GBU) to plan activities
and outreaches. Her team also works with a local church and
a large number of young women who attend Bible studies.
Prayer Requests:
• For safe travel and a good trip.
• For plans to invite several local pastors to give talks at their
large group meetings. Pray this will strengthen GBU’s rela-
tionship with local churches and leaders.
• For organizing an event with a gifted speaker to do two Bible
and Koran comparison talks.
• For God to lead people to give to the expenses of having the
speaker come.
