FLOWING FLAWLESS

PUMP
Pump is the equipment which transfers the flowable media. For Eg : Here, in this case, if the fulid transfer from one place another place takes 10 min. But we need to transfer the fluid in 2 min, then here for transferring the fluid with in no time, we use PUMP.

Filled in 10 min without Pump. Parts of a Pump:

Filled in 2 minutes with Pump

Impeller Shaft Bearing Mechanical Seal / Gland Packing Coupling

6. Volute Casing / Pump Casing 7. Coupling spider 8. Oil Filler Plug 9. Oil Cup

For running of the pump, Impeller must be submerged in the fluid. Impeller will rotate with shaft. Mainly, the pump has 3 elements: 1. Pump Housing 2. Rotating element 3. Bearing Housing

1. Pump Housing : The fluid flows from Suction end to Delivery end.
Liquid is taken in to pump through Suction flange and thrown out of the pump from Delivery flange.

1. Delivery Flange 2. Suction Flange 5. Wear Plate / Wear Ring / Casing Ring

3. Drain Plug 4. Delivery Plug 6. Seal housing/ Stuffing box

Due to continuous rotation of fluid inside the pump, there is a chance of wear & tear of the surface inside the pump. So, avoid to change the entire pump housing, we can change the wear plate, where the maximum wear and tear takes place. Different companies use different types of flanges. They mainly use standards like, DIN : 4 no., 18mm ANSI The flanges has mostly the common features like, 50mm DIN. DIN depends upon the elements like OD, ID, Thickness, No. of holes, dia of the hole, PCD( Pitch Centre Distance). It is measured in the following way. The distance between the arrow indicates PCD.

Drain Plug : To let out the water outside the pump. Delivery Plug : To let in water into the pump. Stuffing Box : It is situated at the backside of the Impeller, it is also called as seal housing. Seal housings are 2 types: conical seal housing and cylindrical seal housing. Conical seal housing: It can be used for normal applications only. Ordinary mechanical seal can be installed. No gland plate required. Stationary seal component will sit in housing rotary part will be installed on sleeve. API plan11 is more effective in this housing. API

plan62 provision can be made for external flushing. Radial clearance sufficient for the seal, control of vapour built up, control of solids in suspension, adequate flow conditions to remove heat effectively. It is cheaper in cost. Cylindriacal seal housing: Separate gland plate is required, can be installed for gland packing, ordinary single, multicoil spring mechanical seals, metal bellow seals for hot temperature liquids and double mechanical seals for highly corrosive/ hazardous liquids. It is a costlier process, separate API plan provisions and pipes required. 2. Rotating element: The Rotating element is the most important item of the pump. It mostly consists of many wear & tear parts. It consists of the following parts : Shaft : It is the main component to hold the Impeller. Impeller : It is the main part to be rotated to get the discharge at respective heads. Bearing Inner / Outer : These are used to rotate the shaft and there are of 2 bearings: non drive end/ impeller side bearings & drive end/motor side/ coupling side bearing Shaft Coupling key : It is used to hold the coupling with motor. Shaft Impeller key : It is used to hold the impeller with shaft Impeller lock nut : It is used to lock and rotate the Impeller with the shaft To rotate the rotating element, there is a small gap needed, through Which the liquid may come out. So, most of them use gland packing. This is used for lesser cost liquids. For costlier fluids Mechanical seal is used for prevention of leakage from the pumps. Another method Expeller Ring is the one which is reverse rotation of the second outside small Impeller. It gets back the flow liquid. It is used for slurry applications. Impeller Wear Ring : Where there is wear & tear in the Impeller surface then a special ring is available, called Impeller Wear Ring. Sleeve : It is used to avoid the wear and tear place of the shaft. If the material inside is spoiling the surface of the volute casing, Then there is a need to use a material called volute liner, which avoids wear & tear of the inner volute casing. Volute Liner is cheaper than the entire casing replacement.

3. Bearing Housing : It is the housing of the Bearings. Other than Pump housing, it is only the stationary part. It consists of the following parts: Support Plate : It used to support the housing. Gland Plate : It is used to prevent the leakage of the liquids from the pump.

Bearings : Bearings are of 3 types: Roller Bearing & Double Roller Bearing These type of bearings rotate side ways only. Tapper Roller Bearing & Double Tapper Roller Bearing These bearings rotate on the concept of line of contact.

Ball Bearing & Double Ball Bearing These bearings rotate on the concept of point of contact

Bearing Lubrication : For, better performance there is a sealed grease which is used for free movement of the bearings. These are lifeless. The bearing lubrication may be of two types: Greased Bearing : For every 500 hours grease is to be pumped inside. Oil Cooled Bearing : Inside, there will be a oil cup, fill it to some extent, there is a let for air outside. When the oil is exhausted, then it is should be oiled again.

Coming to self Priming & Non-self Priming. In self Priming foot valve is inbuilt in pump itself

If the suction opening is above the Impeller eye, then it is self priming. If it is to direct to the Impeller eye, then it is non self Priming. Types of Pumps: -- Back Pull out Pump -- Multistage Pump -- Submersible Pump -- Pulp Pump -- Magnetic Drive Pump -- Gear Pump -- Flexible Impeller Pump -- Vaccum Pump -- Compressure Pump -- Non-metallic Pump -- Mixed Flow Pump --Barrel Pump Basically Pumps are of 2 types: 1) Centrifugal pumps : It rotates round and then operates . If delivery closes, pressure goes back. 2) Positive Displacement pump : It moves or throws the position. If delivery closes, then the pump will blast. All positive displacement pumps are self priming pumps. -- Slurry Pump -- Vertical Turbine pump -- Horizontal Split casing Pump -- Vertical Pump -- Screw Pump -- Canned Motor Pump -- Piston Pump -- Blower Pump -- Hose / Peristallic Pump -- Dosing Pump -- Axel flow Pump -- AOD Pump

Certain Parameters are to be known to select which type of pump is to be used, which are as follows: Flow : It can also be termed as Capacity, Discharge measured in m3/hr,lps,cumec,cusec,Gallons/sec. Head : Suction & Discharge head is to be known in mts/ kgpercm2 Discharge Pressure : Certain pressure is required to start a system, called as Discharge pressure.

Temperature : Temperature of the liquid to be known, to get the accurate type of the system (pump) to be used. Density / Specific gravity : It is the weight of the liquid with respect to volume. Viscosity : It indicates the sliding distance. Centistrokes/Centipoise is used as its units. PH : It is used to decide to go for Metallic or Non-metallic pump. % of solids : To know the % of the solids in the liquid. Max. Particle Size : By knowing this, the size of vanes for passage of the particals, so deciding the impeller and suction & delivery sizes can be known. Suction on Pipe Line / Delivery Pipe line: Always this suction on pipeline should be more than exsisting size. For eg: actual is 3 X 2. Then 3 X 2 consideration is 90% accurate, 3 X 4 consideration is 100% accurate. Duty : It is the measure of no. of hours that pump works. It is used to decide the lubricants to be used for the pump. Area : To decide which type of motor can be suggested. Phase Avaliable : It is used to decide the electricity on which the pump works. Prefereble RPM : It is nothing but the speed of the pump can be decided. The RPM is measured as 4 divisions : 2 pole-3000 RPM , 4 pole 1500 RPM, 6 pole 1000 RPM , 8 pole 750 RPM. Lower the RPM leads lesser Wear & tear. The more the RPM is, the less is the size of the pump for the same hydraulics. Wetted parts : The parts that are submersed into the liquids are to be known. This is used to decide the MOC (Material of construction) to suggest. It should be known whether Impeller, stuffing Box, casing wear plate, pump Housing, Drain Plug, Impeller cap nut, Gland Plate, Mechanical Seal, Sleeve all these parts withstand for the liquid or not. Air line / water line availability : If Mechanical seal is given, then air / water should be given. Friction Loss : This is used to calculate the head. Generally, friction loss will be 5% of the pipe line. Liquid details : The pumping liquid is to be known which is used for deciding the MOC of the pump. -- Specific gravity : The specific gravity of the liquid is to be known which is used as loading factor in deciding the HP of the motor.

Here, in this case, both the liquids are of same volume, but their weight will differ. Here, specific gravity can be calculated as, Specifica gravity = Jagerry Weight / Water weight

-- Viscosity : If viscosity is more than 50, then go for centrifugal pumps. If not, go for positive displacement pump. -- Consistency : The consistency of he liquid is of two types , Homogeneous & Hetrogeneous. Any centrifugal pump can be used upto 6, closed impeller pump can be used upto 1.5, Open Impeller pump can be used upto 4 to 6.5. Suction head : The suction head may be postitive, negative or flodded.

The head can be calculated in the following format: Head = Suction Head + Delivery Head + Friction Loss (Generally friction loss will be 5% of the pipe line length) Back Pull out Pump : Its back can be pulled out separately. It has a overhanging Impeller (or) cantilever pump. A type of Back Pull out is a Centerline Pump, which is as follows:

These Centerline Pumps are used in case of Hot Liquids. Non metallic Pumps : When Thermal conductivity is not there, it is to use Nonmetallic pumps. Multistage Pump : In case of Multistage Pump, we use more than one impeller. There are different types of impellers which are used under different applications: The Impeller will have diameter (D) and thickness. If D increases then the Head Increases

If Width increases then discharge increases. HP depends upon the weight of the Impeller and specific gravity

These type of Multistage pumps are used in Height head applications. There are two types of pumping: Series pumping Parallel Pumping

Submersible Pump : This type of pumps are immersed into the water, so they are called submersible pumps. In some cases, there is a necessity to keep the pump inside the water, for such conditions, we use submersible pumps.

For these pumps, we may use two types of motor, - Air Cooled Motor : It burns if water is inside the motor - Water Cooled Motor : It burns if air is inside the motor Pulp Pump : It is used to lift up the pulp matter. Open Impellers are used for these type of pumps. Slurry Pump : These type of pumps also use open Impellers only. These are used for especially Ash applications. Ash material id Abrassive & Corresive in nature. So, there is necessity to use a special type of MOC like, Cast Iron 250 BHN Ni-hard - 500 BHN 27% Chrome 650 BHN Diamond - 2500 BHN Where BHN indicates the hardness of the material Vertical Turbine Pump : We use Vertical Turbine pump when there is more suction heads and high discharge. In these types of pumps, the rotation parts are more.

Horizontal Split Casing Pump : It is also called as HS pump. These type of pumps are splitted horizontally to view the internal parts.

Vertical Pump : If the pump is positioned in a vertical manner, then we can say it as a vertical pump.

Magnetic drive pump : These are the pumps which run on magnets.

Screw Pump : In screw pumps, the liquid will only flow one side, the liquid cannot be get back. If delivery closes for any positive displacement pumps, then it would be dangerous because of high pressure, so that the pump can be broken. In Screw pumps there are three types of pumps : - Single screw type - Twin screw type : It is used for high pressure liquids but low viscous - Triple screw type : It is used for viscous liquids with very high pressure applications.

Gear Pump : It is of two types - Internal gear pump : These are used for high viscous liquids. Eg: Paints - External gear pump : These are used for low viscous liquids. Eg: Oil

Canned Motor Pump : It is same as Magnetic Driven pump. It is also one type of API pumps Flexible Impeller Pump : This type of pumps can be used only if the physical properties of the liquids are same, before & after pumping

Piston Pumps : These are used for Immediate flow and high pressure applications

Vaccum Pump : These pumps are used to take out the vaccum if any in the fluid while pumping. These pumps surface will be very smooth and Blue Match is used to test the smoothness of the surface of the pumps. These vaccum pumps are used in some of the self priming pumps.

Blower pump : These are used to take air out of the pump.

Compressure Pump:

Hose / Peristallic pump : These pumps works on the cannot get back principle.

Dosing Pump : It is used to maintain the dosage to add into the liquid uniformly.

Mixed Flow Pumps : This pump is the combinations of two pumps : - Arial - Radial. It means two types of impellers may be used for this type of pumps. Barrel Pump : This type of pumps are used used to get the liquids from barrels. AOD pump : It is a Air Open Diagonistic pump. Coupling Selection : Coupling is to be fitted to the shafts of the pump & motor and hence the dimensions of the shafts play a key role in the selection of the couplings. RPM vs KW also to be considered for the selection. For Example : The diameters of the shafts are to be considered. Here, the shaft diameter of the motor is larger than the shaft dia of the pump. Hence motor shaft dia is to be calculated for the coupling selection. Motor selection : On knowing the head (mts) & flow(m3/hr) requirement of the pump, the Motor can be selected under the following ways : -- Motor in KW can be calculated as,

Head X Flow / 367 X0.55 -- Motor in HP can be calculated as, Head X Flow / 234 X 0.55 Ampere Selection : The Ampere selection can be done in 3 heads and also depends upon the starter used. Noraml Ampere, No load Ampere, Maximum Ampere. Calculation of Amperes running HP pump in DOL 1. Normal Ampere 2. No load Ampere 3. Maximum Ampere : 1.3 X HP = ___ Amp. : 0.43 X HP = ___ Amp : 2.2 X HP = ____ Amp

Calculation of Amperes running HP pump in Star Delta 1. Normal Ampere 2. No load Ampere 3. Maximum Ampere : 0.9 X HP = ___Amp : 0.3 X HP = ___ Amp : 1.53 X HP = ____ Amp

These are mostly called as IDP pumps. Available in Horizontal, Vertical, Magnetic Drive, Self Priming, centerline mounted, recessed, mono block. These are available in Other than CI material. We have a specialization in these pumps compare to others as follows : Shaft length is very less, so shaft deflection is very less. Lesser shaft length and heavy duty shaft leads low L3/D4 ratio (shaft stiffness/3.51 for frame 1 and 1.78 for frame 2) to be extended the mechanical seal life. 0.05mm shaft deflection at the seal face. Shaft deflection = 64 Fr L3/ 3ED4. Normally on account of seals, the pumps failure is caused about 30%. Heavy duty shafts longer in life for the rotating parts. By default semi open impellers will allow volatile/dirty liquids Impellers are giving in Duplex SS for higher life than the other SS316wetted parts. Impellers have threaded type locking system which leads to lower NPSH for maximum suction lifts. Impellers have threaded type locking system which leads to higher effeciencies for free entry of liquid in to the suction port. Constant R & D activities at Bangalore leads to continous upgradations in the pumps with least lead period with web based selections. Twisted vane Impellers with precision manufacturing methods can avoid wear rings with consistence quality and higher efficiency.

Twisted wane Impellers reduce risk of blockage, excellent solids handling with lesser discharges also can be handled compare to closed impellers. Bearings are larger in size which leads free rotation and extended life for the rotating parts and lesser break downs. Normally called as Elephant Bearing housing. Normally pumps will fail on account of bearings 50% in the industry, so we have provided bigger bearing housing. Conical seal housing better API plans for 11 & 62 and cheaper in cost.
