October 5, 2008 Hello, Our son Cody is 4.

3 now and I originally noticed white spots, pits and browning around the edges of his top front 4 teeth teeth and one brown spot on a lower tooth when he was about 1.5. This was so disheartening because he never ate junk food of any kind (only whole organic foods with lots of raw vegetables, whole grains, breast milk, etc.) and no sugar or juices. Of course, I was just sick over this and stressed over it all the time and blamed my bad genes (my father had terrible teeth). I went to about 5 traditional dentists and one holistic dentist. All told me that it was caused by night nursing, which I strongly disagreed with. They wanted to x-ray and use fluoride; I do not agree with either. They all wanted me to wean him but I knew that was a ridiculous idea; he weaned himself around three. Also, since this is such a common theme with those of us who find this site (dentists ignorant about breastfeeding and wanting us to wean immediately and blame us for their decay). I would like to recommend the Mothering Magazine site for articles on the subject. Though I'm sure that there are other great breastfeeding information resources out there, like LLL (La Leche League), mothering magazine does such a great job of informing! http://www.mothering.com/search.html? cx=013923525895590915420%3Ax2lqi1tc4iw&cof=\ FORID%3A11&q=breastfeeding+and+cavities&sa=Search#1325 I especially love the first article in this search "Big Bad Cavities: Breastfeeding Is Not the Cause" this would be a great subject line if you have to e-mail them. Feel free to print out copies and hand them to those dentists who want studies or proof that breastfeeding does not cause ECC and even to the ones who don't request it. Wouldn't it be a great idea to print them out and leave them sitting in those dentists' offices for the parents to read while waiting? My dentists were not interested in what I had to say on the subject and preferred to stick with their uneducated opinions on breastfeeding. I think that I may have recounted my horrific experience with one dentist in particular in some past posts here (from a couple of years ago) but I choose not to recall it now. Though, I would love to tell him that I have healed my son's decay. It actually may have been healed by the time he examined Cody but I don't believe that particular dentist would have recognized it, nor admitted that it could have been possible to do.

When Cody was about 20 months old, I went to a ND (Naturopahtic Doctor) in Orange County, CA who gave us the following treatment plan. Please note that this was OUR specific plan and I would suggest that you contact an ND or decide what plan will work best for your own healing philosophy. After all, the site here is called Doctor yourself but I am only passing it along..I am no ND. It is a link for the cell salts by Schuessler, think it is just informative: http://www.doctoryourself.com/cell_salts.html Note: Our ND distributes cell salts by a company out of Belgium called UNDA because he feels they are of a superior quality. http://www.forresthealth.com/store/product.php?productid=17452 (I just googled it and found this, but have not used this site) Our initial treatment plan: 1. Calcium carbonicum-200K : Give 5 granules 4 x in one day, then every other week 5 granules once 2. Calcarea fluorica 6X: 1 twice daily 3. Calcarea phos 6X: 1 twice daily 4. Silicea 6X: 1 twice daily 5. Children's chewable multi viatmin: 2 daily with food This was our treatment for about 1.5 years and now we do a CalciumMagnesium liquid, 1/2 TBS every evening, along with the multi vitamins. We have stopped the cell salts for now but when we see the ND again, we will reevaluate what he is needing, though I don't think we will be using those same salts anymore. When Cody was 2.5, I found the alternativekidsteeth site and implemented the following based on what I learned: -Weston Price Diet (though previous to this we had also eaten a whole foods, slow cooked organic diet with meat) -Cod liver oil (did this for only about 6 months because I was putting it in Orange Juice to make it more palatable and felt that was also not great for his teeth so discontinued the CLO and OJ). -High vitamin butter oil -MI Paste-rub it on his teeth after each brushing -Brush with Spry infant gel mixed with Green clay -Brush his teeth 4 times a day (And, on this subject, for the member that

feels so badly about having held her child down to brush I would like to offer that I have always had to hold my son down (gently). I am very much an attachment parent (never any cry it out method) and we laugh, play and sing the whole time and neither he nor I see this as traumatic at all. He will still voluntarily lie on the bathroom floor to have his teeth brushed. This works great for us. -Xylitol-a little spoonful a few times a week In June of this year, Cody's teeth were still brown on those same teeth though they seemed stable (I still thought it was active decay just progressing very slowly, the problem areas were hard, not soft so I thought that I should try the Healozone treatment. I have been diligently searching for a "real" holistic dentist locally for about 2 years, with no success. They will say that they are holistic but end up being "cosmetic" dentists. It seemed that I would have to make the long trip to Pocatello Idaho (850 miles) to see Dr. Misner that came so highly recommended from other members in this group. I wrote him a long e-mail to let him know that my son was a late talker with an expressive-receptive delay and he may not understand what is being asked of him so he may not be cooperative and may scream the whole time. I had even planned that I would need to make a second trip because I was so worried that my son was not going to be able to sit still and quiet in a dental chair. When we arrived, Dr. Misner took us into a private room where we all discussed Cody's diet and teeth issues. Dr. Misner and his assistant spent a long time just talking, playing and joking around with Cody which made him much more comfortable. Once Cody seemed ready, he just put his head back on dad's lap, opened his mouth wide, let them prop it open with a dental tool, and let them examine his teeth for about 5 minutes. I was in shock! I had prepared Cody for this visit by playing dentist for about 3 months previous to that but didn't think he was really understanding me, apparently he was. Dr. Misner informed us that Cody would not need Healozone and that the decay had stopped. Say what? I'm not sure specifically what stopped it, if it was one thing or a combination of things but I couldn't believe it; to me, it was nothing short of miraculous. He also gave us some great tips for caring for Cody's teeth with a holistic approach, which is what I had been looking for for so long! I highly recommend seeing him to any of you for his gentle approach, thoroughness, knowledge and kindness! http://www.wellness.com/dir/2163934/dentist/id/pocatello/kidds-dental

So, that's our story and while it is a relief to know that the decay has stopped for now, I remain very watchful of any change in his teeth. And, they do not look "perfect"; you can see the brown areas on the edges of a few teeth, they are "worn away" a bit and one of the teeth is a bit chipped away. But, he's so cute, you hardly notice it (mom's opinion of course) though he does do lots of big smiles. I hope that some of this has helped and can help others here. Each case is so different I know, but I really always BELIEVED that we could heal the decay. I will attempt to photograph his teeth (I tried this before and he would not stay still long enough for me to get a clear shot) for the files. He never stops moving. Best to all, Michele and Cody (4.3)
