Township manager presents
$2.2M road plan. PAGE 2
SHANNON CAULFIELD/The Marlton Sun
A class of about 20 children plays with a parachute between reading stories on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Evesham Library. Holly
Hoskins read multiple stories to the class about various jungle animals, teaching about the sounds they make. In addition to being
read to, the kids danced to the Chicken Dance, sang Wheels on the Bus, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and said the rhyme, Five
Little Monkeys.

Schools
to spend
$2.1M
on buses
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
The Evesham Township School
District is in the process of bid-
ding for a new fleet of buses due
to the vehicles old age.
In December, the board of edu-
cation voted to investigate the
cost of privatizing bus services.
We are looking for options.
Option A is to buy new buses. Op-
tion B would be able to contract it
out. I wont know until we get the
information, Board of Educa-
tion President Sandy Student told
The Sun in December. If we
dont look to save money, were
not being responsible.
The allowable life span of a
school bus is 15 years, according
to state law.
Starting with the 2014-15
school year, the district will need
to begin to replace approximately
21 buses, at an estimated cost of
about $2.1 million. Not all the
buses are due to be replaced the

The Marlton Sun
Evesham Township Manager
Bill Cromie presented the 2013
recommended road plan, estimat-
ed to cost $2.2 million, at the Feb.
19 meeting.
The project will be funded
through a capital bond ordinance.
This means borrowing over 20
years, the life expectancy of roads
at todays extremely low interest
rates, Cromie said.
One of the townships primary
responsibilities is maintaining
the roadways.
The township has 175 miles of
municipal roads, many of which
are in need of repair, according to
the presentation.
Goals of the project staff will
be to identify all available road
money and recommend a road
program that will spend responsi-
bly where the money will have
the most impact, Cromie said.
The roads that will be repaired
were based on the pavement rat-
ing system, a system all munici-
palities use. The condition of the
road, safety considerations and
accident history, traffic volume,
number of homes, length of the
roadway, last date paved and
grant availability, rated from very
poor to excellent, determine
which roads will be considered.
The improvement project will
be done over the course of four
years through 2017.
Kettle Run Road, Sycamore Av-
enue, South Elmwood Road, Ram-
sey Avenue, Kent Avenue and
Evans Road are all slated for im-
provement this year.
In 2014, Kent Avenue from the
dead end to Palmetto, Knox
Boulevard, Dutch Road, Lakeside
Drive and one and a half miles of
Kettle Run Road are scheduled to
be repaired.
In 2015, South Cropwell Road
from Marlton Pike to Cherry Hill,
Ridgemount Drive, Richmond
Place, Shady Lane and Coventry
Circle East are scheduled to be re-
paired.
The final two years of the
repaving include Merion Road
from Wyndmere between Merion
and Concord, Concord
Road, Chestnut Avenue, Pelham
Road from Willow Ridge Road and
Foxwood Lane.
Marsham Drive, Mayville
Lane, Meadowview Circle, Thorn-
wood Drive and Nottingham Road
will be the final roads repaired,
according to the plan.
We may make some minor
changes to that based on what
council would like to do. Theyd
like to see some more residential
roadways included in that pack-
age, Cromie said.
In other news, the sign ordi-
nance wording is still being
worked on.
Work on the resolution will be
done with the solicitor to come up
with the wording of an ordinance
to give staff leeway in how we ap-
prove different signs to better pro-
mote business in town, Cromie
said. We dont want to discour-
age business in town, we want to
promote it.
The ordinance will be on a fu-
ture agenda, according to Cromie.
In other news, the township
council surprised Mayor Randy
Brown with a proclamation for
his accomplishments with the
Baltimore Ravens.
The proclamation was read by
councilman Ken DAndrea on be-
half of the rest of the council.
He was very humble, Cromie
said.
Eighth-grade student govern-
ment winners and members from
the American Cancer Societys
Relay for Life were also given
proclamations.
Relay for Life is slated for May
13.
The next township council
meeting will be held March 5 at
6:30 p.m. at the municipal build-
ing located at 984 Tuckerton
Road.

Help and support of many made
Wine, Dine & Win successful
The Evesham Education Foundation
held its second annual Wine, Dine & Win!
fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 1.
Well more than 300 attendees sampled
hundreds of wines from around the world,
fine foods and had the opportunity to try
lady luck playing various casino games for
the opportunity to win tickets for our gift
basket auction featuring more than 50 gift
basket prizes!
This event would not be possible without
the help and support of so many individu-
als and businesses throughout the local
community. We thank our event sponsor;
WineWorks of Marlton, WineWorks Wine
Director Charlie Beatty, and the
WineWorks ownership for their commit-
ment to the success of this event.
Without their help and generosity, our
event would have been impossible to pull
off.
We want to thank our outside food spon-
sors; Flemings Steakhouse and Wine Bar,
Brio of Marlton, Carrabbas of Marlton,
Good Foods To Go, and A la Carte Catering
for their wonderful food samplings and
generosity.
There are so many individuals and busi-
nesses that were sponsors or donated gift
baskets too numerous to mention individu-
ally, but again, their support helped make
this event a success.
Additionally, we are grateful for all the
hard work and time put in by our event
committee, which consisted of more than
15 dedicated individuals who worked tire-
lessly. Whether it was canvassing local
business for donations and sponsorships,
preparing our outstanding gift baskets,
selling attendance tickets or a myriad of
other necessary aspects to put on an event
of this size and complexity, all performed
admirably.
Because of the scope of this fundraiser,
we needed more than 60 volunteers to work
the night of the event. We were so fortu-
nate to have many district teachers, admin-
istrators and support staff as well as area
residents volunteer their time to make our
event a success.
Last but certainly not least, we want to
thank those in the community who attend-
ed, having a great time participating and
giving us the financial support we need.
The Evesham Education Foundation
was formed in 1995 by a group of con-
cerned residents and business leaders for
the purpose of enhancing the educational
opportunities for all students in The Eve-
sham Township School District.
Over the years the Foundation has con-
tributed well more than $1 million to fund
programs like CAPPS (Coordinated Arts
Program for Primary Students), Genesis
Counseling Program and The Metamor-
phosis Program in addition to the purchase
of art and science carts, pianos, Active

Marlton Elks
supports special needs
Marlton Elks has moved for-
ward in its support and participa-
tion in the Burlington County
special needs community.
This year, Marlton Elks grew
its support in several ways.
Over the past 35 years, Marlton
Elks have supported and promot-
ed events that help this needy
group of adolescents to provide
events such as Christmas parties
or other family outings.
Over the past few years the
Elks Christmas party has grown
to over 30 participants and fami-
lies, that are able to be enter-
tained and a visit with Santa, food
and fun.
Moving beyond family parties,
in 2011 Marlton Elks held a golf
outing, headed by Tim Ori(Eve-
sham), Curt Warren (Evesham)
and ER Jack Fistori (Evesham)
all took steps to grow the golf out-
ing and the proceeds to the spe-
cial needs community.
New Jersey Elks runs a profes-
sionally staffed camp, Camp
Moore, for the special needs com-
munity for all lodges throughout
the state, and Marlton has grown
its participation by sending more
campers, free of cost, to give their
families a respite for one or more
weeks each year. In 2011, Marlton
sent eight campers, but in 2012
the lodge sent 10 campers, and
this year has its sites sent on 12 or
more campers. All costs from the
camp are free to the families. This
donation comes from the Marlton
Elks Golf Outing.
The Marlton Elks Golf Outing
in 2012 went even further with its
donation. From the August 2012
outing at Ramblewood Country
Club $10,000 was donated toward

Rider University, M.A. in English
literature from Marquette Uni-

Originally from Burlington

Her extensive teaching and
higher education experience in-

faculty, professional staff and ad-

& Learning Association, PA/NJ
Chapter and holds the distinction
of being one of the few CRLA re-

Tutor Training Program Certifi-
cation. She is also a member of
the National Association for De-
velopmental Education and re-
cently received an Outstanding
Professional Service Award

ities, social sciences, and busi-
ness and related studies, will be a
part of her new role at BCC.
Im committed to BCC, as well
as the core values and mission of
community colleges, Bennett-
Bealer said.
Im looking forward to work-
ing with students, providing aca-
demic support, and collaborating
with the faculty to further
strengthen our programs and rep-
utation for excellence. Its not
only what they teach that is im-
portant, its how they reach stu-
dents with what they are teaching
that matters.
Bennett-Bealer currently re-
sides in Evesham Township with
her family.

same year, superintendent of
schools John Scavelli said.
The district is expected to
spend the estimated $2.1 million
over a five-year period, only pur-
chasing buses as each one is re-
tired, according to Scavelli.
This way, the district can
monitor enrollment and deter-
mine over time if all 21 buses will
need replacement, he said.
Procuring new buses may af-
fect bus drivers in the district.
The board of education has yet
to make a decision on keeping
currently employed bus drivers,
an unnerving idea for parents, ex-
plicitly expressed during a De-
cember board of education meet-
ing.
During the meeting, parent
Melissa Harrison recounted in-
stances of bus drivers going in
circles and often getting lost. Ad-
ditionally, multiple children were
allowed off at the wrong stop.
Other drivers arrived up to 25
minutes late.
Currently, 30 percent of Eve-
sham bus drivers are outsourced
under Hillman Bus Company,
headquartered in West Berlin.
Those routes, at a minimum,
will likely remain contracted,
Scavelli said.
On Friday, Feb. 15, bids for Stu-
dent Transportation Services for
the 2013-14 school year were re-
ported to the district.
It is too soon to determine
[what bids] look best, Scavelli
said. The administration is
working through this process and
will present to the board of edu-
cation and public the results of
the bid at the Feb. 28 board meet-
ing.
The next step after the vote will
be to decide if the board should
move forward with the bids pre-
sented.
The next board of education
meeting will be held on Feb. 28 at
7 p.m. at Marlton Elementary
School, located at 190 Tomlinson
Mill Road.

summer of 2013.
This years golf outing, again
at Ramblewood is scheduled for
Aug. 9, and wants to exceed its
field of 120, for a great dinner, golf
and charity auction.
The Marlton outing has been
the product of a local Special
Olympics hero, Tim Ori. Ori, a
Marlton Elk, has also been a Spe-
cial Olympics supporter for many
years, participating as a coach
and friend to families and partici-
pants.
But recently, Tim has gone fur-
ther, creating a new SO organiza-
tion by establishing a new non-
profit organization, Tackling
Lifes Challenges.
The local training program
called the Hurricanes provides
several Special Olympics pro-
grams throughout the year: bowl-
ing, basketball, softball, soccer
and flag football.
TLC supports over 30 Special
Olympics athletes in Burlington
County, providing equipment,
and uniforms, and by covering
100 percent of the cost for each
participating family.
This year, thanks to the Marl-
ton Elks and the golf outing,
$2,000 was donated to help TLC of
SJ continue to grow and support
Special Olympics athletes in
Burlington County.
