SECOD SUDAY OF LET

Many of us have buried relatives or friends who have had an
impact on our lives. Standing there in the funeral home or meditating
at their grave, we can recall what they meant to us, how their words or
actions touched us in some way, how what they did gave some shape
to the person we are today. Often, it is only years later that we recog-
nize in ourselves some of their own character.
Every year on the Second Sunday of Lent, we hear a version
of the story of the transfiguration of Jesus. Matthew, Mark, and Luke
each describe the experience in a rather similar fashion. But Luke
adds something that the others leave out. As Jesus converses with
Moses and Elijah who have appeared alongside him on the mountain,
Luke says that they "spoke of his exodus that he was going to accom-
plish in Jerusalem." This is pure Lucan theology. Luke constructs his
Gospel in such a way that Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem where he
will accomplish the fulfillment of his Father's will through his death and
resurrection. In doing so, he ushers in the era of the church on which
the Holy Spirit is poured out, as a prelude to the triumph of the king-
dom of God. For Luke, the exodus of Jesus in Jerusalem is his pass-
over from death to life in the glory of the Resurrection. The Transfiguration is a glimpse of that glory.
In a way, at the top of that mountain, Peter, James, and John were already witnessing what could be
the impact of this man in their lives. He was going to change everything. As he has done with us! During Lent
we take some time to reflect on what the life and teaching of Jesus means to us. We don't stand at his grave,
but at an empty tomb, and recall that the One who passed over from death to life holds that promise for us as
well.

Catholic Charities 2013 Annual Appeal: The 2013
Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is underway with an in-
pew commitment process taking place this weekend. All
who have not received the mailing, or have not had a
chance to respond to it, are asked to consider making a
generous pledge to support the ministries and services
provided by Catholic Charities. If you have received the
mailing. Please respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew
envelopes to indicate that you have responded by mail.
This is not a special collection. Rather, the Catholic
Charities Annual Appeal is the one time during the year
that all Catholics are asked to make a significant pledge,
payable in installments to Catholic Charities in order to
serve the needy, the vulnerable and the marginalized.
This years appeal theme is: We Welcome, We Serve, We
Support. We ask that each parishioner consider the bless-
ing God has given us as well as the good that we can ac-
complish when we act with the unity and strength of our
faith. The impact of Catholic Charities cannot be under-
stated. Over 300,000 people from every suburb and city in
Northeast Ohio benefit from their programs and services
each year. Please consider a generous gift to the Catholic
Charities 2013 Annual Appeal, and please pray for the
success of this important Appeal. We invite you to view
the stories of inspiration and more information at
www.catholiccommunity.org/2013Appeal.

Mass
The Lord Jesus washed the feet of his disci-
ples at the Last Supper as a sign of the new
commandment that Christians should love

you, so must your love be for each
other. This is how all will know you for my
disciples: by your love for one an-
other. (John 13, 34-35). For centuries the
Church has imitated the Lord through the ritual enactment. Were
looking for both men and women of the parish that would be inter-
ested in participating in the ritual enactment during the 7:30 p.m.

spouses. Its worth checking out!
