The anticipation is growing spring is just around the corner!

For most of us, cabin fever is in full effect, and we are more than ready to cure this winter boredom by getting outside and interacting with nature. Ah, the joy of whats to come! For now, though, we can make use of our expanding daylight hours and growing supply of energy by decluttering our surroundings. Sure, it sounds like just another chore, but there are actually health benefits to this activity. Experts say disarray can cause stress, while clean can facilitate calm and peace of mind in our lives. Check out some reputable health and wellness websites for more information on the therapeutic effects of decluttering! March is the month we observe National Nutrition Month. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. There is so much to learn in this area; consider researching these topics before things get too busy outside! Youll find some helpful tips and resources on the academys website (www.eatright.org). We have so many great articles to share with you this month. Tony Bednarowski helps you in the development of your sound eating habits by offering a simple way to calculate your calorie needs. Jeremy Gilsoul reminds us to stop and take a moment to ask ourselves the important questions in life and to understand that now is the moment to take control. Stanlee Maliszewski has an important message for stressed parents: what your children really want and need is your loving presence. And, theres much more, so please read on!

Enjoy the anticipation of spring, and take some time to prepare for your healthy future! In health and happiness,

beautiful springtime ......................................................

By kyle smith, Dipl om
omen have played a crucial role in shaping history the world over. In fact, an enchanting Chinese legend involves a young woman who unwillingly became a notorious bandits object of affection. Fearing that if she did not marry the outlaw he would then kill her family and harm the village, the woman accepted help offered by a temple nun. The nun trained her fully in a powerful fighting style, but the girl realized she needed to adapt it to her own stature and body mechanics. The only way to win her freedom was to defeat the bandit, and the day arrived when the two met. He charged and tried to overwhelm her, but the woman used quick, direct-line attacks and subtle body movements to defeat the marauder. Her name was Yim Wing Chun meaning beautiful springtime and the adapted martial art she created lives on to this day. In my practice, I am fortunate to care for many women who remind me of Yim Wing Chun; they are entering into a time of their lives where adaptations need to be made so they can also move freely into the next stage. And, if approached with understanding, acceptance and balance, this time can certainly be regarded as a beautiful springtime. According to Chinese medicine, menopause occurs when a womans body redirects the blood and energy from the kidneys away from the uterus and into her whole being to nourish the spirit and extend longevity. While this is seen as a natural and welcome shift from mother to wise being, the path is oftentimes accompanied by kidney yin deficiency. In the simplest terms, this happens because of excess heat that ultimately affects the kidneys or the water organ of the body. The increased temperature causes a loss of fluids that manifest in symptoms such as irregular menstruation, hair loss, vaginal dryness, dizziness, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, itchy skin, and soreness in the lower back and knees. Acupuncture has been used to help women with the symptoms of this transition since about 3 A.D. In addition to venting the heat, acupuncture alleviates many of the associated discomforts by also boosting hormone and endorphin levels. Recent studies continue to verify acupunctures effectiveness and have given way

to approvals from Western medicine physicians, as well as the United Nations World Health Organization. In reality, acupuncture is typically only one part of the healing equation; herbal remedies are often prescribed to relieve, restore and nourish patients. This type of natural treatment plan is preferred to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) because it does not pose the same increase for dire risks such as breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. Diet, too, is a key area of consideration. Patients are urged to avoid excess dairy, red meat, alcohol, sugar, spicy foods, caffeine and nicotine as they create heat in the body. Better choices include raw foods, fruits (particularly bananas, figs and dates), vegetables (such as soy beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beans and dark leafy vegetables), tofu and fish. A daily dose of flaxseed oil is also recommended to maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, increase tissue lubrication and protect against reproductive cancers. Spring is the time of rebirth and renewal. Working with a caring, qualified practitioner of Oriental medicine can help menopause become the same for many women. Regardless of the season, it is our experience, love and understanding that make life beautiful.

heal your body, one choice at a time ...........................................................................

By lindsay mercen, l.ac.
re you failing to feel your best? Did you have high hopes for a brighter, more vibrant you in 2013? Dont give up on those New Years resolutions! I encourage you to renew your commitment to yourself, one choice at a time. Most of us work hard and have busy lifestyles, so it is important to keep in mind that stress is a predominant cause of poor health. We need to take care of ourselves! With so much information to sift through and so little time, we often choose to trust others with our bodies and health. Many individuals turn to fitness centers and wellness spas for help losing weight and for some indulgence in rest and relaxation; however, there is a toxic dark side to the spa and cosmetic industry hidden in shampoos, creams and sprays. These toxins may be sabotaging your best efforts at the gym, too! This is the simple reason why most best laid plans for good health and weight management never get off the ground: your body is clogged up with toxins! Fat is a toxin storage dump. Your body cannot effectively clear fat, build muscle, purify skin, grow luxurious hair or feel energized until these toxins are purged. Thats why its so important to choose only the best quality ingredients to ingest and apply to your body!
www.naturespathways.com

what can you do to control the amount of toxins entering your body?
#1 ChOOSe heAlThy hAir PrOdUCTS!

Many hair sprays contain harmful substances like synthetic fragrances and formaldehyde. Most hair dyes contain PPDs (para-phenylenediamines), which are widely thought to be carcinogenic. Shampoos and conditioners can contain sulfates, parabens and, in some cases, glutens. These chemicals have been shown to cause serious health threats, including allergic, irritant and contact dermatitis, headaches and chronic fatigue. Find a hairstylist who uses organic hair color and products.

to years to remove progesterone stores from fat tissues. If progesterone is necessary, qualified natural health practitioners recommend a natural sublingual called Progon B. Try organic cosmetics infused with herbs and therapeutic-grade essential oils. Another healthy option is to seek out an acupuncturist who specializes in facial rejuvenation and female hormonal health.
#3 ChOOSe A heAlThy dieT!

Did you know that most anti-aging creams contain progesterone, which does NOT need to be listed on the labels? On the surface, progesterone sounds good. Progesterone is a natural hormone that plumps the skin and helps reverse signs of aging. However, in excess, progesterone converts downstream in our bodies hormonal cascade to excessive estrogen. Estrogen dominance is a phenomenon that is having devastating effects on our female population. It can take months

Many health enthusiasts mistakenly believe whole-grain cereal, toast and freshsqueezed orange juice is a healthy breakfast. In reality, it is composed of gluten and sugar, leading to inflammation and fat storing. Seek out a practitioner well versed in whole food nutrition, purification and long-term dietary modification. Nutritional coaches can help you make good choices at every meal.
#4 ChOOSe A heAlThy eNvirONMeNT!

This is the hardest. The air we breathe can be contaminated with a number of things, including chemicals from our cleaning products. All impurities need to be detoxed from our bodies. Choose natural cleaning products like vinegar and water on your hardwood floors, or essential oil-based household cleaners.

7 powerful seeds to fuel your mind and body .....................................................................

By Dr. Jake shuppe

ont let their small size fool you, seeds are fully loaded with nutritional power! Think about it: every tiny seed has all the nutrition necessary to sprout and bring life to the plant world. That really is pretty amazing! What is even more surprising is that apart from an occasional snack, most people dont implement these power-packed foods as a staple of their diet. Some of these beauties Im referring to are white and black sesame, chia, hemp, pumpkin, sunflower and flax. They are an excellent source of healthy minerals like

niacin, folic acid, selenium, iron and zinc. They play an integral role in everything from creating healthy skin, hair and nails, to balancing hormones, reducing cholesterol and preventing cancer. The list goes on and on. Seeds are also a great source of nonanimal protein. In fact, one ounce of hemp seeds provides a whopping 10.3 grams of protein. This provides many of the amino

acids necessary for the growth and development of tissues like your muscles and organs. Lets also not forget about the rich source of fiber that these seeds provide. Dietary fiber is known for keeping us regular and, therefore, reducing colorectal cancer, but it also regulates blood sugar and lowers cholesterol levels. BAM! I bet you didnt know that! Ok, so my guess is that you are starting to get the point. These little seeds are amazing! But Im not quite done yet. Another great characteristic about these seeds is the amazing healthy fat content. These specific seeds are loaded with omega-3 essential fatty acids. This plantbased omega-3 fat is called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA has been shown to be critical for heart health, reducing inflammation and most importantly in my opinion, brain development! Now please dont be like most people and get all scared about the fat content in seeds. Let me tell you something You need healthy fats in your diet and quite a significant amount of them. Healthy fats build cell membranes, build hormones and make up 70% of your brain tissue. Thats right, the most vital part of your body is
www.naturespathways.com

made up almost entirely of fat. I know this is hard to swallow and is contrary to popular belief, but do your brain a favor and give it some healthy fats. Just make sure they are the right kinds, meaning not damaged fats. I have been talking up these seeds to the point that they almost seem magical. And by Gods design they most certainly live up to the hype. On top of that, I want you to know one more important piece of information that will further enhance your seed experience. In order to make all the nutrients in these seeds even more digestible and bio-available, they can go through a process called enzyme-activation. It is similar to sprouting in that it de-activates inhibitory enzymes that can upset the stomach. It also unlocks all the nutritional power that these amazing seeds have to offer. Add a beautiful blend of these seven seeds into your diet on a regular basis and experience some extraordinary health benefits!

Heal your body, one cHoice at a time continued from page 9

how do you combat all the toxins out of your control?

Purification! Your gut and your liver are your major detoxification organs. You need to provide them with the nutritional tools to cleanse your body. Cruciferous vegetables provide nutrients that promote methylation in the detoxification pathways of your liver. This is part of a process that aids in the clearance of toxins from the body to then facilitate clearance of fat. Combining proteins and healthy fats properly will balance blood sugar and further aid the breakdown and release of fat from storage. The good news is: you dont have to count calories; you just have to eat lots of vegetables! Try combining them with a healthy fat such as coconut oil or avocado. And, be sure to avoid sugar and starch. Your body will do the rest. One way to assist your body in this purification is massage therapy. Toxins act as glue-like substances in your body, essentially gluing your muscle fibers, tissues, ligaments and tendons together. This reduces range of motion, impedes nerve function and causes overall tension and soreness. Massage therapy can help break up these glue-like toxins, freeing your muscles to function normally.

Massage therapy and acupuncture also increase circulation, helping to flush toxins out of your system. These modalities can help prevent headaches and digestive discomfort during the purification process. Not all purification and detox programs are created equal. A short threeday cleanse is not the answer; long-term lifestyle choices are the key to successful long-term healing. Learn to read labels and enlist the assistance of qualified health care professionals who can help you put the whole picture together! Hairstylists, aestheticians, massage therapists, acupuncturists and nutritional consultants are becoming more aware of the need to help their clients with good choices for a healthy lifestyle. Ask them about the ingredients in the products they use and promote. Be sure to choose service providers that recognize the importance of these choices and the effects they have on your body.

dont use luck to choose supplements

Learn which vitamins are bad for your pet! ...............................................................
By Dr. Jodie

asically, there are two types of vitamins: the whole food type, which are found in the fresh foods we eat, and the synthetic type, which are manufactured in a laboratory and found in the processed foods we eat. When you purchase synthetic vitamins, you are relying on luck as to whether or not they are the right ones, in the correct combination, that may or not be useful or even harmful to your pets body. When you provide fresh food or whole food source vitamins, you are relying on nature and the bodys innate knowledge to select from the presented array, the needed vitamins and combination to be properly assimilated and effectively utilized by the body. In basic biology we learned that vitamins need their cofactors and appropriate food combinations to be utilized by the body. Yet, even natural health sources tout d-alpha tocopherol as natural vitamin E. In reality, it is not utilized without selenium. Your best whole food source of vitamin E is wheat germ oil. Doctors often say, take your vitamin C to prevent the common cold. Unfortunately, ascorbic acid is NOT vitamin C. It is only one chemical constituent within this complex nutrient. A great whole food

source is rose hips. Have you ever wondered why one study says a particular vitamin is good for you and another study says it is not? Sometimes it is because a study is based upon utilization of a food that contains large amounts of the particular vitamin vs. another study where only a chemical constituent of the vitamin is used. Ever hear the old adage, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts? Indeed, nature has even put into its plants constituents, which protect against or balance the negative effects of another constituent, within the same plant! This protection is not present if one consumes a partial vitamin or synthetic version. There are many nutrients in a carrot that work synergistically. There are many components that affect the functionality of a carrots vitamin A, not just beta-carotene. Why is the ingestion of synthetics so bad? And why does an individual often see results when consuming synthetic vitamins? Cells have vitamin receptor sites. A body with a vitamin deficiency will have cells with empty receptor sites. Initially, the synthetic vitamins will adhere to the receptor sites and stimulate a beneficial response. The excessive and repeated presence of the synthetic vitamin will cause the tired receptor sites to down regulate, making them no longer responsive to the synthetic or the presence of the natural vitamin when it arrives. So, after some time, an individuals symptoms of vitamin deficiency recur. This is why health practitioners often say excessive amounts of a vitamin can become toxic. Cells do not do a good job of recognizing and releasing synthetic vitamins. Signs of deficiency and those of excess are often quite similar. This is why synthetic vitamin supplementation can be very confusing and dangerous.
reAd lAbelS!

Read the ingredient label on your pets bag of dry kibble (the synthetic vitamins are bolded): brewers rice, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, animal fat (preserved with mixed

tocopherols), dried egg product, vegetable oil, chicken liver digest, fish meal, DL-methionine, L-lysine, taurine, L-tryptophan, preserved with mixed tocopherols, citric acid and rosemary extract, beta carotene, minerals (potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, salt, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), vitamins (choline chloride, vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, ascorbic acid (a source of vitamin C), niacin, thiamine, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement). Now read the ingredients on a bag of fresh, raw food: rabbit, pork fat, ground rabbit bone, pork liver, pork heart, apples, carrots, butternut squash, ground flax seeds, montmorillonite clay, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, dried kelp, apple cider vinegar, parsley, honey, salmon oil, olive oil, blueberries, alfalfa sprouts, persimmons, inulin, rosemary, sage, clove. Pet parents who cannot feed fresh food, should never supplement synthetic vitamins with foods which already contain synthetic vitamins. It is imperative to only supplement with whole food vitamins. Dont be misled to believe that these processed foods contain adequate amounts of vitamins. Synthetic vitamins

are poorly absorbed. It is safe and a good idea to add blended fresh veggies to your pets food. Organic is always best. (Avoid grapes, raisins and onions.) Your pet may benefit from specific combinations of whole food supplementation depending on if he has a particular imbalance. For example, eating liver, milk thistle and beets are excellent if your pet has liver disease. Standard Process is an international company based in Palmyra, Wisconsin, that makes human and pet whole food supplements. They have made supplementation easy for humans. Chiropractors and acupuncturists have been recommending these products for people for years. Veterinarians have this same option available to them for pets. The Standard Process Canine Renal Support contains ingredients such as bovine kidney, kidney bean extract, pea vine juice, beet root, alfalfa juice and more. Mmm good, easy and real!

Asking the important questions? ....................................................

By Jeremy Gilsoul
ave you ever just stopped for a moment to catch your breath? Have you ever just stopped and asked yourself, Am I the person I wanted to be? or, Am I as happy as I wanted to be at this point in my life? These are some powerful questions to ponder, especially with the risk of the answer being, No. But if thats your answer, it is okay. You see, life is not a relay, its a marathon. Its a journey of right and wrong paths, of really amazing times and not so great ones, too.

In 2006, long before I had a son of my own, I conducted a writing assignment. The assignment was to write in ten minutes my last words of advice to my child, whom I would never see again. (Every single parent who read that just gasped!) The thought, the idea of never seeing your child again, chills the spine. Well, I didnt have a child at the time, and I wrote my paragraph as instructed and went on with my life. I had completely forgotten the assignment, and as the years passed I eventually became a father of an amazing little boy. One day while going through some old writing books, I came across that assignment and was floored when I read not only the question, but my response. To this day I couldnt have written a better last words to my boy. To this day, this letter stands as my personal mission statement; the ideals that I want to leave with everyone I ever meet. You may be asking yourself, What does this have to do with the important questions? My answer: Everything! The first month of 2013 has passed us by in a flash, and its important to stop and take a moment to ask yourself the important questions. For me, when I stop and take that moment, I ask myself if I am living up to my personal mission statement. I ask myself if I only had one last moment, would those who knew me, know that Id given my best? This writing contains my Letter to Aidan as its become known. Please know that each of us has the power to change lives, especially our own. So if you are hurting,

suffering, feeling alone or tired, know that now is the most important moment for you to take control, to take charge of your life and go out to get some support, some help, some comfort. There are many amazing medicines, practitioners and therapies just waiting for you! Now is your time! Letter to Aidan My child, today you read my words of advice. Dream, dont ever stop! Set for yourself a plan and go with it, the path changes and so must you. Smile and laugh everyday. Fix yourself before you work to fix others. Become wise and love give yourself and your heart to another. Enjoy the wonders of this planet. Become someone who helps heal and always view things from as many angles as possible. Dont fear failure, embrace and learn from your mistakes, and remember that you are a joy, a piece of my puzzle of life and that I love you dearly ... and with that I am always with you, just close your eyes and Im there. I love you always, Dad!

When we are truly present we can often sense our childrens moods and needs by looking at them and reading their cues. Often, the hustle and bustle of our lives has us so frazzled that we are just moving through our checklist of tasks without any mindfulness, which can often include our interactions with our children.

When we add mindfulness (presence) to each task, especially the task of caring for the little or big people in our lives, it changes the feel of the action entirely. When we are truly focused, a task often becomes more enjoyable and easier to complete. Our children see this and will

arenting is rewarding, amazing and (the part that few mention) difficult. Parents today juggle work, housekeeping, a myriad of scheduled activities and to-do lists as long as their arms. Amidst all of this, parents are trying to spend time with their children. We often do all of this in order to give our children better, to enrich their lives, to offer them all that the world has to offer. The funny thing is, what children really want and need most is their parents loving presence. What about cleaning the house you say? What about the dishes, the plants, the ? The funny thing is, your list will still be there long after your children have grown up. Children want us to see them, to look in their eyes and see how their day was, to know what they are feeling and what they need from us, all without saying a word.

The dance we do ...................................................

By Dr. Julie e. Vance

hen you dance with someone, youll notice that when you step forward, they step back and as you step back, they step forward. Together you create a smooth pattern of movement that turns into a dance. In the same way, our muscles work together to create the dance we call movement. Whether its walking, running or any sport we do, in order to create movement, one muscle has to shorten while the opposite muscle lengthens. Sometimes muscles have to hold steady to stabilize you as other muscles do the work of shortening or lengthening while creating a particular motion in a dance of incredible complexity. What happens to that complex dance if a muscle is too tight or spasms? If a muscle shortens too much and cant lengthen like it should or doesnt stabilize you, then you can no longer move in a healthy pattern, and you have pain and poor posture. Since your muscles move your joints, your joints also suffer and start to degenerate. That degeneration leads to further pain, less movement, more muscle spasm, more pain, less movement, more spasm you get the idea. Your body no longer dances like it did when it was younger.

So how do you make your body dance again? When a joint cant move its full range, it cant nourish itself and breakdown of the joint begins. That joint needs to start moving again. The muscles need to start working correctly, and your body needs to unlock. Chiropractic adjustments can unlock and open locked joints in the spine as well as the rest of the body. Adjustments help to restore the lost motion in joints and relieve pain, as well as help movement be more effective. Massage therapy can break up muscle spasms, adhesions and soft tissue injuries. In addition to chiropractic adjustments and massage, orthopedic acupuncture can be used as a way to balance the body, decrease pain and stimulate healing. Pain is very often a multifunctional problem that deserves a multidisciplinary approach to helping you heal. In our office, we find it most effective to use the three-cornered approach of chiropractic, orthopedic acupuncture and massage therapy to help you live happier, healthier and more pain-free.

begin to find the same pattern in their lives. Besides, it can be FUN to really pay attention to your children when they are not asking for anything or needing your discipline attention. This presence that we bring to our relationship with our children will also begin to flow into each task we do. Our children, who are learning by watching us, will learn to have this same presence in their lives, and in this, you have given them a true gift! Of course, you will still have your to-do lists and your tasks to accomplish; no one would suggest that we spend every moment attending only to our children! What a mess that would be. Only that we take time, each day, to spend time with each other that is just that; no hidden agenda, no interruptions, nothing but time devoted to each other. It can be as little as five minutes in your day. You may think to yourself, Well of course I do that. I challenge you to really think on when your last fully present five minutes was spent with your children? I have surprised myself on occasion when I do this; sometimes my answer is that I cannot answer, because I dont remember! No need to panic or coat yourself in parent guilt, just take a few minutes today and really be with your child. Enjoy and savor it, for it is truly a gift!

fighting illness with exercise ......................................................................

By Brian Bankenbusch, cscs, ces, Pes

ith all the flu viruses and colds going around this winter, people are wondering what they should be doing to fortify themselves against illness. One simple way to keep yourself healthy and your immune system strong is to exercise regularly.

Consistent exercise does great things for the body:

the body.

It keeps the heart strong to help it pump more blood through It fortifies the lungs so they move oxygen through the body It keeps the muscles strong. It boosts the immune system, resulting in fewer colds and

effectively.

illnesses throughout the year.

A big reason why exercise boosts the immune system is because it fortifies the cells that fight bacteria in the body. These cells seem to work slower in people who do not exercise regularly. So consistent exercise makes the body better equipped to fight off colds and other viruses, which will either keep a person from getting sick or shorten the length of illness, as compared to the body of someone who does not exercise regularly. Studies have shown that people who exercise take half as many sick days as those who do

not exercise. It is also documented that no matter your age, regular exercise will help to increase the chances of obtaining a healthy immune system. Anyone, of any age, can boost their immune system through regular exercise. A person does not need to be training like an Olympic athlete to boost their immune system. Doing moderate exercise three or more times a week can improve the bodys illness fighting function. In fact, too much exercise can have a negative effect on the immune system, making it weaker. During moderate exercise, immune cells move through the body more quickly; however, during prolonged high-intensity exercise bouts, certain hormones are released that suppress the immune cells from circulating through the body. This weakens the immune system and makes a person more susceptible to colds and viruses. The key is to find a happy medium with how much exercise a body needs. Consistent moderate-intensity exercise with a couple of rest days during the week seems to be the best immune-boosting exercise regime. Many people question whether they should continue with their exercise routine when they are sick. It is never a good idea to workout when a person has a fever or is contagious. Other illnesses like the stomach flu or severe chest colds also warrant staying away from the gym. Each person should take inventory of how their body is feeling and what their energy levels are. If it is towards the beginning or middle of an illness, it is also best to rest and let the body heal itself. Towards the end of a cold or other minor illness, it could be beneficial to do some light exercise. When working out at the end of an illness, it is wise to keep the intensity light until a person feels up to a more strenuous workout. The bottom line is clear: regular exercise is very beneficial to keeping the body and all of its functions healthy and strong. So if your family, friends and coworkers are sneezing and coughing around you, hit the gym and strengthen your muscles, lungs and immune system!

The importance of postural alignment ......................................................................

By rob reader

eceiving regular massage therapy can help correct your posture. Many of us have jobs that demand we stay in the same position or perform the same repetitive motion for hours on end. Lets take for example sitting in a cubicle for 8 to 10 hours a day staring at the computer or talking on the phone. We are so focused on our work that we do not even realize that we slouch. Our shoulders are rolled forward and raised to our ears with the phone sandwiched in the space between. We lean in closer to the computer screen, head forward and neck strained. How about the employee in the stock room whos on their feet all day, bending and lifting? It doesnt matter what your profession is, over time the repetition of our day-to-day activities puts stress on our bodies and eventually compromises our posture. If our posture is never reset back to normal or proper posture, these muscle imbalances can lead to chronic pain if not treated. While there are many factors that cause your posture to be off, tight muscles are very common and respond well to massage therapy. Slouching weakens the back muscles by overstretching and exhausting them while allowing the opposite muscles in front of the body to become compressed and tighten. Usually these are the core, diaphragm and chest muscles. Talking on the phone and tilting your head to hold the receiver overstretches the neck muscles on one side while allowing the muscles to tighten on the other side. It also elevates the shoulder causing our body to become uneven. Improper bending and lifting can weaken the lower back region, buttocks and back of the thighs. Again the opposite effect on the front side is a tightening of the core and the front leg muscles. This can all cause chronic upper and lower back pain. Generally when you experience constant upper back pain, its because the muscles in your upper back are losing the tug of war with the muscles in the front. When you see a massage therapist, the goal should be to loosen up the muscles in the front of your body to allow the muscles in the back a chance to relax. Once the muscles in the front are looser and stretched, then the muscles in the back can be worked on to aid in getting blood flow to the muscles and work out any stubborn knots. A great deal of relief can be achieved in just a one-hour massage. It can make you feel taller and make it easier to breathe properly.

Massage is an excellent choice for relief of pain caused by bad posture or repetitive stresses at work.
This works for the lower back as well. If you experience low back pain after standing for a while, it could be caused by the muscles in the front of your legs being too tight and pulling your pelvis forward. When your pelvis is tilted too far forward, it puts extra strain and curve into your lower back and causes the hamstrings to feel tight. Working the quads (the four muscles in your front thigh) and getting them to loosen up or release, can also alleviate a great deal of low back pain. It is a common remedy for knee pain too. When you stand up again, the legs may feel lighter and the back a bit more straight. This may make you taller. Massage is an excellent choice for relief of pain caused by bad posture or repetitive stresses at work. With regular treatments, it can reduce or eliminate pain and improve your overall posture. You do not want to continue slouching. We have all seen those older individuals who are so stooped over that they cant look up any more. You most certainly do not want that to happen to you.

Sarah DuSSeau

By Jackie PeTerS
any of us fantasize about our dream jobs, but few have the opportunity to do what we really love. sarah dusseau of milwaukee is one of the few. and her decision to follow her passions has not only been amazing for her, but also for her community. Her unique business idea: food and fitness in one location. she wanted to make it easier for people who take the time out of their busy schedules for exercise to also get the healthy food their bodies need. I have always loved to cook and also help people, so it was natural to start a food business with a fitness component and help people get their lives back, she explains. so, in 2010, Fit Food trainer was born. the menomonee Falls business offers fresh, nutritious, individually packaged, gourmet-quality to-go meals with intense personal training sessions and extensive group fitness workouts to boost its clients metabolism, help them lose weight and send their energy levels soaring. as dusseau puts it, Well tailor-make your exercise program to suit your schedule and lifestyle, and when you are done with your workout, well send you home with healthy meals and snacks to keep you on track. Its a unique concept and a gentle way to nudge clients into permanent lifestyle change. this whole concept really has been a successful and sustainable solution for clients. according to Jennifer K. of milwaukee, I am excited about the lifestyle changes Ive made. Choosing Fit Food trainer has been the best health decision I have ever made and I cant wait to see what the future holds for me.

The fitness component

at Fit Food trainer, clients choose the fitness program that works best for them and that fits their schedule and lifestyle, be it one-on-one personal training, partner training or small group training. Its trainers then custom design programs that take their goals, needs and exercise style into account. dusseaus approach is to make people stronger from the inside, out. thats why the focus is on core-based training. By strengthening core muscles, clients are able to stabilize their bodies and function more effectively, thereby reducing risk for many health problems. We have a very unintimidating, supportive environment here at the studio and our clients really appreciate that, says dusseau. Clients also have the option to attend basic and premium group classes, including pilates, abs, G3, trX, tabata & Circuit X-treme. For more information and scheduling, visit www.fitfoodtrainer.com.

The food component

Lets face it, eating healthy can be challenging for many all-too-stressed americans. Consider whats become known as the standard american diet (sad, yes, it is sad): high in unhealthy animal, saturated and hydrogenated fats, low in fiber, high in processed foods, and low in complex carbs and plant-based foods. as the famous dr. William sears describes it, If you were to list the factors that increase the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, intestinal disorders just about any illness the standard american diet has them all. particularly troubling today is the extensive use of preservatives in the food industry. LIVestrOnG. com lists their potential harmful effects to be: breathing difficulties, behavioral changes, heart damage and cancer. additives have been linked to illness, disease and allergies as well. daily ramifications of unhealthy food choices are that they can sap your energy, make you feel bloated, promote cravings, leave your body sluggish and depleted, and even leave you feeling guilty. these are among the many reasons dusseau brought her clean eating philosophy to Fit Food trainer. It has always been important to her that her clients get the most basic nutritional fundamentals. all of her offerings are healing foods: no processed foods, preservatives, msG or trans fat. she steers her clients away from the toxins and poisons that can be found in processed foods. Her intent is to keep all of her food as close to original form as possible. dusseau herself is the mastermind in the kitchen at Fit Food trainer, developing and creating all of the menus and meals. Ive been around food my entire life, especially while working in restaurants, so its natural for me, she says. Her self-taught culinary skills are exceptional, considering the delicious food she prepares is fat-, protein- and carbcontrolled and purely healthy. Clients appreciate that dusseaus reaL food offerings make it possible for them to indulge in all of their favorite things with none of the typical guilt.

dusseaus recipes call for a wide array of organic ingredients, including chicken, eggs, quinoa, corn, oats, arugula, greens, mushrooms, dips, hummus and pepperoni. she has exceptional local sources for free-range pork and beef. Other staples in her meal planning: fresh fruits and vegetables, whole-wheat pastas, sprouted-grain breads and fresh seafood. and, the order and pick-up process is easy! Orders can be placed in-person, by phone or email, and on the website. those placed before 8 a.m. monday mornings are available for pick-up after 3:30 p.m. that day at the Fit Food trainer facility. pick-ups at the three new outlets are available after 12 p.m. on tuesdays. response has been so good, in fact, that they are moving to a 3-day production schedule soon.

What Fit Food Trainer clients have to say:

[the meals] are outstanding and filling, and we look forward to what the next taste experience will bring us. We are never bored with her meals or snacks. the price is very reasonable and the benefits to your health are priceless. Moving to a new home

he phone rings. I lift the phone from its cradle and the vibration of fear surges up my arm into my body Hello, this is Jesse. How may I help you? A meek voice asks, Are you for real? I need to know. I need help. I feel like I am going crazy. She continues, I am fine most of the day until I walk through the door of my new home. My aunt tells me my new home is haunted, but she isnt a psychic. Are you really a psychic? I respond, Yes, I am. She asks again, Can you help me? And I say, Yes, I can. We set up an appointment for an initial consultation. Three days later, we meet. I learn she comes from a tight-knit family; three sisters, two brothers, mom, dad and a grandmother. She was born in the house she was raised in, as were her brothers and sisters and her father as well. The house has been in the family for three generations. It has been the only place she has ever called home in her 24 years. Her new house is a 120-year-old Victorian in Oshkosh. When she first set eyes on it, she instantly fell in love with it, as it reminded her of the only home she has ever known. It was selling at a bargain, so she bought it. She is married to an Army helicopter pilot who spends many months away at a time. For the first time in her life

she finds herself alone. I also learned that it wasnt just her aunt that told her the house was haunted she has had three other psychics agree. One local ghost-busting group claimed it was a poltergeist living in the house and didnt want her living there. As she explains, the level of fear continually increases throughout the interview. I tell her I will need to inspect the property before I determine what can be done. I set up a time for the inspection of the property at a time corresponding to the full moon, as it is easier to pick up spirit energy during that time. I also suggest she go stay at her parents house in Milwaukee for her peace of mind. She agrees. After she left the office, every cell of my body was vibrating with fear. WOW! It was bad. My stomach was turning. How can that be? I am not afraid of ghosts. And as for demons, I have encountered them one or two times a year over the last 32 years and I can assure you, I do not back down. I hold my ground no matter how creepy it may be. I let myself become contaminated with her fear in order to understand what she is going through. Check back next month for the inspection.

deadly lilies .......................................

By kathryn christensen, DVm

ith Easter on the way and summer to soon follow, many of us will be buying potted lilies for our homes or planting them in our gardens. While they look beautiful, several types can be deadly to cats. Easter lilies (Lilium longiforum) and other species of the genus Lilium (tiger lily, rubum lily, Japanese show lily, Asiatic hybrid lily) are among the most deadly of the Liliacae family, causing acute kidney failure in cats. Some species of daylily (Hemerocallis spp) are also believed to be toxic. All parts of the lily plant are toxic, and consuming even small amounts can cause severe poisoning resulting in death. It takes only a few hours after ingestion of the plant for the cat to begin to show signs of kidney failure, including vomiting, lethargy and lack of appetite. As the kidney damage progresses, the signs worsen. Without prompt treatment by your veterinarian, your cat will develop kidney failure within 72 hours. Cats that are treated within 12 hours of ingestion with intravenous fluids and rapid decontamination (inducing vomiting and activated charcoal) usually do survive. Cats are extremely inquisitive and may graze on plants in and around a house. Therefore, we encourage cat owners to avoid placing lilies where cats reside and to substitute Easter lilies with other nontoxic plants such as Easter orchids, Easter cactus, Easter daisy or violets. If you suspect that your cat has ingested a toxic plant, contact your veterinarian or the animal poison control center immediately. health and wellness q&A ..................................................................

By karmen nenahlo

Question: I keep hearing good things about the Paleo diet. Is this really a sound nutritional plan? answer: Theres no doubt that the Paleo diet is getting a lot of traction in the media these days. Fans of this diet claim that we should eat more of what our Stone Age hunter-gatherer ancestors ate, and that we should avoid grains, dairy and legumes because we simply havent evolved to consume them. They also argue that the typical Western diet is largely responsible for many of the ills of today, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes, amongst others. This is certainly hard to dispute! The Paleo plan is made up of meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, tree nuts, roots, fruits, vegetables and berries. Sounds pretty healthy on the surface, but the restrictions mentioned earlier seem a bit impractical. There is an overwhelming body of research touting the healthful aspects of whole grains, low-fat dairy and legumes. Many Paleo diet fans are quick to point out that its the healthiest diet out there; however, I would argue that we simply dont know how it stacks up against a traditional Asian diet, a Mediterranean diet or any of the various vegetarian plans. And lets not forget the fact that following a true Paleo diet is almost impossible in our current environment. Wild game is not widely available and most plant foods are not grown in the wild either. Even those of us wanting to avoid as many processed foods as possible can find it to be quite a challenge. In the end, the goal of consuming more of your food directly from nature is great, and it certainly beats the traditional Western diet. However, some of the claims about Paleo are a bit far-fetched with little science to back them up, and you may find it to be needlessly restrictive. Give it a shot though, and see what you think! Question: Im an avid runner and Ive had sore knees recently. I was told that running on a treadmill or on grass might help with the pain. Is this true? answer: This is the prevailing theory, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Many people think that running on a slightly softer surface will help with knee pain, and that seems to make sense.
26
Natures Pathways | march 2013

But its the force of your overall body mass on your joints that is causing the problem, so running on a treadmill vs. pavement really doesnt matter. Your best bet would be to change up your modes of exercise and incorporate a little more biking, elliptical or rowing into your training. This will give your knees some muchneeded rest, and then hopefully you can continue to run with little to no pain. Remember, if the pain gets too severe, you may want to take some time off and/or go see a sports physician to see if the pain is stemming from a more serious injury. Question: Ive been having a tough time with my energy levels for my 6 a.m. workouts. I was thinking coffee might help with this, but it seems like its always getting mixed reviews. Any cause for concern before a workout? answer: First things first. If youre experiencing low energy levels, and youre not necessarily focused on fat loss, try having a small breakfast, or even a bar or a shake, before you go workout. This will definitely provide the much-needed energy youre looking for. However, if youre trying to drop body fat and youd like to avoid calories that early in the morning, coffee is an excellent alternative. The caffeine in coffee is considered a central nervous system stimulant and will provide a boost of energy, though the effect varies greatly among individuals. Caffeine is actually considered an ergogenic aid, meaning it enhances physical performance. In the right amounts, caffeine has been shown to reduce the perception of effort during a workout, which means your workout will seem easier than it actually is. Not bad for a little cup o joe, huh? Keep in mind, coffee does increase heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure, and it can make you a bit jittery if youre a newbie. Luckily, these effects are relatively mild, especially for healthy folks. In fact, much of the research these days is focused on the potential health benefits of coffee, rather than any health risks.

you are your pets advocate! ...............................................

By kathleen Folz & Jordan stamper

ave you asked your friends, family, veterinarian, groomer or trainer for advice on your pets issues and received as many different opinions? There are so many decisions and choices to make for nutrition, health and behavior. Our animal companions depend on us to sift through new and seemingly endless information and advice to keep them healthy and happy. How do we decide which information is helpful? Asking questions and doing a bit of homework can prepare us to be the advocate we need to be for our pets. Good nutrition is the basis for good health and good behavior. Its easy to feed the food your dog or cat came with from the shelter or breeder, but your pets long-term health depends on you knowing what youre feeding and why. Your holistic veterinarian, specialty pet supply store and some websites should be able to guide you in learning how to read and interpret the ingredients and quality of foods. They should be able to explain the types of foods available and guide you as you make your choices. If a label does not give you the information you are looking for, contact the manufacturer. Their ability to give you detailed information may be vital if you are choosing foods to support the health of your ill pet. Many pet parents look to pet professionals to help identify the needs of their animal companions. It is important to choose pet professionals who communicate well and work in a friendly and positive manner with your pet. Does your groomer let you know when your dog or cat has a skin issue that needs monitoring or veterinary attention? Does your trainer give you helpful feedback from their observations? Does your pet sitter or doggy daycare staff give you a report that may help you know when there is a change in behavior? Ask the professionals you use to let you know any changes they observe. Noting physical and behavioral changes may help you to know when you need to reevaluate food and supplements or check in with your veterinarian. You and your veterinarian need to work together for the benefit of your pets long-term health. Dont be afraid to ask your veterinarian about the supplements, medications or food they suggest. Make sure you understand the purpose of each medication or supplement and any side effects you need to be aware of. You may already have a file of veterinary records for your companion animal. It is also a good idea to include labels from food and treats, and notes from your groomer or pet sitter. These along with occasional

observations you make about your cat or dogs favorite toys, activities and foods may be helpful if your pet should become ill. Our animal companions are an important part of our lives. We owe it to them to make informed decisions for their health and happiness. You are your pets advocate!

boom or bust?
Kids favorite beverages not always healthy .....................................................................

ealth-conscious parents often worry about what their kids are eating. Those greasy fast food French fries kids love might be cringe-worthy to parents, but its not just the foods kids request that parents should monitor. Adults and children alike have favorite beverages that may or may not be healthy. But which beverages are beneficial and which should be avoided? The answer to that isnt always absolute. The following breakdown can help health-conscious parents determine which drinks their kids can continue to enjoy as well as which ones they should limit or avoid altogether.

have of these drinks, the better off they are. Still, the drinks are not entirely devoid of nutritional value, so parents might want to decide if theyll allow kids to drink sweetened drinks in moderation or remove them from the refrigerator entirely.

Sodas

Sweetened drinks

Sweetened drinks can include some fruit punches and other fruit drinks that arent called juice. Labels on these beverages often claim Made with real fruit juice. While that might be true, theyre all too often made with a lot of sugar as well. Typically, these drinks do provide some nutritional value, including some vitamins and minerals. However, these drinks are often high in calories, and the amount of vitamins and minerals provided is minimal. The American Heart Association suggests the less adults and children

Sodas have taken quite a public relations hit in the 21st century, and thats likely because they provide no nutritional value. Whats more, many sodas provide more sugar than a childs body needs, which will lead to weight gain and possibly even cavities or tooth decay. Children typically love soda, so parents might find it difficult to stop kids soda consumption entirely. However, sodas status as a sugary, high-calorie drink makes it one beverage most parents will want their kids to avoid. If kids must drink soda, try diet soda instead. Though diet soda also provides no nutritional value, at the very least its a lower-calorie alternative.

Milk

The symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger, so kids who dont drink enough water could be mistaking mild dehydration for hunger. drinking more water might just help kids avoid eating an extra snack or two, indirectly helping them lose weight.

Milk is perhaps the most difficult beverage for parents to gauge. Many parents assume all milk is the same. However, whole milk and 2 percent milk contain extra fat the body does not need. All milk provides valuable nutrients like calcium and protein, contributing to strong bones and teeth while helping build strong muscles. But when choosing which milk to give kids, choose fat-free (formerly skim) or 1 percent milk, each of which provides the same amount of nutrients as whole or 2 percent without also providing unnecessary fat. Even chocolate milk can be a healthy beverage option for kids. Just be sure to apply the same principles mentioned above (namely, choose nonfat or low-fat chocolate milk) and keep in mind chocolate also comes with extra calories thanks to sugar. So monitor how much chocolate milk kids are drinking.

Kids might be indifferent to water, but water helps maintain a healthy body temperature and can even make skin look better. Waters also important in digestion, helping the body digest food. Kids should drink water every day. In addition, parents who are concerned about their childrens weight should encourage them to drink more water. Ginkgo
(Ginkgo biloba) ...................................
he ginkgo tree is one of the oldest types of trees in the world. Ginkgo seeds have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, and cooked seeds are occasionally eaten. Historically, ginkgo leaf extract has been used to treat a variety of ailments and conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, fatigue and tinnitus (ringing or roaring sounds in the ears). Today, folk uses of ginkgo leaf extracts include attempts to: improve memory; treat or help prevent Alzheimers disease and other types of dementia; decrease intermittent claudication (leg pain caused by narrowing arteries); and treat sexual dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, tinnitus and other health conditions. Extracts are usually taken from the ginkgo leaf and are used to make tablets, capsules or teas. Occasionally, ginkgo extracts are used in skin products.

insulin resistance and short-term memory loss associated with electroconvulsive therapy for depression.

Side effects and cautions

what the science says

Numerous studies of ginkgo have been done for a variety of conditions. Among the most widely researched are dementia, memory impairment, intermittent claudication and tinnitus. An NCCAM-funded study of the well-characterized ginkgo product EGb-761 found it ineffective in lowering the overall incidence of dementia and Alzheimers disease in the elderly. Further analysis of the same data also found ginkgo to be ineffective in slowing cognitive decline, lowering blood pressure or reducing the incidence of hypertension. In this clinical trial, known as the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory study, researchers recruited more than 3,000 volunteers age 75 and over who took 240 mg of ginkgo daily. Participants were followed for an average of approximately six years. Some smaller studies of ginkgo for memory enhancement have had promising results, but a trial sponsored by the National Institute on Aging of more than 200 healthy adults over age 60 found that ginkgo taken for six weeks did not improve memory. Overall, the evidence on ginkgo for symptoms of intermittent claudication has not yet shown a significant benefit for this condition, although several small studies have found modest improvements. There is conflicting evidence on the efficacy of ginkgo for tinnitus. Other NCCAM-funded research includes studies of ginkgo for symptoms of multiple sclerosis, intermittent claudication, cognitive decline, sexual dysfunction due to antidepressants,

Side effects of ginkgo may include headache, nausea, gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, dizziness or allergic skin reactions. More severe allergic reactions have occasionally been reported. There are some data to suggest that ginkgo can increase bleeding risk, so people who take anticoagulant drugs, have bleeding disorders, or have scheduled surgery or dental procedures should use caution and talk to a health care provider if using ginkgo. Fresh (raw) ginkgo seeds contain large amounts of a chemical called ginkgotoxin, which can cause serious adverse reactions even seizures and death. Roasted seeds can also be dangerous. Products made from standardized ginkgo leaf extracts contain little ginkgotoxin and appear to be safe when used orally and appropriately. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

5 reasons to replace your sit-ups with something else! .............................................................

By hope Zvara

it-ups dont work. Wrenching your body up and down at turbo speed is hardly considered a core workout. And considering most people have no clue what body parts they are using or should be using in core exercises, being excited that they just torched their core with 100+ sit-ups is hardly a check in the success column. When one engages in sit-ups on the floor, they are usually less than mindful (even in yoga I have seen this) about what they are actually doing in the exercise. Legs flailing, pelvises pushing, necks wrenching, and for some, every muscle working but their core. In sit-ups, you can expect your neck muscles to be pulled, hip flexors to be overworked and, worst of all, major lumbar damage due to the lack of stability encouraged in the realm of the core.

Pilates initial goal with his moves was to rehabilitate injured soldiers who couldnt walk, had lost limbs, etc.)? There are far superior ways to work the core, but regardless of what position you put yourself or students in, there must be good instruction and purposeful reason.
4. GrAviTy! What is our current relationship with gravity?

1. SiT-UPS dO dAMAGe. Yes, sit-ups create more harm than good.

Gravity is against us all day long, and if we can train our physical bodies to learn how to play against it to our advantage, especially in the area of our core (which surrounds our spine and organs), wouldnt that make much more sense? Work with gravity and incorporate core work, standing, sitting, side lying, prone and yes, even supine, but watch your ratio in which you train and equally incorporate your core in all planes of motion in all body positions.
5. where iS The fUNCTiONAliTy? I firmly believe that

before, if you want over-stimulated hip flexors (which can just make back pain worse), tight pectorals and neck muscles to help enhance your kyphosis from long time spans of sitting and an imbalanced core, and a flattened lumbar spine; then sign me up. As a teacher and as a student, it is important to look past the pretty or extremely difficult and see you are only fooling yourself. A good workout must start with an understanding of why you are doing what you are doing and possibly even a new mindset that what you were doing wasnt really working.

ally turns on in a typical flat floor sit-up. Remembering our core is a layered entity, and unless you lay on your back for a living, exercising and moreover trying to stimulate your core on the back, floor work is less than life skill enhancing. As a yoga teacher and ex-Pilates teacher, even in mind-body classes, when a teacher says core work, typically students hit the floor. Think about it. How do you spend your time in a Pilates mat class (remember Joseph

what you do on your mat (or any practice) should somehow be relevant to your everyday life. I dont spend all day in bed and I hope you dont, and even if you do, sit-ups wont help. Our core should be something we use in everything that we do, so it would only make sense that we are taught to use our core for real life skills. Moves on our mat should be taught in a fashion of knowledge is power; I am constantly educating my students on muscles, what they feel like, where they are and why they are important. When Im 80, I would prefer to not wear Depend undergarments, to be able to run, laugh, cough and sneeze without peeing my pants, and heck, I want to enjoy sex until Im 100. At my ripe age of 28, I would like to keep my figure, have good spinal health and continue to utilize my core in all that I do. And if you would agree, then ditch your sit-ups because they will not give you that.

The souls wake-up call .............................................................

By kathy clegg, ma, cDc
t starts as a small but deeply planted seed someplace within, that calls to us, like a dripping faucet, louder and louder until we can no longer ignore it to escape insanity. You knew it was there, but thought you could stuff it down, disconnect and keep walking through the motions of an artificial life that taps feelings of loneliness, isolation, misunderstanding and resentment. It may show up as fear; how others see you, what they think and judgments of your creative presentations in each moment. It may even appear unconsciously in your dreams; perhaps hanging on a cliff or nakedly exposed in a crowd. Truth is, your very soul is stirring within, like a babys coo that grows in decibels until a full-scale eruption of mixed pain and pleasure. Its quest is to be free, to be loved, to live an authentic life. It longs to feel at home in peaceful serenity by living its truth,

gameless, egoless, free of deception authentically adorned in the truth of who you really are.

what do we do about it?

The old system would label us with diagnoses and medical conditions like depression, mood swings, SAD, ADD or bipolar thinking. Wed be given prescription medicine to dull the senses, suppress the feelings and mask the pain. Is this a necessary approach? For some; yes. But for the majority of us, its our souls call to wake-up and unlock our uniqueness imprisoned in this world of clones and conditioning. Dr. Steve Ilardi of the University of Kansas documents six aspects of todays lifestyle that can cause or deter depression. In a 14-week program following 80 people with depression, 74% of the group that tried these therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) totally recovered or had a significant reduction of their symptoms, compared to 16% of the control group that were treated with antidepressionmedication and psychotherapy.

which hearing aid is right for me? ..................................................................

By Dr. Douglas kloss
t is a good idea for consumers to spend some quality time researching when it comes time to purchase hearing aids. They are expensive items that many people need; however, you dont have to spend money on hearing aid technology that you do not need or will not benefit from. There are six major hearing aid manufacturers in the world and several smaller and/or subsidiary companies. So how do you know which brand is best for you? The first step is to get an audiological evaluation to check your current hearing status. Your audiologist can guide you to proper treatment, which may include a referral to a physician for a medically related issue concerning your hearing loss. Such cases may involve excessive earwax, ear infections or risk factors for other middle/inner ear conditions. Once you have been medically cleared for hearing aid use, it would be wise to seek an opinion of an audiologist who works with several hearing aid manufacturers. Some hearing aid companies do a better job of amplifying certain hearing losses. If you have one of these types of hearing loss and you go to an audiologist who just works with one hearing aid company, your choice of hearing aid technology is limited. Most hearing aid companies have technology that can fit a wide range of hearing losses, but some have technology that has proven to be more effective and/or easier to use for some patients. For example, the hearing aid needs of someone who spends the majority of their day at home are much different than someone who works full-time in a noisy environment. Also, there are patient factors like dexterity and eyesight that can play a part in which model of hearing aid you choose. The good news is that the overwhelming majority of hearing aids dispensed today utilize digital technology. Digital hearing aids are very flexible and can be adjusted to your hearing loss as you get older. The fitting ranges for these hearing aids are wide enough so that sound quality expectations can be met. All six of the major hearing aid companies manufacture digital hearing aids. Once you have a current audiogram, I suggest you sit down with your audiologist and discuss your hearing loss. A proper evaluation would include a discussion of your current lifestyle, the problems you are currently experiencing with your hearing and your

physical ability to manipulate hearing aids, as well as a demonstration of the different hearing aid models and styles that are appropriate for you.

hots, surgery and medication shouldnt be the only path to a painfree existence. This is the principle on which licensed massage therapist Rob Reader founded Active Body Wellness LLC in 2007. Licensed massage therapist Wendy Halfpap joined Reader in the practice in 2011. This Mequon-based massage therapy practice specializes in relief of acute and chronic pain. With more than 1,500 hours of specialized training, both Halfpap and Reader offer very advanced and effective therapies to their clients. Healing both the body and the mind together works best, says Halfpap, who integrates relaxation techniques (breathing, aromatherapy and hot stones) with stretching and trigger point therapy to provide long-term, positive results for her clients. Halfpap, who graduated from the Lakeside School of Massage in 2007, also offers CranioSacral Therapy, a gentle approach that releases deep tensions to relieve pain and dysfunction, and improve whole-body health and performance. This therapy works quite well on individuals with a wide range of medical challenges, from migraines to fibromyalgia, according to Halfpap. Pain should not be something people live with, says Reader, the only certified Muscle Release Therapy practitioner in the state. Reader graduated from Lakeside School of Massage in 2005 and immediately distinguished himself as a therapist for individuals with high body performance needs, chronic pain, injuries and high stress. Combining in-depth training with an intuitive ability to trace pain to its source, he not only has become the massage therapist that other massage therapists seek out, but has also been the official massage therapist for the Milwaukee Ballet since 2006. There is no competition for client retention between therapists, which can occur in a massage therapy practice. We have the same goal in mind: pain relief. And we share our knowledge so our clients can achieve this, Reader explains. Pets and their people ..........................................................

By alexandria s. Binkowski, mh, nD, ms
have cared for and shared my life with animals (my kids) that have medical conditions for the past 35 years. The number one question I have been asked is, Why do you do it? People wonder about the financial responsibility, loss of freedom in my life, lack of sleep, many goodbyes Ive had to endure, etc. I always smile when I hear these words because peace and calm come over me. There is only one answer, It is my passion. I give them a chance at LIFE. It is one of the reasons I walk this planet. It gives purpose and meaning to my life. It is a soul connection for me, and I have an energetic bond with each one of them for eternity. When I look at them, it reminds me that not all angels have wings. In 2010, the Census Bureau estimated that there were 114,825,428 households in the United States. According to the 2011-2012 American Pet Products Association statistics, there are approximately 78.2 million owned dogs in this country. Thirtynine percent of households own at least one dog. Twenty-eight percent have two dogs. Twelve percent own three or more dogs, which averages to 1.69 percent. There are approximately 86.4 million owned cats. Thirty-three percent of households own at least one cat. Fifty-two percent have more than one cat, with an average of 2.2. Americans spent nearly $51 billion on their pets in 2011. Sixty-five percent of this number was spent on food and vet costs. Grooming, boarding, pet hotels, pet-sitting and day care surged to $3.8 billion in 2011.

why have a pet/human relationship?

Research has shown that pets exude healing energy for emotional and physical conditions. They renew our will to live, bringing back interest in life. They help children learn responsibility for another living entity. They make us smile and laugh. They give unconditional love and acceptance and will never give up on us no matter our flaws. They have taught me patience, compassion and humility. Pets help us stay physically active. They help lower blood pressure and stress. They help us cope with the loss of loved ones and with other major life changes. They help with better communication in marriages. Service animals help people with disabilities live normal lives. They help facilitate social interactions between strangers and improve social behavior for mentally impaired

people and prisoners. The list of benefits to us goes on and on. Pets are members of our families. So, what do they deserve/ need/want in return? Much like us: LOVE, security, respect, health, exercise, fun and happiness. Their emotional, energetic and physical well-being must be met for them to be at their holistic optimum. Their bodies contain the same systems and organs as the human body. They also have an energy field (aura) that needs to be kept flowing freely without blockages. Their chakras have very similar colors and vibrations as ours. Clean water, air, restful sleep, natural nutritious food (without byproducts and chemicals) and supplements are the best for preventative medicine. There are many natural modalities that keep your pet healthy. Domestic and wild animals go to plants naturally when they need medication or detoxing. Herbal medicine is the oldest of the healing arts. It is safe and cost effective. Homeopathy bridges the healing gap between the physical and non-physical bodies. With animals, the dosage is the same as ours, but the potency of the remedy is not. Acupuncture and acupressure are great techniques for orthopedic problems, nerve and skin issues, cancer, heart problems, diabetes, feline leukemia, cataracts, injuries, urinary tract infections and behavioral problems. Massage and therapeutic touch work wonders as pets love to be stroked. A special bond is created with this interaction. Flower essences work on a vibrational level in a subtle way to heal stress and emotional imbalances. Remember, our four-legged kids do have feelings of abandonment, rejection, anxiety, sadness, fear, grief, jealousy, etc. Kinesiology (muscle testing) is used for emotional blockages and determines which foods, essences, etc. are best for your pet. Energy medicine is highly effective. Do not treat pet ailments any differently than you would your own. Consult a well-trained experienced professional. I look forward to writing next months article where I will be addressing the death of our pets and how to deal with this loss in a healthy manner.

Calculating your calorie needs made simple .....................................................................

By Tony Bednarowski

hether youre just curious or have a serious need to evaluate your daily calorie needs due to weight concerns, you may want to consider your basal metabolic rate (BMR). This figures the amount of energy (calories) ones body uses when in a resting or non-active state. The BMR calculator is one of the most widely used measurements in determining ones basal metabolic rate or base. This excellent tool is often used by dieticians, personal trainers or individuals in conjunction with the body mass index (BMI) calculator. The BMI calculator is used to figure out where a persons healthy body weight range is. The BMR calculator is then used to help figure out how many calories a person should be consuming to get them to their healthy body weight. So here is where most people (and yes, even some of our trusted professionals) go wrong while using the BMR calculator. While using this standard measuring tool, you must first understand what you are measuring and why. Muscle is calorie active tissue, which means it is the physical place where calories are burned for energy. Fat is simply storage or extra energy. If you can grasp this concept, then you will also understand that when using the BMR calculator to help with weight loss, you must take into account your body fat percentage. Why? So you can accurately calculate the right amount of calories needed based on calorie active tissue (your true fat burning machine) not overall body weight.

2. Take your actual overall body weight and subtract your body fat

level to determine your lean body mass or calorie active tissue. For example, if you are 150 lbs. and you are at 22% body fat, figure 150 minus 33 (22% of 150), which equals 117. Your lean body mass is 117 pounds. 3. Search the Internet for a BMR calculator. Punch in the four calculating components it will ask you for: gender, height, age and weight (be sure to use your lean body mass NOT your existing overall body weight). There you have it. This will give you the amount of calories needed to maintain your current body weight in a non-active state. Any more calories than that results in weight gain, any fewer calories than that results in weight loss. Its just that simple.

become a more positive person ..................................

earned optimism can be beneficial, helping to minimize feelings of depression, reduce stress levels and possibly improve physicalhealth. According to a controlled study by the University of Pennsylvanias Martin Seligman, Ph.D., and Gregory Buchanan, Ph.D., incoming university freshmen who participated in a workshop on cognitive coping skills reported fewer adverse physical problems over time and retained their physical and mental health better than those who were not in a coping skills group. This isnt the first evidence that optimism can have profound benefits. In a retrospective study of 34 healthy Hall of Fame baseball players who were on teams between 1900 and 1950, the known optimists lived longer. Survival rates for optimistic cancer patients are higher than for those who are hopeless. Optimists are also better equipped to handle stress and manage incidents that would incite anxiety. Although there are plenty of people who seem to be eternally optimistic, optimism is not an inherited trait. Changing perceptions and teaching oneself to be more optimistic is possible. Being an optimist doesnt mean turning a blind eye to problems or expecting everything to be easy. Being optimistic means learning from situations and recognizing that obstacles are there for a purpose.

time to mull over something good that has happened and take credit for your involvement. Mentally categorize this feeling for later when you need an example of the way optimism makes you feel. Surround yourself with optimists. Hang out with people who have a sunny view on life rather than those who bring you down or commiserate. Learning from example can help you develop more positive thinking patterns. Believe you can and will succeed. When approaching something new, dont set yourself up for failure. Go into it with the vision that you will thrive. Even if you dont succeed as planned, you can use the opportunity as a learning experience and set a new plan to tackle. Erase negative phrases from your vocabulary. Using the terms I cant or Its impossible is a recipe for failure. Avoid complaints. Complaining does little more than make the person complaining feel even worse and could bring down the people around you. Because it wont solve anything, there really is nothing productive about it. If you must get your feelings out, write them in a book and then tuck

cant be positive if you arent feeling 100 percent. A well-balanced diet, routine exercise, sufficient rest, and finding time to go outdoors and get some fresh air and sunshine can help keep a person on a positive path. Get involved. Spending too much time isolated and alone can eventually degrade anyones feelings of well-being. Take the time to meet with people outside of your family and engage in different activities that take your mind off of stressors. People who are busy in a good way are more inclined to see the brighter side of life. Practice positive affirmations. Tell yourself good things. Receiving praise is something that instantly can put a person in a good mood. Instead of waiting for praise from others, give yourself a pat on the back every day. Realize that things dont happen overnight. Becoming more optimistic will take time, but it can be done. Dont be discouraged if it takes a little more time than you expected. Living longer and more productively comes partially from being an optimistic person and making the best of every situation.
