studyartworkwhichdepictsthe artistsexperiencesofgriefandloss. Thegroupmembersareinvitedto ownexperiencesofloss,oftheir visionofthebridgebetweentheir oldselfandtheirnewnormal self.Groupmembershavenotedthat thisexperiencehasallowedthemto expressemotionsthattheyhave dicultyaddressinganddening. Tentativestrokesofapencil,asplash Thetermambiguouslosshasalso ofpaint,agiggleassomeonehears thesofttonesofthexylophone,the focusedattentionofaclient beginningtoexploreimagesofbrain injuryandhopethroughacamera programatBrainCareCentrethis spring.Thisprogram,ExploringGrief andLossthroughtheExpressiveArts, usesthesemediatoassistindividuals withbraininjuryinexploringthe challengingemotionswhichprevent themfrommovingforwardintheir recovery.Griefandlossarecommon themesamongthoseaectedby acquiredbraininjury(ABI)and traumaticbraininjury(TBI).These lossesinclude,butarenotlimitedto employment,income,personal autonomy,selfidentity,familyand friends;losseswhicharecumulative andongoing.Aseachpersonmoves throughtheirjourneytowards recovery,theyexperienceahostof emotionsassociatedwithgriefand loss. Intheliterature,thestagesofgrief,as proposedbyElizabethKublerRoss (1969)involvenumbness,shock, anger,bargaining,depression,and ultimatelyacceptance.More contemporarymodelsofthegrief processportrayacyclicalpath,in whichanindividualmayexperience revisittheseemotionalstages throughouttheirgriefprocess.For individualswithbraininjury,such theyhavebecome.Formany, revisitingtheseremindersisa challengingandlifelongprocess.By exploringtheseemotionsand examiningtheireect,thepilot ExpressiveArtsGriefandLoss TherapyGroupcanassistBCCclients. Clientswillbesupportedtomove forward,defylimitationsandcreatea newnormalwhichispartofthe griefprocess. ThephotographycomponentoftheExpressiveArtsGriefandLossTherapyGroupisco facilitatedbylongtimecaregiverandvolunteer,MuftyMathewson.Muftybringsunique giftsofbothphotographicandrsthandexperienceofthischallengingjourney.Muftys daughter,whoacquiredabraininjurymanyyearsago,hasledMuftytoherown explorationoftheseprocessesthroughthelensofhercamera.Groupmembersare givensomebasicknowledgeaboutphotographyandthenexploretopicssuchascolour, darkandlight,composition,thefourelementsandmetaphoricalrepresentationsofloss andofhope.Groupmembersthenbegintocaptureimagesoftheirownexperiencesof livingwithbraininjury.Throughthelensoftheircameras,groupmembershavetheopportunitytoponderandfocuson theirownperceptionsofwhatbraininjuryhasmeanttothem. Throughthecollectivelensofthegroup,clientsareinvitedtoshare andexploreimagesofhopeandresilienceintheirownlives, capturingforevertheirownunderstandingoftheuniquejourney theyareon. AsapilotprogramforBrainCareCentre,theExpressiveArtsGrief andLossTherapyGrouphasthepotentialtoreachouttoabroad rangeofBCCsclientele;individualswhostrugglewithgriefand loss,individualsforwhomaphasiacreateslanguagebarrierstoself expression,andthoseindividualswhoseekfurtherinsightsinto deningselfidentityandcreatingthatnewnormal.BCCsslogan, DefyLimitations!encouragesclientstoovercomebarriersto healthycoping,andtocreatethehealthyandresilientlifethey seek.Thisgrouphasthecapacitytoopendoors,fosterinsight,and empowersclientstomoveforwardinnewandhealthyways.
