From basic to advanced simulators
1980 In the 1980s the American Heart Association set a criteria of 90%
correct performance to obtain CPR certification: SkillMeter Resusci
Anne was developed to meet the need of quantitative real-time
CPR measurement and feedback.
1990 In the 1990s there was much focus on sufficient hands-on practice.
Little Anne® was introduced in 1995 as a cost-efficient supplemental
trainer to meet the need for a lower student to manikin ratio.
2000 In the 2000s growing concern about patient safety and benefits of
more wide-spread CPR training led to increased focus on patient
simulation and self-directed learning.

Training Products Patient Simulators Basic
The PROMPT Birthing Simulator is designed to allow instructors to effectively teach the
complexities associated with birthing, while allowing learners to practice the skills required
for successful deliveries. The clinical accuracy of the PROMPT product offers the ability
to present both the mother and baby in multiple positions to simulate:
• Training in normal, difficult, instrument, and placenta deliveries
• Training in the relief of shoulder dystocia
• Measurement of the traction forces applied by the obstetrician
to the baby during delivery
Force Monitoring
The Force Monitoring version of the PROMPT Birthing Simulator offers
learners the unique opportunity to receive instant feedback via the strain
gauge and software as to the amount of traction force applied to a baby
during delivery. The force, measured in Newtons, is graphically displayed
on a PC monitor (not included).
The software can be configured for different time intervals and with
different intervention markers so that instructors can create scenarios
designed to teach specific objectives. The instructor can then save the
recorded graphs and events for facilitated debriefing after the training.

Courseware Overview Scenarios
Scenarios
Bringing quality solutions to nursing, inhospital staff, military, and prehospital first responders.
In 2003, The National League for Nursing (NLN) announced a new relationship with Laerdal
to support vitally important nursing education research. Laerdal supported the NLN with a
three-year grant for a national, multi-site, multi-method project to develop and test models
using simulation to promote student learning in nursing. Eight NLN member schools were
selected as project sites to develop innovative uses of simulation. Participating schools
documented student outcomes of learning, specifically, the extent to which different simulation
models affect students’ critical thinking skills, level of self-confidence/anxiety, and knowledge.
The result of this research is Simulation in Nursing Education Scenarios, Volume I and Volume II.
These scenario packages are validated by the NLN, the one national organization that
represents the nursing workforce at all levels of education and practice.

Tailored patient therapy
Guidelines recommend compressing the patients’ chest at least 1.6-2.0 inches. This in itself is
hard to judge by rescuers, and made even harder because the required compression force on an
individual patients’ chest varies greatly. In fact, Tomlinson et al (2007) showed that patients’ chests
require a compression force ranging from 22-121 pounds-force to reach the minimum compression
depth5.
Q-CPR feedback provides tailored patient therapy by guiding rescuers to deliver correct
compression depth and force in order to meet Guideline recommendations.

With Q-CPR evaluation tools, debriefing is now possible also for CPR rescuers. Edelson et al.
(2008) found that by adding debriefing to CPR feedback for in-hospital therapy, initial sudden
cardiac arrest survival rates (ROSC) increased from 45% to 60% 6 .

Why it matters
Without CPR following sudden cardiac arrest, the probability % Survival
of survival reduces by 7-10% per minute7. 40
When bystander CPR is delivered, the patient stands a better Current
average CPR
chance as reduction in probability for survival is only 3-4% per minute. 30
Potential survival
Overall, bystander CPR increases survival 2-3 times compared with quality CPR?
In 2005, international landmark studies showed that the quality Without early CPR
Survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest have been virtually unchanged for the past 25 years. However, recent studies from
EMS systems in Wisconsin16, Seattle17, Kansas City18 and Arizona19 in the U.S. report significant increases in survival rates.

The Laerdal Company was established in 1940. During our first two decades,
we created innovative toys and books for children.
In 1960, with the introduction of the Resusci Anne® manikin, the company
dedicated itself to advancing the cause of resuscitation and emergency care.
A new logo was needed to reflect our mission. Our founder, Åsmund S. Laerdal,
chose the image of the Good Samaritan. It depicts the ancient tale of the
2 0 0 9 P R O D U C T S C ATA L O G
traveler whose selfless compassion and care saved the life of a total stranger.
This became our emblem and our inspiration.
Today, Laerdal Medical is dedicated to helping save lives with products, services,
and systems solutions that support the Chain of Survival and the Circle of 2 0 0 9 P R O D U C T S C ATA L O G
Learning. The Good Samaritan logo symbolizes our commitment to every
health professional and volunteer who has learned how to save the life of a
family member, friend, or stranger in need.
