Gewrztraminer can leave many a wine drinker confused. With an assertively perfumed nose but a surprisingly full body and an even slightly bitter complexity on the palate, the approach suggests youre in for something wildly feminine but the full experience is decidedly more masculine. BK Summer Series Gewrztraminer is precisely this. With the heady aroma of jasmine blossoms but a gravelly, textured voice, weve dubbed it our Eddie Izzard an executive transvestite in heels and a floral coat. Saturday, December 6th in 1969 gave birth to the Altamont Speedway Free Festival. The Rolling Stones had been speaking for weeks about capping their 1969 tour with a massive free concert. The venue had not come together and just one day before the Festival date, the new owners of the Altamont Speedway, East of Livermore agreed to host. With just 24 hours to prepare for 300,000 people, a rock n roll free-for-all was on the cards. The San Francisco chapter of the Hells Angels were paid $500 worth of free beer to hold the crowd together and then the rock n roll began. The Altamont Speedway Rock n Roll festival was built upon dreams, love for music and essential right to freedom. Certainly everything does not always go to plan and making wine is no exception. We set out to create wines that hold onto the Altamont dream, boundaries will be broken and our love for what we make will be the only guide. The Credaro family first settled in Margaret River in 1922 as a pioneering family to the region, after migrating from Northern Italy. Initially involved in farming and the timber industry, small plots of vines were planted to provide the family with table wine. Cesar Credaro was the first generation of the family to reside in the area of Margaret River and he worked in the one of the first vineyards in the region. Though it no longer exists today, it was a five acre vineyard that was established around 1915, near Commonage Road. Cesar, with the help of the family took some cuttings from the Yallingup vineyard where he worked and planted an acre of the Italian Red Variety (Fragola) at Carbunup. If we imagine for a moment that, as a vintage, 2010 was 1985 excessive and gaudy then 2011 was a full decade further on in style. All wines are grown and all wines are crafted, but often only one or the other of these histories is truly evident. 2011 was an exceptionally difficult vintage in the Adelaide Hills and precious little of the notoriously fickle Pinot Noir even made it to bottling. After struggling valiantly through the wettest, coldest growing season in memory, it seemed only fair to let this wine sit quietly on skins for 256 days five times longer than normal. The result is a wine that owes considerably more to vintage and technique than terroir: linear, powerful, aromatic and bone dry. A tribute to the marriage of nature and nurture.

In 2010 we thought Jim Morrison or Russell Brand, undeniably sexy but with a loud mouth, an over-confident strut and in need of a haircut and rehab. 2011 provided the makeover. The self-assurance remains but a year of hard knocks in the vineyard has tempered this wine an air of prudence and empathy. Warm, sensual, even contemplative. Our audacious rock star has wised up. Fairbourne Estate Ltd is a specialist New Zealand wine company owned by Sarah Inkersell and Russell Hooper. We aspire to produce world class wine with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The name, Fairbourne, is where we live on a north facing hillside overlooking the vineyards of Marlboroughs Wairau Valley. Our decision to start Fairbourne came about with the confidence of our collective industry experiences and the desire to create world class wine with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The name, Two Tails, has a very personal origin. One of our interests is fly fishing. We were fishing a back country stream and saw a pair of rare black indigenous fantails (piwakawaka). While marvelling at their enchanting dance and aerobatic ways, they totally captivated us. The next day, Sarah commissioned a talented artist to visit the stream and paint the Fantails as a surprise for Russell. Several months later, the painting was finished and now hangs proudly in our home. The black fantail painting is inspiration for the Two Tails label. Our desire to specialise with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc comes from our years working with and acknowledging the unique characters of this popular wine variety. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is what we know, it is where we live and it is where our passion lies. Further, we believe there is more to discover from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc than the widely recognized style. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is the cornerstone variety of the New Zealand and Marlborough wine industry. In a relatively short period of time it has become the style that other new world producers, and an increasing number from the old world, aspire to produce, associate with and benchmark. However, we believe Marlboroughs best is yet to come. Our business commits to specialization. Our familiarity with the soils and sites of Marlborough has evolved. Weve identified vineyards growing character consistent and intensely flavoured Sauvignon Blanc. From these, our brands Fairbourne and Two Tails reflect the purity, strength, clarity and uniqueness of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Our future embraces sustainable relationships, from the soils to the shelf. We are developing new markets with importers recognizing our experience and aspirations, as well as the individual qualities of our wines. Fairbourne........is savvy

Winemaker/Owner Tim Geddes and his wife Amanda, a trained chef, bring considerable experience to the food and wine game. Tim began his career in 1992 in his hometown of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand with three vintages as a cellar hand. The enjoyment of this experience and his curiosity led him to move directly to Australia where he completed the Oenology degree at Adelaide University. Dual vintages in the Barossa and Hunter Valley were woven between settling down in coastal McLaren Vale, where he has been a contract winemaker since 2002. By 2007 Tim leased a 500 ton winery which has become the home base for making his clients wines, as well as his own Seldom Inn range and the Geddes label, which is only made in the best years. His wines have been awarded 12 trophies and countless medals. The lifted aromas of spice, cherry, rose petal and tar are derived from the Grenache and the sense of depth of plums and pepper comes from the Shiraz. The Mataro adds earthy meaty notes and with all three varieties combined form a complex nose. This is done by keeping the juice at a temperature that is quite cool and allows the fermentation to proceed at a slow pace ensuring that all of the fruit flavours are preserved throughout the process. Separately, we ferment some of the fruit the old fashioned way, in old French oak barrels. The result is a wine that displays a clean fresh finish balancing both fruit flavours and acidity from tank fermentation with nuances of rich, quite textural flavours on the mid palate from the barrel fermentation. 11.9% 90 Points James Halliday 2013. Ingram Rd Pinot Noir is the direct beneficiary of this experience. Following traditional winemaking processes, utilizing full French oak maturation our Ingram Pinot Noir display rich varietal characters on the nose, sweet cherry and strawberry flavours on the front and mid palate with a savory, earthy (spicy) finish on the back palate. Thanks to the French oak, the wine has a wonderful full textural mouth weight and long lasting finish. Food: Twice cooked duck with braised witlof and mandarin.

A Merlot that captures the uniqueness of this variety. Deep, dark ruby red colour. A nose that displays those toasty, nutty and vanilla characters that Merlot is famous for. The palate is a virtual Christmas pudding or fruit cake. Rich blackcurrant, blackberry and stewed plums with hints of lighter redcurrant and raspberry flavours abound. Due to the extended time on skins post fermentation, the finish (which can sometimes be a little lacking in Merlot) is long with smooth structured tannins and toasty oak characters. Food: Wattleseed crusted venison with fig compote.

Journeys End Vineyards are located in South Australia, an internationally renowned region noted for producing sunshine in a glass - wines with superb, ripe fruit flavours that the world has fallen in love with. Whilst Journeys End Vineyards has a traditional Australian spread of wine styles, the wines do not come from the same vineyard site. There are of course good reasons for this, and they form the basis of Journeys Ends winemaking philosophy.

Keith Tulloch is a fourth generation Hunter Valley Winemaker, so the soils of Pokolbin and the wines of the Hunter Valley run deep in his blood. Keith is a qualified Winemaker, a Wine Judge, and Wine Consultant. In 1997 Keith began his own company, and produces wines under his own label focusing only on the traditional Hunter Valley varieties - Semillon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, and more recently. Cabernet Sauvignon - sourcing grapes from only the best vineyard sites. These wines are hand-made with meticulous care, and epitomize the best qualities of Hunter Valley wine. All wines released have the style, balance, structure and integrity necessary for graceful maturation and cellaring. Winery production is very limited, with a combined output of only 12000 dozen per year. For Keith the greatest reward has been found - making his own wines with a unique stamp of personality, power and integrity - away from the mainstream, and with an individual style and flair. Awarded a 5-star rating by James Halliday for being 'an outstanding winery capable of producing wines of the highest calibre'.

The name Koonara comes from the name of our family's property.1906, Henry Albert and Alice Jane Reschke came to Coonawarra to build a life for their family. Nearly 100 years on, our family still live in Coonawarra. The Cattle stud on the property is still here, but the vineyards and wine have been our focused passion since 1988. Every year since 1991, 30 Cases of Koonara has been made for family and friends. Finally in 1999, we decided to make our wine available for the public, so we made a very limited number of cases, held back to give our wines a chance to mature in the bottle. Our vineyards are naturally kept at an average of 2 tonnes or less an acre (no bunch selection or thinning).

Bendigo / Macedon Ranges, Victoria. Est 1974. Winemaker: Cameron Leith www.passingclouds.com.au
The story begins in 1973 when Graeme Leith and Sue Mackinnon, great friends and partners, decided that they wanted even more challenges in life than were possible for them in their careers as an electrical contractor and a journalist. They wanted to brave the elements, face the challenges of the land, and like so many before them pursue the holy grail of "the best wine in the world".They chose a site in a dry area north west of Bendigo on old gold diggings, where the soil had been dug over a hundred and twenty years before by goldminers. There they planted their vines, initially Shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, to make a classic Aussie blend. They were successful, and the first wine they showed at the Melbourne Wine Show, the 1982 Shiraz Cabernet won Gold. Since then they have won additional acclaim for their straight Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noirs. As one wine writer said: I have a lot of sample bottles on my table at the end of the day, but whenever theres Passing Clouds, its the one we drink with dinner.

www.fairbourne.co.nz

Made dry with a tropical fruit expression and balanced with Marlboroughs natural acidity. Two Tails is an approachable, expressive and flavoursome Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes from each vineyard are managed separately in the winery. They are gently rotated in the press, not squeezed, to release free-run juice. Their juices are fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected yeast strains to capture their individual fruit expressions. Selective blending of the fermented wines allows for the finished wine to express its southern valleys origin and its varietal characters in a consistent mouth filling style. Serve: Chill to between 12 and 14 degrees then serve and enjoy. Aroma: Nectarine and guava with fresh crushed limes. Taste: Quenching white stone fruits with balanced natural acidity. Finish: Dry with a finely textured and flavoursome aftertaste. Oysters and salmon are a natural accompaniment for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and this wine is no exception. Also exciting is a tomato based salsa with avocado and a touch of chilli, as is a citrus dressed, fresh green salad with crumbled feta and crispy smoked bacon. 12.5% GOLD MEDAL Concours Mondial du Sauvignon 2011 Wine Show
