AdaptiveFunction
TCAEY-THAEY 115233 with STANDARD control TXAEY 117133 with control The AdaptiveFunction control logic makes it possible to adapt the chiller/heat pump oper ating parameters to the wor king conditions of the system in which it is installed, wor king parti ally as a water buffer tank simulator. This makes it possibl e to reduces the litres/kW of the s ystem itself, guaranteeing compr essor safety and the reliability of the machi ne over time. Approximatel y 4 litr es/kW are required in a s ystem fitted with a chiller with AdaptiveFunction adapti ve c ontrol and at least 10 litres/kW in a s ystem fitted with a c hiller without adapti ve c ontrol. However, it is evident that in process applications where more accurate water temperature c ontrol is required, it is always preferable to use a water buffer tank or a greater sys tem water content, which guar antees high sys tem thermal inerti a.

TCAEY-THAEY-TXAEY 115233 AdaptiveFunction Plus

TCAEY-THAEY 115233 with control The new AdaptiveFunction Plu s adapti ve regul ation has been excl usivel y patented by RHOSS S.p.A. It is the result of a long partnership with the University of Padua. The various algorithm devel opment operations were i mplemented and validated on units in the Compact-Y range in the RHOSS S.p.A. R esearc h&Dev elopment Laboratory using numerous tes t campaigns.

general characteristics

Main functions
To guarantee optimal unit operation in the s ys tem in which it is installed. Evolved adaptive logic. To obtain the best performance from a c hiller in terms of energy efficienc y at full and partial c apacities. Low consumption chiller.

Objectives

Efficiency or Precision
Thanks to the evolved c ontrol, it is possibl e to run the chiller on two different regulation s etti ngs to obtain the bes t possible performance in terms of energ y efficienc y and considerable seas onal savings, or high water delivery temperature precision:

Operating logic
In general, the actual control logics on water chillers/heat pumps do not consider the characteristics of the s ys tem in which the units are installed; they usuall y regul ate the return water temperature and are positioned so as to ensure the operation of the chillers, givi ng less priority to the s ys tem requirements. The new AdaptiveFunction Plu s adapti ve logic counters these logics with the objecti ve of optimising the c hiller operation on the basis of the system char acteristics and the effecti ve thermal load. T he c ontr oller regulates the deli ver y water temperature and adjusts itself, as and when required, to the relative oper ating conditions usi ng: the i nfor mation c ontained in the return and deli ver y water temperature to estimate the wor king conditions thanks to a c ertain mathematical for mula; a special adapti ve algorithm that us es this esti mate to vary the val ues and the start-up and s witch- off limit values of the c ompressors; the opti mised compress or start-up management guar antees a pr ecision water suppl y to the user, reduci ng the fluctuati on around the set- point val ue.

1. Low consumption chiller: Economy option

It is well known that chillers wor k at full c apacity for j ust a ver y s mall percentage of their operating time, while they wor k at partial capacity for most of the s eas on. Therefore, the power they need to s upply generally differs from the nominal design power, and oper ation at partial capacity has a notic eable effec t on seasonal energy perfor manc e and consumpti on. This makes it nec essar y to run the unit s o that it is as efficient as possible at partial c apacity. T he c ontr oller therefore ensures that the water delivery temperature is as high as possible ( when operating as a chiller) or as l ow as possibl e (when operating as a heat pump) whilst c ompati ble with the thermal loads, meani ng that it is on a sliding scale, unlike in traditi onal s ystems. T his prevents energy wastage linked to the mai ntenance of pointlessl y onerous temperature l evels for the chiller, ens uring that the rati o between the power to be supplied and the energy to be us ed to produce it is always at an optimum level. Fi nall y the right level of comfort is availabl e to everyone!

Summer season: a unit that oper ates with a sliding set-point enables s easonal energy savi ngs of around 8% c ompared to a traditi onal unit that operates with a fi xed s et-point.

W inter season: a unit that operates with a sliding set-point enables s easonal energy savi ngs of around 13% compared to a traditional unit that operates with a fi xed s etpoint. Calculations carried out demonstrate that seasonal c ons umption is equi val ent to that of a CLASS A mac hine.

Annual: efficienc y over the annual operation of the unit i n heat pump mode. AdaptiveFunction Plu s, with the Econom y functi on, enables the c hiller assembl y to operate energy-saving programmes whilst still providing the required level of s ervic e.

2. High precision: Precision option

In this operating mode, the unit wor ks at a fi xed set-point and, thanks to the delivery water temper ature control and the evolved r egulation logic, at a capacity of between 50% and 100% it is possible to guar antee an aver age fluctuati on from the water suppl y temperature of approximatel y 1.5 C from the set-point value compared to an average fluctuation over ti me of approximatel y 3C, which is normall y obtained with s tandar d return control. The Pr ecision option thus guarantees precision and reliability for all thos e applicati ons that require a regulator that guar antees a more accur ate constant water s upply temperature, and wher e there are particular damp c ontr ol requirements . However, in process applications it is always advisable to us e a water buffer tank or a greater s ystem water content to guarantee higher s ystem ther mal inertia.

The chart illustrates the fluctuations of the water temperature from the set value for the various capacities, demonstrating how a unit w ith delivery control and the AdaptiveFunc tion Plus Precision function guarantees greater water supply temperature precision.

Virtual Tank: guaranteed reliability, even with water in the pipes only
A low water content in the s ystem c an caus e the c hiller units /heat pumps to be unreliable and c an generate s ystem instability and l ac k of perfor mance. Thanks to the Virtual Tank function, this is no longer a problem. T he unit can operate in s ystems with just 2 litr es/kW in the pipes given that the control is able to c ompensate for the l ac k of inerti a specific to a water buffer tank, " muffling" the control signal, preventing the compressor from s witchi ng on and off in an unti mel y fashi on and reducing the average fl uctuation of the s et-poi nt value.

The chart shows the various chiller outlet temperatures considering capacity of 80%. We can observe how the temperatures of the unit with AdaptiveFunction Plus l ogic and the Virtual Tank function is far less varied and more stable over time, w ith average temperatures closer to the w orking set-point compared to a unit without the Virtual Tank function. Moreover, w e can see how the unit w ith AdaptiveFunction Plus logic and the Virtual Tank function sw itches the compressor on less often over the same period of time, w ith obvious advantages in terms of energy consumption and system reliability.

ACM Autotuning compressor management

AdaptiveFunction Plu s enables the C ompact-Y units to adapt to the s ystem they are ser ving, s o as to always identify the best c ompressor operating parameters in the different worki ng conditions . During the initi al operating phases, the special Autotuning functi on enables the Compact-Y unit with Ad aptiveFunction Plus to esti mate the thermal inertia characteristics that regulate the s ys tem dynamics. T he func tion, which is automaticall y acti vated when the unit is s witc hed on for the first ti me, executes a number of s et oper ating c ycles, during which it proc esses the information r elati ve to the water temperatures. It is thus possible to esti mate the physical c harac teristics of the s ystem and to identify the opti mal val ue of the par ameters to be used for the control. At the end of this initi al auto-es timate phase, the Autotuning func tion r emains acti ve, making it possible to adapt the control parameters quickl y to ever y change in the water circuit and thus in the s ystem water contents.

Energy efficiency at partial loads - ESEER index
The E.E.R. i ndex repres ents an es timate of the energy efficienc y of the c ooling unit in nominal design conditions. In reality, the operating time of a chiller in nominal conditions is us uall y less than the operati ng time i n partial load c onditi ons. The E.S.E.E.R. (European Seas onal E.E.R.) is an index that estimates the average seasonal energy efficienc y of the cooling unit i n four load and water temperature c onditi ons. Generall y, two water chillers with the same E.E.R. may have different E.S.E.E.R. values. In fact, for a water c ooling unit, the average energy efficienc y depends on design choices and on the temper ature of i nlet water at the c ondensing heat exc hanger. The E.S.E.E.R. energy index, introduc ed by the European Community (Project E.E.C.C.A.C. - Energ y Efficienc y and Certificati on of Central Air Conditioners), is characterised by the water temperatures (see table B) and by the energy weights that are assigned to the four load c onditions consi dered in the calcul ation: 100% , 75%, 50% and 25%.

TXAEY 117133 TXAEY operating principle

The ec ological polyvalent s ystem was designed by RHOSS to provide 2-pipe and 4pipe s ys tems with hot water from another heat exc hanger (recover y) year-round, as well as acting as a traditional reversibl e-cycle water chiller. The total heat rec over y units also allow efficient energy r ationalisation. The s ystem can operate in two modes, which can be sel ected by elec tronic c ontrol. These are c alled AUTOMATIC and SELECT . In AUTOMATIC mode, the s ystem allows for full recover y of the heat of c ondensation and/or the production of chilled water. In SELECT mode, it allows for the production of hot water by the sec ondar y or main heat exc hanger.

operating principle
AUTOMATIC mode - multi-season
In this mode the s ystem automatically manages the r equests for hot or chilled water, suppl ying chilled water to the main exchanger and hot water to the sec ondar y exchanger, even simultaneously. Each r equest for hot or cold water is satisfied independently of ever y other request. When the s econdary exchanger requires hot water, the flow of gas delivered from the compressor is direc ted towards the rec over y. If chilled water is required at the same time, the unit oper ates as a water chiller. In AUTOMATIC mode the unit therefor e has three possi ble automatic operating configurations: AUTOMATIC 1 (A1) - operation as an aircooled water chiller for the producti on of c hilled water. AUTOMATIC 2 (A2) - operati on as a water chiller with total heat recovery for si multaneous produc tion of hot and c hilled water. AUTOMATIC 3 (A3) - operation as a heat pump for the production of hot water at the secondar y exchanger (recover y).

SELECT mode - multi-season

In this mode, based on requests the s ys tem provides hot water to the main exchanger SELECT 1 (S1) or hot water to the s econdary exc hanger SELECT 2 (S2). If simultaneous requests are expected, priority of operati on must be established vi a the electronic control. If the reques t for hot water from the s elected heat exc hanger is completel y satisfied, the hot gas can be c ompletel y s witched over to the other heat exchanger, provided this is requested. The unit is programmed in the factor y to provide hot water with priority assigned to the secondar y exchanger. You c an however modify this setting from the el ectronic c ontrol panel. To summarise, oper ation in SELECT mode offers two possible automatic c onfigurations: SELECT 1 (S1) - operation as a heat pump for the produc tion of hot water at the main exc hanger. SELECT 2 (S2) - operation as a heat pump for the produc tion of hot water at the main exc hanger.

The competitive advantages of the polyvalent system

The pol yvalent s ystem was patented by RHOSS S.p.A. to provide for the reques t for hot and col d water, simultaneousl y or independentl y, with a si ngle unit. This opti mizes energy consumpti on and makes management easier. The pol yvalent s ystem is a valid alternati ve to traditional s ystems that require the use of a chiller or heat pump, with use or addition of a boiler. The advantages derive from the use of a single unit, energy s avings due to high COPs, and the lac k of use of c ombus tible products, s o that it can be defined as an ecological pol yvalent mac hine. The s ystem is a versatile fourth-generation pol yvalent heat pump. As opposed to other pol yvalent units, it meets the typical demands of 2-pipe and 4- pipe s ys tems with a single unit and in a most fl exible manner, so that it c an even be us ed in existing s ystems with no modifications required. This pol yval ent unit takes it place on the mar ket as a unit that ensures essential aspects such as EFFICIENCY, RELIABILITY AND VERSATILITY.

23

TXAEY 117133 Applications of the polyvalent system

The pol yvalent ecological s ystem was designed by RHOSS S.p.A. to provide year-round suppl y of hot and cold water to 2-pipe or 4-pipe systems , either simultaneousl y or independentl y, depending on the s elected operating mode, AUTOMATIC or SELECT .

applications

2-pipe-systems
Air conditi oning and the produc tion of hot water in a 2-pi pe s ys tem is a typical application in hotels, hos pitals, g yms and hos pitality structures i n general. When in AUTOMATIC mode, it is used in the s ummer months for cooling and the produc tion of hot water. 4-pipe systems
Increasingl y frequentl y, modern HVAC installations require the si multaneous produc tion of hot and c hilled water. T his can occur more often bec ause of: the development of new types of thermal insulation for buildi ngs; increase of i nternal loads (CED, WEB,); lighting systems; the presence of l arge windows; the growing importance attributed to air quality, which requires the us e of conditioning systems year-round. In these kinds of application, it c an be us ed in AUTOMATIC mode thr oughout the year, catering to simultaneous or s eparate hot and chilled water demands in a completel y automatic way.

TCAEY-THAEY 115233 Performance

Choice of a chiller or heat pump and use of the performance tables
For eac h model, table D provi des the cooling capacity (QF), and the total abs orbed electric power (P), on the basis of the evaporator outlet water temperature with constant temperatur e differences T = 5C: the val ue of QT is the val ue of the heating capacity availabl e to the us er in winter mode. Within operating limits, the val ues i n table D may permit interpolations of performanc e but extrapolati ons are not per mitted. Table H shows the values of correcti ve coefficients to be applied to the nominal values if water with gl ycol is used. Graph 1 shows the pr essure drop values of the heat exc hangers (with respect to the indicated temper ature differenc es). Graph 2 indicates the useful static pressure of the pump (if pres ent).

performances

Example:
Design conditi ons for a water-cooled chiller with i nstallation P1: Requested cooling capacity = 29.2 kW; Temperature of water produc ed at evaporator = 13C; Temperature differential T at the evaporator = 5C; Inlet air temperatur e at condenser = 30C. Using the val ues i ndicated in table D, and supposing a temperatur e differential of T=5C at the c ondens er, it c an be seen that model 109 meets the requirement with: QF=29.2 kW; P=7.9 kW; The water flow rates G to be sent to the exc hangers are obtained using the followi ng formul ae: G (l/h) evaporator = (QFx860)T=(29.2x860)5=5022.4 (l/h); Graph 1 shows the press ure dr op values pw of the evaporator. pw evaporator = 60 kPa; Graph 2 shows the residual static press ure val ues pr available on the machine outlet 85 kPa.

Connection to the system
The unit is equipped with thr eaded male water connections and a manual air bleed val ve positioned inside the s hell. It is advisable to install intercept valves the is olate the unit fr om the rest of the s ystem. It is also advisable to ins tall elas tic connec tion joins. It is ess ential to fit a metal mes h filter (squar e mesh of no greater than 0.8 mm) on the unit return piping. The water flow through the heat-exchanger should not fall below a val ue c orrespondi ng to a temperature differential of 8C. During long periods of i nacti vity, it is advisabl e to drai n the water from the s ystem. It is possible to avoid draini ng the water by addi ng ethyl ene glycol to the water circuit (see Use of antifreeze s oluti ons).

The us e of ethylene gl ycol is rec ommended if you do not wish to drai n the water from the hydraulic s ystem during the wi nter stoppage, or if the unit has to suppl y c hilled water at temperatures l ower than 5C The additi on of glycol changes the physic al properties of the water and c ons equentl y the perfor mance of the unit. T he proper percentage of glyc ol to be added to the s ystem c an be obtained from the most demandi ng operating conditi ons fr om thos e shown below. Table "H" shows the multipli ers which allow the c hanges in perfor mance of the units to be determined in proportion to the required percentage of ethylene glycol. The multipliers refer to the following conditi ons: c ondenser inl et water temperature 30C; c hilled water outlet temperature 7C; temperature differ ential at evaporator and condens er 5C. For different operating conditi ons, the same coefficients c an be used as their variations ar e negligible.
